This version of the Ram was a huge improvement over previous Rams. A switch to coil springs at the rear dramatically improved the ride. Cabin quietness approached luxury levels. Acceleration from the 5.7-liter V8 is effortless, and the crew cab's rear seat is vast. The Hemi engine's fuel economy has improved, and though it's still not great, it is competitive for the class.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, leaks.

What Owners Say

Exhaust leaks

"There is an exhaust Leak ....I think it is the exhaust manifold gasket(s) ....Too expensive to repair ...I put up with the ticking noise ."

Anonymous, ON (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)

"We took the truck in for an oil change and asked if they could find out what the noise was (kind of a clicking noise). My mechanic told me it was the exhaust and really needed to be fixed as it could cause more problems later. The noise is annoying, but other than that, it doesn't hurt the performance of the vehicle"

Anonymous, ND (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 Laramie 3.7-L V6)

"Noticed noise from drivers side exhaust manifold; dealership informed me that two manifold bolts had broken, replaced bolts and gasket. Approximately 10-12 months later, noticed noise from passenger side exhaust manifold. Took car to non-dealership mechanic who informed me that two bolts were broken on the passenger side manifold. Mechanic advised that this was a common problem and the manifolds warp causing the bolts to break. Recommendation was to replace manifold with aftermarket manifold designed to avoid warping issue. Did so, no problems since."

Anonymous, AB (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 Sport 5.7-L V8)
Exhaust manifold

"Five broken bolts on exhaust manifold. Was told be dealer this was common problem with this truck"

Anonymous, MT (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)

"2 manifold bolts were broke on the drivers side"

Anonymous, OR (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)

"Required replacement of 4 broken exhaust manifold bolts - 2 on each side"

Anonymous, MB (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)

"had broken manifold bolts"

Anonymous, ND (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 Sport 5.7-L V8)

"Both exhaust manifold gaskets have begun to leak, which my mechanic found when he started it cold. He said he heard an abnormal noise and the leaks became obvious when he did a smoke test for leaks."

Anonymous, NC (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)

"Exhaust manifold gasket failure, had to be replaced"

Bruce R., WA (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)

Anonymous, WA (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 TRX 5.7-L V8)

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

Rust

"Rocker panels rusted thru from the inside. Rear wheel wells rusting around the edges. Sales rep at Dodge dealership said this happens frequently with 2008-2011 Rams."

Anonymous, MI (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)

"The bottom panels below the doors are rusted thru ....Big holes ."

Anonymous, ON (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)

"Body rust in many places"

Anonymous, PA (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 Sport 3.7-L V6)

"bottom side rocker panels below the doors are rusting, may require work"

Anonymous, WI (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 4.7-L V8)

"Rust on the bottom right fender on a garage kept truck"

Glenn G., PA (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)

"Over the past winter , rust has started breaking out , I did a lot of highway driving 200 km /day for work ....In Ontario , Canada we use a lot of salt on our roads. I'm going to get rust spots sanded out & repainted ."

Michel B., ON (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)

"running boards at bottom of cab are rusting while no other locations on the truck are having problems"

Anonymous, WI (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 4.7-L V8)

"The rust on the Ram will stop the vehicle from being used due to completely rusting out."

Anonymous, MD (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)

"These things *still* rust out at the front wheel wells. Even with deal rust proofing guaranteed for 10 years, and with Krown rust control most (but not all) years the driver's side front wheel well panel is in the final stages of perforation rust, with a hole about to appear. Granted, we live in a *major* snow belt area, but what is it about RAM front fenders that they rust when most of the rest of the truck is still fine?"

Anonymous, ON (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 ST 4.7-L V8)

"I live in Minnesota so unfortunately they use salt in the winter on the highways. That said, there is significant rust above both of the rear wheels on the pickup box. Also, there is significant rust on the bottom of the cab on both sides for the vehicle. Dodge seems to rust worse than some other brands, especially on the areas I mentioned."

Anonymous, MN (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 4.7-L V8)

"Rust started appearing last year on the lower cab below rear passenger door .....and this past winter it has rusted through , fist size hole . Other areas at wheel wells starting to rust . Plan to take it in to be repaired this Spring after / when I get a company work car - Hyundai Tucson SUV ."

Michel B., ON (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"Had to replace cab brake light assembly twice due to seal leaking water into rear seat area. Why do seals become problem after 4 years? How about replacing seal instead of entire assembly. Also door drain holes have clogged & trapped water"

Anonymous, AR (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)

"Seal for center mounted brake light allowed rain to leak onto floor of back seat. This was second time I had to replace the assembly to stop leak. Dodge should modify assembly or provide a replacement seal."

Bob C., AR (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)

"Weather stripping around third brake light deteriorated and allowed water to enter cab underneath rear seats. Seams to be a common problem with Dodge Ram trucks according to reviews found on blogs."

Gary B., AL (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 Laramie 5.7-L V8)

"Found water puddled in the storage well under the back seat several times. Checked on-line for advice. Others experienced same problem. Fix was to replace the gasket/seal around the top light on the back of the cab, above rear window."

J H., NC (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)
Seals and/or weather-stripping

"Seal/weatherstripping around brake light on top/rear of cab leaked badly. Water accumulated in depressions under back seat. Not uncommon problem, apparently, b/c internet advice worked--replace gasket."

Anonymous, NC (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)

"Sound of air around doors starting last 6 months. Continuous and more noticeable with time."

Frances H., LA (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)

"Rain water leaks into the cab: significant long term issue where water would pool in the storage space under the back seats. Caused by pine needles clogging a rain water drain above the back window. This led to water pooling in the center lamp housing at the back of the cab, which then overflowed into the cab."

Bruce R., WA (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)
Squeaks or rattles

"The doors in my truck have begun to squeal horribly when opened. I've tried WD40 and white spray lithium grease, but relief is only temporary. I told my mechanic to tackle the problem when he was changing oil, but he thinks that unless we replace the actual door springs and rockers, it is just going to squeal/squeak from now on!"

Anonymous, NC (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)

"Doors grind and are stiff on opening and closing. Greasing the joints did not solve the problem."

Anonymous, PA (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 Sport 3.7-L V6)
Wind noise

"A door was replaced due to rust."

Anonymous, (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 Unsure 5.7-L V8)

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

Blower (fan) motor

"A/C quit working. System check indicated no loss of Freon, but the fan for recirculating was not working. Had it changed."

Anonymous, LA (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)

"Fan would not come on, then made a clicking noise, finally came on after about 5 minutes of driving. Eventually quit working altogether. Got it fixed. Same thing happened about a year & 1/2 later. Got it fixed again. Now no problems."

Anonymous, TX (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)

"Blower fan quit. Was replaced. Then about a year later, had to replace again along with sensors that were not working. Heater core works on passenger side, not driver side."

Anonymous, TX (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)
Evaporator

"The dealer said the reason the A/C doesn't work is because the evaporator needs replacement. We may or may not have it repaired."

Brian D., MI (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 5.7-L V8)
Heater system

"fan to defrost stopped working and was not covered by warranty. very expensive to fix"

Todd C., CO (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)
Refrigerant leaks

"The leak is inside the cab and the dash has to come out to fix the leak. This is a current problem and is not yet fix."

Ronald M., AL (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)

"A/C system requires periodic charging."

Brian D., MI (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 5.7-L V8)

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Antilock system (ABS)

"Speed Sensor on right rear wheel went out causing alarm for ABS, ESP-BAS, and traction control. This is the second time this same sensor has failed. It isn't covered by Extended Warranty and it isn't cheap to fix."

Frances H., LA (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)
Calipers

"Lt front brake would grab/hold very intermittently. Brake would overheat. Replaced calipers/rotors/lines on both front brakes."

Anonymous, NC (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)

"seized and cracked in half while driving on highway"

Michelle P., ON (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 5.7-L V8)
Premature brake wear

"During a trip we experienced a loud noise coming from the brakes on our RAM truck at about 50,000 miles. This was odd because we had replaced the brakes at about 25,000 miles. We had to replace not only the pads, but the rotors, and the calipers. Because the truck had been primarily driven on the interstate, I felt that this was excessive wear."

Anonymous, OH (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 4.7-L V8)
Rotors

"It is my understanding that because the rotors on new vehicles are so much thinner then previously, one almost always has to replace the rotors with new brake pads."

Anonymous, OH (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 4.7-L V8)

"Rt front brakes would lock up intermittently--every 3 or 4 months. Not driveable until cooled down. Replacing rotors, calipers, and brake lines on both front brakes appeared to fix problem."

J H., NC (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)

Body Hardware

Power or manual windows, locks and latches, tailgate, hatch or trunk, doors or sliding doors, mirrors, seat controls, safety belts, sunroof, convertible top.

What Owners Say

Locks and latches

"The key lock on the rear tailgate corroded completely within a few years. The new one is already starting to corrode again and needs a shot of rust control inside every month or two in the winter. It seems like the angle of the tailgate is such that splash seems to hit the lock, although the truck does have factory mud flaps, etc."

Anonymous, ON (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 ST 4.7-L V8)
Tailgate, hatch or trunk

"The hatch will not always close on the first or second attempt. It once open by itself while driving when I thought it had latched shut"

Anonymous, WI (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 4.7-L V8)

"The torsion bar assembly on the tailgate has a loud bang when you lift the tailgate. Garage kept truck, should never have failed"

Glenn G., PA (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)

"tailgate latch just stopped working. Problems with rusting and quality of parts. Tailgate would not stay closed while driving had to replace entire mechanism."

Anonymous, WI (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 4.7-L V8)

Drive System

Driveshaft or axle, CV joint, differential, transfer case, 4WD/AWD components, driveline vibration, traction control, electronic stability control (ESC), electrical failure.

What Owners Say

Differential

"Needed replacement at 70,000+ kilometers. (2 months after powertrain warranty expired - 62 months)"

Anonymous, MB (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)
Driveshaft or axle

"The drive shaft fell off the vehicle"

Anonymous, MD (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 ST 5.7-L V8)
Traction control

"The speed sensor for the right rear wheel malfunctioned causing ABS and traction control systems to alarm. The vehicle could be driven for a limited distance (with care). Ride was not smooth, as the rest of the speed control system kept trying to adjust to the erroneous reading from the malfunctioning speed sensor. The cruise control also would not engage."

Anonymous, LA (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)
Transfer case

"Would not go in gear."

Anonymous, PA (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 5.7-L V8)

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

Interior lights

"The center ceiling panel lights/map lights fail to operate as a night reading light ; they will not come on as designed (individually turn on when depressed). For them to come on in this manner, driver needs to use the dash-light/interior lights control dial to turn on interior lights then the other light that is not needed must be turned off, but then the rear seat light is on and the dash lights are on bright. Dealer tried diagnosis and determined the controller in the center panel was not functioning properly and the entire panel wire harness with the light piece would need to be replaced for a fix at cost of over $400. Not worth it for that issue."

Anonymous, ID (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)

"The interior light has been out for about two years. I has not been repaired."

Anonymous, (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)
Tire pressure monitor

"false alarms, annoying beep and flashing light"

Anonymous, IA (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 4.7-L V8)

"After having a tuneup of engine, I kept getting a low tire pressure alarm. It would come in and off every few minutes. After changing sensor numerous times with no correction of problem, dealer spoke to engineers in headquarters. They finally determined it was a crimped wire in the spark plug compartment. Once the crimped wire was changed, the problem went away."

Frances H., LA (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

Display screen goes blank

"Screen goes blank and there is no controls available for anything including radio, gps, CD player, back up camera - nothing works"

Rick K., ON (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 Laramie 5.7-L V8)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"The phone pairing stopped working for an unknown reason. I haven't been able to figure out if the connecting device is internal to the radio system or is an external plug-in. Have not been to my dealer about this."

Herman P., OH (2010 Dodge Ram 1500 Laramie 5.7-L V8)
