Looking at the Chrysler 300's basic spec sheet suggests an old-school highway cruiser: rear-wheel drive, available V8 power, and sizeable dimensions. But there's much more to the story. This version of Chrysler's flagship is a capable, sophisticated, and luxuriously large automobile. Brawny and muscular, the sedan packs plenty of punch in both V6 and V8 forms.

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2014 Chrysler 300 owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"Sometimes it is very dark"

Anonymous, LA (2014 Chrysler 300 3.6-L V6)

"Backup camera replaced due to water in it from car wash"

Anonymous, MI (2014 Chrysler 300 C 3.6-L V6)

"This Chrysler 300 C letter car is the ultimate model in the Chrysler lineup, however, they failed miserably in the build sheet, and left off the warning sensors, but included every other option, leaving the quite common warning sensors off. Consequently, you don't get an alert or notification when there is a vehicle in your blind spot, or when you are backing close to something, which should be included on a vehicle of this caliber"

David C., PA (2014 Chrysler 300 C 5.7-L V8)

"Back up camera is grainy at night, making it difficult to see what you are looking at as you are backing up. Dealer advises us that it is OK and within spec. It is definitely the poorest excuse for a quality car like the 300-C. We are very disappoin"

David C., PA (2014 Chrysler 300 C 5.7-L V8)

"Screen would wiggle and disappear"

Anonymous, IN (2014 Chrysler 300 C 5.7-L V8)
CD player

"Would not play some brands of MP3 audio books"

Anonymous, AZ (2014 Chrysler 300 C 5.7-L V8)
Display screen difficult to see

"The camera is most difficult to see anything if the area isn't well lit with parking lot lights as the taillights red glow cause a red grainy effect in the picture. The picture detail is very bad compared to the GM backup camera and I can compare it to my 2010 Avalanche which is superior"

David C., PA (2014 Chrysler 300 C 5.7-L V8)
Display screen goes blank

"It only went blank once, when I started the car. Radio continued to work but could not be controlled (volume, on/off, tuning) even by knobs. Next time I started the car (a few hours later) it lit up okay. However, it is now dim when I start the car (including rear camera) but brightens up after a few minutes. I have an appointment at the dealership in a few days. I have an extended warranty until 60,000 miles so it should be covered."

Anonymous, OH (2014 Chrysler 300 Base 3.6-L V6)

"Back up display goes blank occasionally."

Paul C., IL (2014 Chrysler 300 C 5.7-L V8)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"Navigation system required replacement twice, due to it rebooting frequently and not working; replacements were refurbished units."

John D., TX (2014 Chrysler 300 C 3.6-L V6)

"Updating the gps is next to impossible, and, even if done, takes an inordinate amount of time and steps"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Chrysler 300 Base 3.6-L V6)

"Updates to GPS system are expensive and difficult to install with poor instructions."

Anonymous, PA (2014 Chrysler 300 Base 3.6-L V6)

"Required an update soon after purchasing. Found out that the update was through Sirius, which required paying for a subscription beyond the one year complimentary subscription"

David M., NC (2014 Chrysler 300 C 3.6-L V6)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Phone paring frequently disconnects, without any apparent reason or notice."

John D., TX (2014 Chrysler 300 C 3.6-L V6)

"Phone pairing is also problematic. We have Samsung Galaxy S4's (2). Car & phones indicate they are paired. The system will dial #s but only static is heard when the call connects"

Anonymous, SC (2014 Chrysler 300 C 5.7-L V8)

"bluetooth pairing with cell phone doesn't work on a consistent basis"

David M., NC (2014 Chrysler 300 C 3.6-L V6)

"The phone only pairs up about 20% of the time when I get in the car. The only response from Chrysler was: buy a different phone. Look at the ones that will work on our website (which I never could find)"

Stephen H., AZ (2014 Chrysler 300 S 3.6-L V6)

"Starting around Sept 2019 my iPhone 6S which is always updated to the latest iOS would lose pairing w/ the auto's Bluetooth whenever I left the car & had my phone w/ me. This has been extremely annoying since either I could not be compliant w/ hands free driving or would have to take time when getting back into my car & pair it up again w/ Bluetooth. After several trips to the dealer, they replaced a module & did either firmware or software updates but I continue to have the same problem. The service mgr spoke w/ tech support at Chrysler & their response is "it's an operating system incompatibility". My phone iOS is currently version 13.5 & Chrysler said that model car's Bluetooth was incompatible with anything above iOS 11. Obviously Chrysler does NOT want to commit resources to updating firmware or software to maintain compatibility with smartphone operating system updates. Therefore, I would never purchase another one of their vehicles. Also, I've had numerous problems with the voice recognition understanding names I tell it to call. Also, sometimes the VR button on the steering wheel does not function. All very annoying especially since I use my cell phone for business when in the car."

Anonymous, AZ (2014 Chrysler 300 Unsure 3.6-L V6)
Radio

"Radio would not receive sirius radio stations. Dealership replaced antenna, which fixed the problem."

Anonymous, LA (2014 Chrysler 300 Unsure 3.6-L V6)
Speakers

"One of the speakers just quit. For a car that has less than 20K miles on it, that's discouraging. That is not covered under warranty so I will need to replace myself. don't feel like spending the money right now."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Chrysler 300 S 3.6-L V6)

"Bad amplifier"

Peter R., NJ (2014 Chrysler 300 SRT 6.4-L V8)
Steering wheel controls

"The cruise control doesn't work all the time. They still haven't fixed it because the dealer says it worked for them. They need to take it out on longer drive"

Anonymous, MI (2014 Chrysler 300 C 3.6-L V6)
Voice control commands

"This is all tied into the radio in this car. It has been replaced 4x at the dealer's expense. Just keeps dying & for a car that such low miles it's ridiculous. However, the voice control is the worst. It almost NEVER understands me. I have even had a professional voice actor with perfect annunciation work with the system & it didn't understand him most of the time as well. The dealer said it's a weak link in the vehicle. Technology too new. Doesn't work well in most cars, blah blah blah."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Chrysler 300 S 3.6-L V6)

"Since the very beginning, the car has had trouble understanding me. I do have a NY accent, which I thought might've been problem. But I had a voice over actor, with a well modulated voice try the system & it had problems understanding him as well. Further I have had to have the voice control module replaced (warrantied) because it stopped working completely. But even with a new module & software update, it is still hit & miss whether it understands the command."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Chrysler 300 S 3.6-L V6)

"Voice control does recognize anything spoken. Responds with I didn't get that or instructions on how to complete voice action, even though you've done exactly what it tells you to do. This is a new problem that started approximately 4/15/15"

Anonymous, SC (2014 Chrysler 300 C 5.7-L V8)

"I mentioned this in my last screen's message."

Anonymous, AZ (2014 Chrysler 300 Unsure 3.6-L V6)

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"Noisy compressor at low RPM. Replaced with no problem by the dealer"

Leon E., NM (2014 Chrysler 300 C 5.7-L V8)
Automatic climate control

"climate control did not control temperature as per setting."

Anonymous, AB (2014 Chrysler 300 Base 3.6-L V6)

"problem was result of malfunction of the onboard computer... technician had to 'flash' the computer to re-start the program for climate control"

Dan G., WI (2014 Chrysler 300 S 3.6-L V6)

"Sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. Will hang up on heat or AC and will not change, regardless of temperature setting or temperature inside car."

Anonymous, LA (2014 Chrysler 300 3.6-L V6)

"Does not hold temperature anywhere near setting. Does not switch between heat and cool when needed. Works well on manual control"

Anonymous, LA (2014 Chrysler 300 3.6-L V6)

"temp set at 70 degrees. temp would continue to go up until it was unbearable. I would open windows in winter and shut climate control down, then after a while I would put it back on auto, sometime it would stay at 70 and other times the temp would keep increasing until I did the same procedure. I took it to the dealer under warranty and they fixed it for now. i hope I don't have any more problems because I am just out of warranty. my Toyota has never given me problems outside of routine mainten"

Arlene G., NJ (2014 Chrysler 300 S 3.6-L V6)

"The climate control is either heating at full heat or cooling at full cooling and does not control the air temperature to match the set point"

Amitabh G., MI (2014 Chrysler 300 S 3.6-L V6)

"Recall by factory for reprogram of auto climate system"

Anonymous, MI (2014 Chrysler 300 Base 3.6-L V6)

"Auto temperature control did not work on passenger side. Dealer replaced a control motor for the problem"

Gary V., AZ (2014 Chrysler 300 S 3.6-L V6)

"when first starting, will not blow out the front vents for about 3- minutes. Also, if you have on cold and want to warm up, you have to move temp up to hi then back down to desired temp (ie: 75). And vice-versa if hot and you want cold, have to move to low then back up to desired temp"

Carlos M., TX (2014 Chrysler 300 S 3.6-L V6)

"Intermittently blows hot air when it should be cold or vice-versa. Can usually be rectified by shutting down car, then restarting."

Dale R., NE (2014 Chrysler 300 C 3.6-L V6)

"Climate control, whether on automatic or not, does not work at all. May blow hot when it should be cool, or vice versa. May blow through vents that it is not set for, and may be hard to get to blow through proper vents. Local dealership has worked on it several times, but they cannot make it work."

Anonymous, LA (2014 Chrysler 300 3.6-L V6)

"AT TIMES I have to turn AC off and on to get it to work properly"

Charles W., MI (2014 Chrysler 300 C 3.6-L V6)

"climate control blow cold air when I need heat then wants to roast you out when you use heat. Local repair shop was unable to find problem."

Anonymous, NC (2014 Chrysler 300 Base 3.6-L V6)

"Automatic climate control stopped working about 2 years after I purchased car. Used manual controls for some time. Automatic climate control actuator was replaced during the past year, and it works well now."

Anonymous, LA (2014 Chrysler 300 Unsure 3.6-L V6)
Blower (fan) motor

"This problem is intermittent. After approx. 5 hours of driving, the cold air coming from the A/C starts getting warmer and warmer, until there is no cold air at all. Also, at the same time, the blower fan motor starts running slower and slower until there is just a trickle of warm air coming from the vents."

Anonymous, AZ (2014 Chrysler 300 C 3.6-L V6)
Condenser

"faulty condenser"

Ken K., MI (2014 Chrysler 300 John Varvatos Luxury 5.7-L V8)
Evaporator

"Evaporator has been replaced two times in vehicle. Dealer explained that part from factory was made incorrectly. Vehicle is still under base warranty"

Gary V., AZ (2014 Chrysler 300 S 3.6-L V6)

"Have had to replace this when the car had less then 20K miles on it. I thought this was outrageous since it was NOT covered under warranty. Further I have had to have the Air Conditioner filters replaced 3x in the past 18 mos. I find this infuriating regardless of the fact that LA has dirty air."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Chrysler 300 S 3.6-L V6)
Heated or cooled seat controls

"The 300-C is equipped with heated and cooled front seats, and controlled with the in dash info system. When you select the driver's seat for cooling, it intermittently may stay on or turn off within 5 seconds. We have had this checked, bad elec boar"

David C., PA (2014 Chrysler 300 C 5.7-L V8)
Heater system

"This passed winter, I would set the temp at 70 degrees, and the temp would continue to rise until we could not stand it any longer and would shut the climate system down and open window. I took it to the dealer and they fixed it for now. I hope I don't have a problem with it now that it is just out of warranty. The Toyota has not given me any problems in the 12 years I have owned it. I also smell exhaust from the Chrysler. I told the dealer about this the first year, they said nothing was wrong"

Arlene G., NJ (2014 Chrysler 300 S 3.6-L V6)

"Automatic Temp control during cold weather, goes to max heating capacity and never stops even when cabin reaches set temp"

Anonymous, VT (2014 Chrysler 300 Base 3.6-L V6)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Gear selector or linkage

"Gear Shift lever would not always go to Park, would drop into reverse. As I'm told it's an electronic shifting system. There was/is a recall for that reason. I took it to the closest dealer from Santa Barbara, Crown Chrysle,Dodge in Ventura on 3 occasions. Shifting mechanism is better, but occasionally still goes into reverse, I have to be vigilant. I am a commercial driver with a TCP number and also do Uber."

Jeff A., CA (2014 Chrysler 300 Base 3.6-L V6)

"Recall because people were having stupidity moment and not putting the car into park and were getting out of the vehicle while it was running. They recalled the vehicle to adjust the computer to make it harder to be a dumb ass. I did not have the issue myself"

Anonymous, VT (2014 Chrysler 300 Base 3.6-L V6)

Anonymous, NY (2014 Chrysler 300 C 3.6-L V6)

"When slowing to a soft stop, the transmission would jerk when car came to a full stop. Like someone hit my rear end"

Anonymous, FL (2014 Chrysler 300 3.6-L V6)

"This vehicle had a recall for transmission. you want to put in park & it goes into Reverse. took Chrysler 300 in for servicecouple of times on the same problem, still knot really fix correctly, its better but still drops into reverse 2/3 times a week. I'm used to it & when I park I look down at shift lever to make sure I'm in park.... I am a Class "B" driver, large Passenger occupant & Shuttle Busses."

What Owners Say

Alternator

"This car was/is a rollaway risk. This car does not stay in “park” and slips into reverse when parked with the engine running. We reported an incident to NHTSA in 2-2016 after our car shot across a parking lot in reverse with 3 passengers inside the car after the driver left the engine running, placed the car in reverse, exited the vehicle and walked down a block. Chrysler denies negligence but later recalled this vehicle following a high profile death related to this issue in another Chrysler model with a similar transmission. Chrysler also recalled this vehicle multiple times due to alternator problems. https://www.carcomplaints.com/Chrysler/300/2014 /recalls/ It’s been inconvenient to take this vehicle in to service the multiple recalls. This car operates with a key fob and push start ignition. The push start ignition is right next to the push start radio. I often shut off the radio when I intend to shut off the engine. This could result in asphyxiation if l accidentally leave my car running in my garage. That is just one of the lousy designs of this car. I will say that the car is large and spacious, has a huge trunk and looks sleek from the outside. For a tall person/family, this car is a great option. For its size, the gas mileage is great."

Anonymous, CT (2014 Chrysler 300)
Battery (not hybrid or electric)

"the car was running. I stopped, put it on park then it completely shut down. I thought it was the engine but the dealer said it was the battery and since it was replaced I have had not issues with it"
