The next muscle car era will be electric, with the aptly named Dodge Charger leading the way. The storied Stellantis brand showcased a fresh take on the genre available as an EV or gas-only car. Both sedan and coupe body styles will be available, essentially replacing both the Charger and the Challenger.

2024-Present

Current Generation

The redesigned Charger is offered in both coupe and sedan configurations, with a choice of electric or gas-only powertrains. The electric car is known as the Charger Daytona, and it is initially packaged as an R/T with 496 hp and a 308-mile range, and the Scat Pack with 670 hp and a 241-mile range. For traditionalists, there is also a twin-turbocharged inline-six engine available with 420 or 550 hp that comes later. Each gas engine is coupled to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Every Charger comes with all-wheel drive and standard AEB, BSW, RCTW, LKA, LDW, ACC and LCA. Also new, whether it's a two-door or a four-door, this Charger is a hatchback, with a folding rear seat. The modern cabin makes use of screens for gauges, controls, and customization, with many performance settings available.

2011-2023

2011 Redesign Year

An extensive 2011 reworking made the Charger more responsive and comfortable. This version of the car has better outward visibility, a nicer interior and a more comfortable ride. Handling is greatly improved over the previous model and the optional touchscreen is one of the easiest to use on the market. Safety features include antilock brakes, traction control, brake-assist, and stability control -- all as standard equipment. Charger's optional adaptive cruise control system includes forward-collision warning. A slick eight-speed automatic transmission was added to the V6 in 2012. Exterior and interior updates arrived for 2015, further improving the Charger. The power-mad can have a 485-hp 6.4-liter or the Hellcat's 707-hp supercharged V8. All-wheel drive is optional on mainstream versions. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were available starting in 2018. A new "Widebody" model, with its integrated fender flares adding 3.5 inches of body width, joined the line for 2020.

2006-2010

2006 Redesign Year

The contemporary version of the Dodge Charger arrived in 2006 with styling reminiscent of the original 1960s models. It was available with a 3.5-liter V6 or a 5.7-liter V8, which got only 17 mpg overall in our testing. Suspension architecture relies on Mercedes-Benz hardware (as the car was developed during the time Daimler-Benz owned Chrysler), however that first version doesn't shine in terms of ride or handling. Ride is stiff and steering is light. IIHS side crash-test results were poor when tested without the optional curtain airbags.
