This Ford Escape is quieter and more comfortable than the previous model we tested in 2001. IIHS crash-test results improved, as well. The Escape is agile, but had less tire grip than the 2001 version we tested. Because of this it had a relatively long braking distance and low maximum speed in our avoidance maneuver. Also, compared with many competing models, the Escape had slow acceleration times and so-so fuel economy.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"Best acceleration we found in a hybrid vehicle. It beat toyotas and other brands if hybrids."

C Y., IL (2007 Ford Escape)

"I regret not getting the six cylinder engine. From my discussions with other Escape owners they get a little better gas mileage and have better highway acceleration than our four."

WILLIAM D., NC (2007 Ford Escape)

"Handles well, even in rain"

Anonymous, CA (2007 Ford Escape)

"ease of getting in and out of the vehicle"

Anonymous, OR (2007 Ford Escape)

"It has about 110k on the odometer. It's never been in the shop except for the oil changes and seasonal tires. The engine, a six is very responsive, there is not a sign of rust. I believe it has had a set of front brakes."

I P., ON (2007 Ford Escape)

"Found the vehicle too light weight."

Anonymous, RI (2007 Ford Escape)

"The engine developed an oil leak in the rear seal. This is the most costly to repair as it is between the engine and transmission so we have decided to forgo the repair and replace the vehicle soon."

CRAIG H., MD (2007 Ford Escape)

"Easy on both counts"

Anonymous, AZ (2007 Ford Escape)

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"The noise is a problem. It's hard to hear when you are on the highway."

CATHERINE D., FL (2007 Ford Escape)

"Seats are firm and good for a long drive. The ride is also firm, but not jarring."

HOWARD W., NJ (2007 Ford Escape)

"air conditioning is very weak and slow to cool"

Anonymous, NY (2007 Ford Escape)

"If you are driving in stop-and-go traffic, you must run the a/c on "Max". The other setting will not keep the air cold when at a stop, but they will stay cold if the car is constantly moving (eg. highway travel)."

Anonymous, AZ (2007 Ford Escape)

"Cabin is very noisy at interstate speeds."

JEAN S., MN (2007 Ford Escape)

"seating is very comfortable. Drawbacks are no cruise control and it's on the noisy side."

Anonymous, CA (2007 Ford Escape)

"I like the electric seats. Makes it very convenient to adjust them up or down, back or ahead. The heating/ cooling has always managed to keep me warm enough and cool enough. There is a clackety-clack noise in the suspension when I drive on bumpy roads. If I knew exactly what it was I would try & get it fixed."

KEITH S., KS (2007 Ford Escape)

"Hybrid: air conditioner kicks down when in idle mode; road noise is annoying sometimes."

SHARYL W., CA (2007 Ford Escape)

"We also had an Escape 2006 with leather, heated seats as does our 2007. The Escape 2007 passenger seat does not have electronic controls and is difficult to adjust. It also doesn't have lumbar support. The driver seat is electronic and somewhat more comfortable, but if you drive longer than 30 minutes, my back gets sore and my sciatic nerve acts up."

JILL H., MI (2007 Ford Escape)

"It is very noisy. Wind noise is very noticeable. Tire wear is horrible on this model as well. If weren't for those two factors I would love this car."

ROLAND R., NC (2007 Ford Escape)

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"It's been incredibly reliable. Get in, turn the key. At 135,000 miles, I haven't even had to replace the headlamps!"

VALOR P., IL (2007 Ford Escape)

"Great gas mileage on a four wheel drive SUV"

SUSAN A., NV (2007 Ford Escape)

"I put a lot of miles on the vehicle making deliveries. It's been a very reliable "workhorse" and held up very well. The only costs are routine maintenance items (brakes, tires, oil changes, filters, etc.)"

Anonymous, IL (2007 Ford Escape)

"I feel I got what I paid for. A bigger-engine-vehicle would have cost me more. A better mileage vehicle (with same cargo space) would have had less power. If I had to do it over again I might have purchased a Toyota Camry, instead. I liked it for the smoother ride, better gas mileage, all around comfort. But, it didn't have as much cargo space which I was looking for at the time I bought this Ford Escape (in 2010)."

KEITH S., KS (2007 Ford Escape)

"Bought new for $15,800. Minimal repairs"

JOHN N., CT (2007 Ford Escape)

"It has been a great vehicle except for the transmission failure at 62,000 that cost me $5,000."

LINDA R., ID (2007 Ford Escape)

"While the car has lasted 10 years its milage has dropped from 30 to 37; it developed rust within 4 ears; it needs constant maintenance, Ford does not really stand behind the hybrid warranty. High repairs compared to my 18 year old Honda Accord."

WILLIAM M., DE (2007 Ford Escape)

"We bought the 2007 Escape in 2011 and it has needed had no major repairs, just normal maintenance. It is the best used car experience we have ever had (and we only ever buy used cars)."

KAREN H., ON (2007 Ford Escape)

"Good on the road, but transmission failure was very expensive to fix"

Anonymous, CA (2007 Ford Escape)

"When I purchased it, it was on the speedy side, but with the rise in gas prices since 2007, I have save a lot of $. I also have serious back problems, and the ability to just slide into this car rather than going up or down has been a life saver for me. It is also very comfortable to sit in for extended periods of time even with my back issues. Many people think my car is a new car because it has held up deteriorating paint etc."

JULIA I., OR (2007 Ford Escape)

"Ten years old, still runs great. 130,000 miles. No extra work on it other than regular maintenance. Great Car. I did however do the maintenance on a regular basis."

TIMOTHY A., ME (2007 Ford Escape)

"It just clicks along, not fancy, or with many bells and whistles, just a trust worthy vechicle."

Anonymous, AZ (2007 Ford Escape)

"The car is well made and holds up for years of service."

HOWARD W., NJ (2007 Ford Escape)

Percentage of owners who would definitely purchase that same vehicle again. Owner-satisfaction Ratings are determined by the percentage of those who answered "definitely yes" to the question asked by the Consumer Reports Annual Auto Survey "Considering all factors (price, performance, reliability, comfort, enjoyment, etc.), would you get this car if you had to do it all over again?". If we don’t have sufficient data, a similar model might be used to form the owner-satisfaction score.
