Chevrolet Volt Change Vehicle

Ever since it appeared on the electric car scene in 2011, the Chevy Volt brought a measure of practicality and peace of mind with its supplemental gas engine that would kick in to extend the Volt's limited battery-only range. Now, redesigned for 2016, the Volt returns as a more mature and capable car.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2017 Chevrolet Volt owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Apple CarPlay

"Poor connectivity, podcasts not showing in the car interface,"

Anonymous, MO (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"When phone is working as apple carplay, when I push the button on the steering wheel to talk to siri, it pauses the music and the music doesn't always come back on when siri disconnects. Even when just using fm radio for music."

Anonymous, MA (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Recurring, apparently widespread problem. Local dealers lack training and knowledge to fix, provide useless or nonsensical advice. Appears to be a mix of hardware (USB) and software problems."

Dale G., VA (2017 Chevrolet Volt 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"many glitches in apple carplay as well as other connectivity but sort of expected as it is new technology. would just like it and the radio to work better in a new car. Have an old pickup whose radio works better in fm reception"

Anonymous, NY (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
Display screen freezes up

"Display screen went blank, although if you touched the right areas, you could still control it (but you have to go by memory). Took the car in, and they updated some software and that fixed it. I suspect just unplugging the car and plugging it back in would have fixed it, but hopefully the upgrade will make it never happen again"

Trainor S., FL (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
Display screen goes blank

"Main (navigation) center display occasionally will freeze up and/or go blank and then re-boot"

Joel B., CA (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"The display screen went black, and all electronic capabilities stopped in the car - no phone connection, no music connectivity to phone or stereo operation, and no USB operation. The dealership determined that the entire dashboard screen and subsequent electronics needed to be replaced."

Anonymous, IA (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Entertainment system reboots every several minutes, loses Bluetooth connections, will stop displaying backup camera until rebooted."

Anonymous, AZ (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"USB ports were dead on delivery of brand-new car. This required two visits to the dealer to correct -- once to diagnose the problem and a second visit to fix it, since the dealer lacked the necessary parts"

Anonymous, RI (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Sound goes off and on while listening to audio book on my smart phone. If I turn off Bluetooth and listen via the speaker on my phone, the sound interruptions don't happen"

Henry F., MD (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Does not always recognize iPod"

Anonymous, NY (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"CHEVROLET dealer has no solution to this problem."

Anonymous, MA (2017 Chevrolet Volt 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
Hardware replacement

"Screen went blank, never came back. Cost $1500 and 5 days in the dealership to right the problem. Works now"

Anonymous, (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"One of the main computers failed and had to be replaced"

Anonymous, FL (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"The pairing is inconsistent and is similar to the problem i had on the 2013 volt. The device will consistently try to improve"

Louis D., MI (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
Radio

"wouldn't play -- computer issue"

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Volt 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Radio worked inconsistently and had poor reception from start (late Sept). After several months, radio reception turned to nonexistent or inconsistent and poor. Took car in, and they ended up keeping it for almost 2 weeks waiting to get a new radio module. Finally they found out none available. Just last week, after around a month, was informed that module was available and received by dealer"

Anonymous, MA (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"While using AM radio, activating air conditioning causes static."

Anonymous, HI (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Reception was poor. Chevrolet replaced the antenna. It's better."

James M., FL (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Sirius/XM radio is pure crap."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"The radio will intermittently stop playing. Sometimes the station tuning will deteriorate."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Poor reception. The shark-fin antenna on the roof was replaced. Works fine now."

James M., FL (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Radio has always been very poor reception in FM local stations and very staticy in everything. software and algorithms seemsto be slapped tofgether with cheapest possible alternatives so they are very unstable and un reliable and inconsitent and not adjustable enough"

Anonymous, NY (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
Software update fixes

"Hybrid drive software updated due to recall. Found out later it had 3 more updates I was not told about. Poor communication with company."

Anonymous, OK (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Several recalls that require being brought into the dealership for updates. Time consuming."

Anonymous, MI (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
Steering wheel controls

"Intermittent problems with cruise control"

Anonymous, FL (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"2 modules replaced to resolve problems with the voice command system - not recognizing voice commands to operate the phone and navigation commands"

Joel B., CA (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Engine computer

"Updated software to fix rough idle issue, warranty fix, it also temporarily fixed sparadic cruise control not turning on"

Anonymous, WA (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Rough running until reprogrammed. Applied to all gen.2 Volts"

Anonymous, MI (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Total and sudden loss of power at freeway speed. The Chevy engineer in Detroit told me that it could not have been the fuel pump even though the car worked after the field technician replaced the pump. He thought it was a failure of a power bus"

John A., CA (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"The HVAC system would sometime put out heat instead of the AC called for and the car had to be restarted to correct"

Anonymous, MA (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"WHEN I drove 75 to 80 miles per hour the generator heated up to 205 degrees. The computer shut the entire system down. error codes said transmission to hot and fuel pump to generator could not keep up. Had to clear all codes before the car would boot up. Software updates fixed the problem."

Zane G., UT (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"When the engine computer messes up and causes problems including failure to start or even turn on the car, the dealership often cannot pinpoint the problem unless the code is displaying when the vehicle is brought in. So, if car won't start and it is towed in and then restarted a day later with the error resolving on it's own, the dealership service team can't offer any help as to what was wrong. They just send it back saying, it works fine now. I don't trust this car or CHEVROLET. I feel like they are either covering up known errors or they are clueless as to the issues. Either way is not acceptable. I'm trading in this Volt for an Audi the day I get the Volt back from the shop this time."

Kelly Z., IN (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
Oil leaks

"The engine oil pan leaked when I first got the vehicle (200 miles) and is in the shop now for the same problem"

Douglas B., CA (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"At 2,700 miles, engine oil pan started leaking. Instead of a rubber gasket, the oil pan has a bead of sealant. The sealant failed and was replaced under warranty. This repair involved two days of work. The oil leak issue is a common issue reported by other 2016-2017 Volt owners on online forums"

Anonymous, AZ (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Minor oil leak after one month of ownership. Dealership fixed the problem at no cost to me"

Paul M., MI (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"The car shipped with a leaky oil pan. After the third visit to the dealer, they replaced the oil pan and the car has had no problems since"

Christina O., CA (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"After 3 months, I noticed some small oil drips on my driveway. The car has a small oil pan that was leaking, but this oil pan is not held together by bolts and a gasket. Instead, the pan is held together by a sealing adhesive, which takes 24 hours to dry properly. This results in what is normally a 30 minute gasket replacement to take over a day and requires the use of a loaner vehicle"

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Minor oil leak corrected under warranted service"

Christopher A., TX (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

Drive System

Driveshaft or axle, CV joint, differential, transfer case, 4WD/AWD components, driveline vibration, traction control, electronic stability control (ESC), electrical failure.

What Owners Say

Driveshaft or axle

"Recalled and replaced. Machanic put the Axel together wrong and had to re-do installation."

Zane G., UT (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
Electrical failure

"12 v battery failed to charge Service heater"

Anonymous, MA (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Car stopped operating In gasoline mode And automatically switched to electric on a Long trip. Since there were only a few electric miles left on the charge, Onstar had to call a wrecker and take it in to Chevrolet dealer to be fixed."

Anonymous, NC (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Over several days in late March/early April 2020, my Volt somewhat "lost its mind"... the MIL light came on, the battery charging process started "dropping" charging sessions and the dash displaying "Unable to Charge", Battery level displays on the car became erratic and un-reliable, the car (when driving) would switch unexpectedly to engine power rather than staying on battery power as expected, and once I encountered a "Shift to Park" issue where the car could neither be driven nor turned off (finally resolved after 15 minutes of fiddling w/ various efforts to resolve it... (during which I began to fear it would need to be towed!). I checked the OBD2 codes and consulted an internet forum, and the symptoms and codes suggested a failed "BECM" (Battery Energy Control Module). I appreciated that the Chevrolet dealer service department was open during our state's Coronavirus shutdown (as an essential service) and that they had 2 Volt-trained technicians. They concurred it needed a new BECM module. I took it in on a Friday, and it was available for pickup the next Tuesday, and all repairs were made under its extended "Voltech" drive train warranty at no charge. I am pleased that it has "regained its mind" and performed normally since the repair!"

Anonymous, WA (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Chevrolet took care of the problem, no charge"

M L., FL (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Power inverter module failed at 568 miles. Car out of service for 13 days. Shortly after the car would not start due to discharged batteries. Dealer troubleshoot could not find problem. Later engine check light illuminated. Dealer did a factory recall for emissions issue. Three times the car would not respond to the key fob, once preventing us from getting into the car, twice from being able to start the car. Issue cleared itself after a few minutes. We don't trust this car. Also, no spare tire, jack or lug wrench is a terrible idea. Cost us a night in a motel and $1,000 to deal with a flat on a freeway at night."

Bruce E., WA (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"After having depleted the available electric power, I was driving on gas for several miles, then it quit, giving a reduced propulsion warning, as it quit."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Charge controller failed. Replaced under warranty"

Anonymous, AZ (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Dead battery. Had to be replaced."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Engine Control Module needed to be replaced. It seems to be a common issue since the dealer had the spare part in stock."

Edward S., CA (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"The BECM--Battery Energy Control Module--failed. Car will not operate. Apparently this happens to a small percentage of Volts. Replacement of the BECM covered under warranty."

Anonymous, WA (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
Transfer case

"Some switch in transmission failed. The had to be towed."

M L., FL (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

Anonymous, MN (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Small rattle from the driver's side air vent area."

Anonymous, AZ (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"The OnStar module in the ceiling of the vehicle had an annoying rattle. CHEVROLET replaced the module free of charge and the issue was resolved."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Brake pedal squeaked when depressed. Not loud. Only heard when radio off. Was a known problem by CHEVROLET. They replaced a part under warranty and the noise stopped."

Steven D., HI (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Rattles in door and dash since new."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Click when turning right- slow speeds"

Anonymous, MA (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
Wind noise

"Driving over 20 MPH with any window all the way down results in a high amplitude, low frequency oscillation that I fear is strong enough to rupture an eardrum. Rolling the window up 1/2 to 3/4 of the way alleviates the issue, but this is something that should have been taken into account during the design"

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Due to the design of the car, opening a window at even low speed creates a low frequency oscillation that buffets your ears in a very painful manner. I cannot open the window while driving."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Coolers and lines

"Cooler line stopped working correctly leading to overheating of transmission fluid and loss of level. Fixed under warranty and working well since."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
Gear selector or linkage

"When gear selector was put into Park, the indicator said it was not in Park. Couldn't turn the engine off until we could get the indicator to show it was in park. New gear selector housing was put in and it fixed the problem. No charge."

Anonymous, (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"The car showed "Shift to Park" message when it was already in Park, and would not shut down. Shifting to Drive, then back to Park resolved the problem. A few weeks later the problem recurred, then became more frequent, then sometimes it required more repetitions shifting in/out of Park to resolve. Floor shifter assembly had to be replaced."

Anonymous, NC (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Transmission is electronically controlled. A switch in the fake gear shift lever failed and would not allow the car to be turned off. It was repaired under the transmission extended warranty, which is why I characterized it as a transmission problem."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Gear selector failed to indicate vehicle was in Park causing an error to display when trying to turn the car off."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"The gear selector would sometimes not read that I put the car in 'Park' when I parked the car. I would have to restart the car and then move the gear selector out of and back into 'Park' until it car sensor read that the car was in park. In some cases I had to do this several times. I had the gear selector replaced under warranty."

James S., AZ (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
Transmission computer

"WHEN I PUT MY CAR IN DRIVE, IT WOULD NOT MOVE."

Anthony T., MI (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
Transmission leaks

"A gasket on the transmission was leaking and ended up with low fluid that caused rough and incomplete shifting. Fixed under warranty and fine since then."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"I don't know whether the problem is with the c I don't know whether the problem is with the A/C compressor or from another source, but I don't have any air conditioning in the car this summer."

Jay T., MA (2017 Chevrolet Volt 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
Automatic climate control

"Defroster senses humidity, was dehumidifying without reheat, caused the windshield to fog on the outside to extent that visibility was limited, particularly at night. Seems tro be better but have not had the high humidity problem this spring yet."

Fil F., NY (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Climate control lowers the fan speed if you receive or make a phone call. It will keep the fan speed even if the call is an hour long. Only way to fix is manually control the speed. Also, automatic control has higher maximum fan speed than manual control."

Amitabh G., MI (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
Heater system

"It was a position indicator for a valve. The system continued to work properly but the position signal didn’t."

Richard C., NH (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Electric heat failed. Replaced electrical heater control module which includes the coolant heater."

Anonymous, IL (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"I'm about to take my Volt in for service to check out this problem. I don't get sufficient heat in the cold months, nor do I have any air conditioning at all this summer."

Jay T., MA (2017 Chevrolet Volt 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
Refrigerant leaks

"the leak happened @ 40k miles and wasn't covered and to repare it was $1200 so I just operated the car without a/c"

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

Power Equipment

Cruise control, clock, warning lights, body control module, keyless entry, wiper motor or washer, tire pressure monitor, interior or exterior lights, horn, gauges, 12V power plug, remote engine start, alarm or security system

What Owners Say

Hybrid/electric battery replacement

"Left car at airport wouldn’t start. I also had a problem with the battery that had to be taken to the dealer numerous times, in total about a week, because they said it was fixed. But as I drove away, the service engine light can on"

Mark W., FL (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"The battery has had to be replaced twice so far since I've owned the car. The car is currently in the shop and has yet to be diagnosed, but the car stopped while I was traveling 70 mph on the interstate - error messages said Engine not available - Service Soon and propulsion power is reduced. **Very unreliable car.** I have been stranded alone on the road 5 times. Only one certified Volt mechanic within 100 miles of me. Do not recommend the Volt!"

Kelly Z., IN (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
Hybrid/electric system and battery (excluding replacement)

Anonymous, (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"A warning came up stating a problem with the hybrid battery. Was in shop for a day for repairs. Under warranty."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Battery range went down drastically in the first 10 months. Dealer told us we should drive more carefully. They did not listen to us and did not do anything about the problem - very unimpressive."

Anonymous, MA (2017 Chevrolet Volt 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
Ignition switch

"The car would not recognize the key fob unless it was placed in the center console area to make direct contact with its sensor"

Anonymous, MA (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

Cruise control

"Adaptive cruise control cuts out randomly when driving down the highway. Dashboard alert just says it is "temporarily unavailable". After a while it will work again. On an 8 hour drive it cut out 5 or 6 times"

Donald H., MB (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Adaptive cruise control would not engage. Dealer installed a fix for the brake pedal that allowed the cruise control to engage. This was obviously covered under warranty."

Anonymous, OR (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
Exterior lights (other than headlights)

"Turn signal control stopped working properly within two months of purchase. Replaced under warranty"

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
Tire pressure monitor

"I bought winter tires (on new rims) from Canadian Tire and bought tire pressure monitors for them. When they put the summer tires back on (the deal when I bought the tires was that they would do this free for the life of the tires) the pressure monitor did not work. Canadian Tire tells me that they will charge $50 to reprogram it. They can't tell me if this is something that will need to be done every time I switch tires"

Donald H., MB (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
Warning lights

"As I said, not only the air bag warning went off, but the tire pressure and another engine issue. The dealer said it was some other electric issue. We had to take it in twice after having it less than a month"

Other/unsure

"It will randomly activate for no reason. It doesn’t work when needed."

Thomas S., CA (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Three times (so far) I have received a message stating that the PARKING BRAKE needed service. This ALSO caused the Adaptive Cruse Control to stop functioning. This ALSO caused the Hill Hold feature to not work. Each time, after a period of several days, the Parking Brake message and display icon went away. Once the message went away all three systems started working again (Parking Brake, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Hill Hold). Each time the problem resolved itself before I could take the vehicle in to be serviced."

Jim T., MA (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

What Owners Say

Emission control devices (includes EGR)

"Check engine light came on. Dealer installed software update -- did not fix problem. More diagnosis followed. Dealer ordered solenoid valve part. Took 2 days to install it due to complexity of connections (dealer provided free loaner). Problem has not recurred"

Anonymous, IL (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Check engine light kept coming on. Dealer replaced a EGR temp sensor, but it did not solve the problem. It was found to be a loose fuse was causing the problem."

Reid S., MN (2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Due to a build error an emissions pipe needed to be replaced, which required significant disassembly (including battery removal)."

Anonymous, IL (2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

Engine rebuild or replacement

"I was driving the car on the freeway, when the check engine light came on and stayed on. The next day I took the car to the dealer. It had an internal coolant leak, and they had to tear down the engine to find it. It was in the dealer's shop for 6 weeks (free loaner car provided.) Eventually the diagnosis was a warped head, and the whole engine was replaced. A few weeks later I had an incident in which the plastic coolant reservoir tank split, dumping coolant and causing the engine to overheat."
