Honda Civic vs. Mazda3 Compact Car Face-Off
Consumer Reports looks at the strengths and weaknesses of these close competitors
The Honda Civic and Mazda3 offer more than just economical transportation. Over the years, these two compact cars have stood out from the pack because of their wide variety of options. Want a mainstream sedan with a fuel-efficient engine? You’re covered. Prefer a hatchback? Both automakers offer one. Interested in a high-performance compact car that delivers sharp handling and strong acceleration? Mazda and Honda have choices for you, too.
With the ongoing proliferation of SUV variants, along with the global supply-chain constraints, these two cars are no longer sales-volume superstars. Honda sold nearly 134,000 Civics in 2022, down from over 263,000 in 2021. Mazda, traditionally a lower-volume brand, sold nearly 28,000 Mazda3s, down from more than 37,000 in 2021.
