This iteration of the Dodge Grand Caravan is better than the model it replaced. Despite some notable new features, though, it hadn't risen to the level needed to compete against better rivals. Safety features include standard stability control and curtain airbags. A blind-spot detection system is also available as an option. It’s a good find if you can locate one equipped with the feature.

    Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

    Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

    What Owners Say

    Calipers

"Front right caliper froze, front calipers, rotors, and hoses replaced. Cause unknown"

Anonymous, VA (2009 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 4.0-L V6)

    "Rear caliper 'hung up'"

Joe S., TX (2009 Dodge Grand Caravan)
    Normal routine brake wear

"Brakes wore down quickly and rotors required replacement"

Anonymous, (2009 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.3-L V6)

"The front end of the vehicle is very hard on brakes."

Anonymous, TX (2009 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 4.0-L V6)

"I replaced the front rotors and pads after 90000 miles. I bought quality rotors and pads and I believe that I will have the same performance from these parts. I am not a driver that tailgates. My cars last about 200,000 miles as I drive carefully and I change vehicle fluids in a timely manner. Fresh engine oil extends the life of the engine."

Anonymous, NJ (2009 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.3-L V6)

"Had the brakes replace due to normal wear but the brake seal blew causing brake fluid to leak. It was under warranty, so was replaced without charge."

Brian E., CO (2009 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.8-L V6)
    Premature brake wear

"The rear brakes wore out in less than 20,000 miles. This has happened twice before. The problem is caused by bad calipers."

Anonymous, MI (2009 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.3-L V6)

"Brakes have been a problem on this vehicle from Day 1. I'm on my fourth set in the front and the same on the back"

Normie R., NY (2009 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.3-L V6)

"Brakes have required more than anticipated maintenance for the number of Klm's driven"

Anonymous, ON (2009 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.3-L V6)

"Brake life is terrible including rotors. Add calipers locking up and it's really bad"

Anonymous, KY (2009 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.3-L V6)

"Generally short life on front brakes. Also premature brake wear due to rear caliper hung up/failure"

Joe S., TX (2009 Dodge Grand Caravan)
    Pulsation or vibration

"Brake rotors and pads wear very quickly, faster than any other vehicle I've ever owned before. Vibration in the brakes were even present in the vehicle when I first purchased it and the dealer didn't acknowledge it. A short time later I brought it to an independent auto mechanic and he said the rotors were warped. This has happened to this vehicle now 3 times and I do not brake excessively whatsoever."

Anonymous, MI (2009 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.8-L V6)
    Rotors

"The rotors are always pulsating. They overheat in a few months, get warped and need replaced. This has always been a problem with this car. I suspected it may be caused by too much residual pressure in the brake line, causing the rotors to drag slightly. I have replaced the calipers because of the high mileage and preventive maintenance. That didn't solve my problem. With the wheels removed it takes 32 ft lbs to move the rotor. I opened the caliper bleeder to release any pressure and it still took 32 ft lbs to spin the front wheels. So that would eliminate the residual pressure theory. I am in the process of researching calipers with less drag, to decrease heat. These brakes stop very well and have a solid pedal. And I still get over 20000 miles wear on a set of brake pads, and I am a very aggressive driver. This vehicle is one of my favorites, it's comfortable, and versatile. The sto & go seats are pure genius. If other vehicle manufacturers had this option I may give them a try."

Anonymous, (2009 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.3-L V6)

"This is a constant problem I supposedly have the highest quality rotors but they don't seem to last new set every 40000 k or so"

Anonymous, ON (2009 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.3-L V6)

"Rotors are not heavy duty enough for the van when loaded. Chatters on steep downhills. Wear quickly."

Tony P., BC (2009 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.3-L V6)

"This was covered in the last segment."

Anonymous, NJ (2009 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.3-L V6)

"The Centric rotors put on by a local shop apparently rust from the inside. I've never heard of this happening before"

Normie R., NY (2009 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.3-L V6)

    Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

Anonymous, VA (2009 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.8-L V6)
    Shocks or struts

"The front end of the vehicle is hard on shocks and struts."

Anonymous, TX (2009 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 4.0-L V6)
Steering linkage (includes rack and pinion)

"over 100000 miles. seals in rack leaked"

Thomas K., NY (2009 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.8-L V6)
    Tie rods

"Not sure how it happened, but was told the tie rod had broken"

Anonymous, AB (2009 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.3-L V6)
    Wheel bearings

"There was a recall on the wheel bearings but the dealer indicated my bearings were OK and didn't need replacing. By the time the work was done the warranty period had expired. I should have insisted on having it done but I didn't press the issue hard enough"

Anonymous, ON (2009 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.3-L V6)

"changed 4 wheel bearings in 18months, although they were not OEM, but a inferior parts source at a independent garage."

Anonymous, ON (2009 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.3-L V6)

Anonymous, MA (2009 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.8-L V6)
    Evaporator

"Rear evaporator was leaking,11 yrs. old and over 100K miles, since I don't carry passengers, I eliminated the rear evaporator. The front A/C still delivery 40° F out of the vent so I am comfortable."

Anonymous, (2009 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.3-L V6)
    Heater system

"Plastic pipe fitting cracked at molding point on the heater hose system causing coolant to spray out on engine. I found that this is a known issue with this part from reading online forums."

Brian E., CO (2009 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.8-L V6)

"if car battery is disconnected the heater system gets stuck on recirculating air thus causing foggy interior glass."

Anonymous, ON (2009 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.3-L V6)
    Refrigerant leaks

"refrigerant leaks through exhaust, car overheats, motor needs to be replaced. car is a lemon, generally speaking: 2 injectors have had to be replaced, battery has been replaced twice in 2 years, now the fob starts the alarm (maybe)but doesn't lock the car..."

Anonymous, TX (2009 Dodge Grand Caravan Unsure Unsure)

"We have had consistent problems with refrigerant leaks. The auto repair shop has replaced and repaired this system several times; costing several thousand dollars, and it still does not work. The shop reported the problem being in with the rear part of the system (servicing the back seats of the van). It would cast another several hundred dollars to get it fixed or the rear portion shut off"

    Bernard L., MN (2009 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.8-L V6)

"The discharge hose going from the high-pressure port of the compressor to the condenser failed and leaked all the refrigerant. This was the second time this has happened. The hose was replaced in 2011 for the same reason"

    What Owners Say

    Doors or sliding doors

"The passenger door side's electrically driven doors will frequently not close all the way, and then go back to its original starting position leaving the door wide open. I checked the track for obstacles or foreign objects in the way, but nothing is there. I sometimes have to help pull the door shut while it is closing electronically to bypass the problem of it not shutting all the way. If parked uphill, the problem happens with a greater frequency."

Anonymous, MI (2009 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.8-L V6)
