Ever since it appeared on the electric car scene in 2011, the Chevy Volt brought a measure of practicality and peace of mind with its supplemental gas engine that would kick in to extend the Volt's limited battery-only range. Now, redesigned for 2016, the Volt returns as a more mature and capable car.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Owner Satisfaction with:

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"Smooth, effortless, silent power. Taut handling."

Anonymous, CA (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"Great acceleration"

Catherine C., MD (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"Extremely peppy and quiet."

Anonymous, ON (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"More nimble than expected. Instant good acceleration- no downshift, no turbo lag."

J H., CA (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"The vehicle has exceeded our expectations"

Richard B., ON (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"Love the smoothness of the electric motor. Would never go back to a gas engine. Very quiet and a pleasure to drive."

Anonymous, NY (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"great acceleration and handling. hugs the road and has a smooth ride."

Arthur W., CA (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"In electric drive mode this car is very responsive, and even more so in SPORT mode. Handling is excellent."

Anonymous, OH (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"The car has so much torque, that it can snap your head back at any speed. The second generation Volt is also very nimble. The brakes are far better than the original Volt, as are the Headlights, which are better than my BMW 2 Series with optional adaptive lights. The Volt is a BLAST TO DRIVE. THE freaking PRIUS ISN'T! How about you tell the truth in the future? It's as if Toyota owns CR. Shame on you! Oh, and I find it as satisfying to drive as my BMW M235i despite your ridiculous ratings."

Robert R., CA (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"A fast quiet magic carpet ride."

Anonymous, VA (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"Quiet rapid acceleration. Over 250 mpg lifetime. Although there is an electricity costs, not free."

Frederick K., NY (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"The throttle response is instantaneous. Gas motors cannot compete. We use the finger control to enable regenerative braking all the time. Driving in DC traffic sucks. The Volt is a great car to drive in traffic. Using the low mode in the transmission selector makes it so I am not constantly taking my foot off the accelerator to push the brake reducing fatigue. The worst part of the driving experience is when the battery is drained and the gas motor turns on. Fortunately I am getting over 50 miles per charge so the car is rarely driven in gas mode. I do like the flexibility of being able to take this car on long trips because it will run on gas. I use the hold mode to save the battery for when we are driving at lower speeds in city centers or small towns."

Anonymous, VA (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"In the ALL electric mode the car has amazing acceleration. The small footprint handles very well under hard acceleration"

Charles N., TN (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"The acceleration of the Volt is very impressive off the line. At higher speeds, acceleration is still adequate. Handling at low speeds is very good and I haven't experienced high speed speeds so I can't comment on that aspect of handling."

Bryan M., NY (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"Car acceleration is fast and nimble. With all the safety equipment it this far great. Love the parallel parking"

Anonymous, ON (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"The 0-30 acceleration of the Volt is outstanding. It's reasonably quick to 60 and freeway speeds, but it truly shines around town. It's exceptionally quiet and handling is secure. The suspension isn't quite as composed over rough roads as the typically 35k car, but it's certainly comfortable."

John B., KY (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"Acceleration and handling have exceeded my expectations. The power train is quite snappy and the car feels confident in turns and on winding roads. The combination of the electric motors and small gas engine provide a very nice balance of power and economy. Speaking of economy, I do 80-90% of my driving on all electric. 2000 miles and I have out a total of $26 of gas in it!"

Anonymous, CO (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"Excellent in both categories with electric. Acceleration with gas only isn't as rapid, but handling is still excellent."

Anonymous, MD (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"Great low--end torque"

Stephen K., CA (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"The acceleration is shocking; it can smoke the tires from a standing start. Unlike a gas engine there is no delay when the accelerator is mashed; acceleration is instant. Steering is quick and crisp."

Anonymous, ID (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"Most fun to drive of any car I've ever owned. Very quick acceleration. Electric motors are the way to go."

James D., CO (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"All was well but yesterday I got into a collision when the brakes FAILED. Taking it up with insurance and dealership. If you asked me three days ago, all would be fine!"

Anonymous, WA (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"It's way quicker than the reviews said it would be. Heck, it's quicker than the 2013."

Stephen G., AZ (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"Instant acceleration, regenerative braking, rarely use brake pedal, quiet, solid secure ride"

-D S., BC (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"Accelleratoion steering amd braking all goos. Nisibility im a;; directions is poor.Cannot tell where front of car isa for cprmering in tight places. rear camera is essential for bnacking up."

Douglas P., CA (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"Ride, handling, and acceleration are all just great. The car is also very quiet."

Dean G., IN (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"I was surprised at how quick it is. I feel comfortable knowing that if I need to accelerate and get up to speed quickly, the car can."

Carlo E., CA (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"Driving and handling are fine in every day use. If you push the car, the suspension is too soft and it can hop around on bumpy roads when cornering hard."

Anonymous, NY (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"It accelerates as expected given the electric motor. It drives like a sports car and handles almost as well as a track vehicle."

Douglas H., NE (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"It's quiet; has quick response and excellent handling."

Gordon A., ON (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"It is a yar car."

Anonymous, WA (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"The Volt glides over smooth roads. Its unlike most other vehicles because its so quiet, smooth, and aerodynamic. If you want to use sport mode, its pretty fun to drive as well. Braking distance could use a little reduction, but once you get used to how the regenerative braking works you'll quickly figure this out and then its no worries."

Anonymous, MI (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"handles better than my Firebird T/A - yes sounds crazy but it goes like a bat out of xxxx on my drive up the mountian just love it"

Roux L., CA (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Overall comfortable. Lacks lumbar support, electric adjustments and memory"

Anonymous, NY (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"Very comfortable ride in town and highway."

Dennis G., CA (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"Very good seats and interior, except for cheap feel of some dashboard controls."

James D., CO (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"While I had my previous Volt, I had developed a problem with my foot and back. I had not connected it to the car. After I leased the new car, the problems have diminished noticeably. I now believe that the seating has been improved."

Anonymous, CA (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"The car is easier to get in and out of than I expected. The seats are very comfortable and the ride is smooth. There is very little noise for a car this price and size."

Anonymous, ID (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"The air vent for driver is hindered by the steering wheel, which affects the amount of air that gets to driver."

Anonymous, CA (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"Leg room, support, steering wheel position"

-D S., BC (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"Much more comfortable than the 2013 Volt with more adjustment in the seats and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel. But no HomeLink? What is that about?"

Stephen G., AZ (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"Seats are a little shallow. Needs a lumbar support of any kind, either manual or electric."

Anonymous, MD (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"In electric drive mode this car is super quiet, very responsive. Seats are very comfortable and heated. The ride is smooth."

Anonymous, OH (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"A little more difficult to get in and out at my age (77)."

Anonymous, MD (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"Excellent Wonderful seats , no noise , rides as nicely as my other car a mercedes Benz ."

Chris B., ON (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"very comfortable supportive seating"

Leonard H., CA (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"The 2018 Chevrolet Volt is such a fun car to own ... I just love it so much. The ride is smooth, quiet and pretty comfortable but I do wish the seats had more padding. The acceleration is impressive off the line which makes the car great for city driving. The audio in the vehicle really sounds great which largely I believe is due to the quiet ride. Overall, the Volt is a great value and is a pleasure to own."

Bryan M., NY (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"Good front seat comfort. No engine noise while driving in electric mode."

Anonymous, CA (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"Front seats feel premium, like a luxury car. Rear seats are tight if you are behind someone tall. The car rides very comfortably with little to no noise in the cabin."

Reynaldo L., CA (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"Roof is too low for some seniors (they sometimes whack their heads on it while getting in if not warned to be careful). There is no handle to facilitate getting out of the front passenger seat."

Anonymous, ON (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"The rear seats can only hold 4 passengers. The middle seat has a cup holder/console in the way. The car is advertised as a five passenger vehicle and there are five seat belts, but the middle passenger would have to spread his/her legs to fit onto the seat."

Samuel N., NY (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"Nothing beats an electric car for a smooth quite driving experience. I use the app to turn the car on so the air conditioner can cool the car before I get in it all the time. It's one of my favorite features. I also don't feel bad about the car being on to cool or heat the car before I get in it. It's in electric mode so I'm not abusing the gas motor or the environment. In the summer the air conditioner works great, even in traffic."

Anonymous, VA (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"Very comfortable, very quiet, very smooth ride. I hope to never own a non-electric car in the future."

Anonymous, CA (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"Excellent value, especially with federal tax credit. Have been to the gas station only once in 9 months of ownership."

Anonymous, CA (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"L/100km is impressive. Have put 2200km since new and filled up twice and still have more than 1/2 tank of gas left. Hydro costs about $ 10."

Anonymous, ON (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"With the state excise tax rebate and the $7,500 federal tax rebate the car's $34,650 purchase price (fully loaded, negotiated price, including sales tax) quickly becomes $25,310. Factoring in the locally available free charging stations and free charging at work, it saves another $1,000/year compared to cars that achieve 40 mpg. Except for running the gas engine once every six months to dispose of expired gasoline, this car can be used as essentially a full-PEV rather than a PHEV."

Anonymous, MD (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"I leased my third Volt. The CA state rebate paid for the down payment. Each week, my gas savings are paying for the majority of the lease payment. This car is almost free. And, I am literally getting 400 MPG in mixed driving. CR has it all wrong about the Volt. It is a far, far, far, better and more entertaining car than the Prius you love so much. I've had three Volts now since 2012 without ONE issue, except some recalls. Reading your reviews of the Volt really make me angry. It does not matter if the Prius gets slightly better gas mileage, if like me, you use virtually NO GAS. I have 2,500 miles on the car and I'm still on the original tank of gas. You really need to reevaluate your Prius prejudice. You are doing a real injustice to a GREAT American Car!"

Robert R., CA (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"Great handling and the best mileage, especially if you do a lot of city driving."

Anonymous, CA (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"The Volt is one of the most underappreciated cars available. This is a well engineered vehicle that is amazingly efficient and quite enjoyable to drive. Of course fuel expenses are very low and so is cost of maintenance. The Volt is an excellent bridge to full EV driving."

John B., KY (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"Virtually no gas is used in city traffic. On the highway, the gasoline engine is used to charge the on-board battery when necessary. Thankfully, in Ontario at the moment, there many charging stations allowing charging for free."

Anonymous, ON (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"Excellent t car for the money , excellent electric range @ 80 + . Extremely good gas consumption 3 l per 100 km I have nothing but praise for this car ."

Chris B., ON (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"The Volt has all the interior features and technology you would pay a premium for in other EVs. I have not visited a gas station since I got it. You get a lot of perks for driving an EV, like close parking and free charging at many places. Best of all, with the Volt, you don't have electric range anxiety because the range extender motor will take over and give you 400+ miles of driving range!"

Anonymous, MI (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"The discounts from Massachusetts and tax crediits from the federal government were fabulous"

John M., MA (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"The price was within my budget and about what I expected."

Douglas H., NE (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"I got the base model and got the car for 32 out the door. After subsidies, I was at 23. That is the price of a much lessor car. With no gas to pay, this is a great deal"

Arthur W., CA (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"Excellent lease terms and car hardly uses any gas"

Caroline B., CA (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"drove 4,000 miles to spend my first $100 on gas - awesome"

Roux L., CA (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"I got a great lease of $99/mo with $5000 down pay (-$1500 state rebate) It is because of this deal that I got Volt over Bolt, which is $289/mo, same terms."

Hongche L., CA (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"My 34 mile each way commute is all electric (employer installed 210V 14A EV outlets), and the car is eligible for CA HOV bridge toll lanes, saving me over $300/ month."

J H., CA (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"My husband can charge at home and at work and he's saved over $300 in gas compared to his old diesel Jetta sedan."

Anonymous, MD (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"Never go to a gas station for 10 years!!!"

Anonymous, CA (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"Great fuel economy, by home charging, I have not t used any fuel in over 1 month"

Richard B., ON (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"Reliable, solidly built, reasonably comfortable, excellent audio system quality and highly efficient. Would recommend fast charger option."

Glen S., CA (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"Battery life is excellent. Almost never use gasoline. Summer range is 64, winter about 44. My daily commute is always within range."

Anonymous, NY (2018 Chevrolet Volt)

"Great value for a the best hybrid with 50 mile electric range."

Dennis G., CA (2018 Chevrolet Volt)
