With its Hemi V8, this version of the Ram is among the quickest trucks we've tested. But it's also one of the thirstiest, averaging a paltry 11 mpg. A jittery ride and cumbersome handling hurt the Ram's overall score, as did the barely adequate brakes. The cabin is a bit noisy, and access is very difficult. On the plus side, our Ram had a large cargo bed and tows more than 8,000 pounds.

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Satisfaction Owner Satisfaction To learn about satisfaction, CR has collected survey data from our annual survey on more than half a million vehicles. Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Engine Minor

What Owners Say

Engine knock or ping

"The problem started soon after I bought it new or it was pre-existing. Periodically, the engine misses and runs rough with low speed and little power. Not all cylinders are firing. After a 5-10 seconds or so of trying to accelerate, the engine seems to catch and the misfiring ends. The check engine light flashes while the engine is misfiring and stays on after it goes back to normal. This happens regularly about once a week and goes in spurts where it will happen almost daily (sometimes multiple times daily) and other periods when there may be several weeks between it happening. Have had a tune up with no improvement. Mechanic has experienced it happening and does not have an explanation for why and when it happens."

Body control module

"When the body control module started to evidence itself as a problem it came as intermittent lights turning on and off by themselves. My mechanic diagnosed the situation and we started a search to find a replacement. A replacement was not available from the manufacturer so i went online and purchased one from north Carolina. Once installed the vehicle has been 100% reliable and without further issues."

Anonymous, OH (2005 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)

"I had previous experience with the Lamp Out indicator on the dash telling me that a light bulb was burned out and needed replacement. When the BCM went out the Lamp Out indicator illuminated but at the same time one head light would work and the second headlight wouldn't; when the bright lights were turned on the opposite bulb would work and the one that worked on low beams didn't; the left turn signal frequency increased; and when the fog lights were turned on all the headlights would turn off. I replaced the BCM with a used unit I purchased from North Carolina as the units are no longer available from Chrysler."
