Ford's Expedition EL is a huge SUV capable of carrying nine passengers, their luggage and still tow a heavy trailer. For the most part, the EL succeeds. It has a roomy third-row seat, it handles reasonably well, and it accelerates strongly while towing our 5,000-pound test trailer. However, the Expedition's ride is stiff, it gets low fuel economy and the engine frequently sounds coarse and strained.

It bubbled in a number of different places and would have been expensive to have redone ( total paint of the tailgate) had it not been for a great dealer a got it covered under warranty. This had to be done two times--ridiculous!"

Dori W., IN (2012 Ford Expedition King Ranch 5.4-L V8)

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Calipers

"while driving locally, front right wheel started emitting smoke. Wheel was hot. Poured water on it to cool off once parked and had it towed to repair shop. they found nothing wrong and could not duplicate. they said brakes must have gotten stuck and smoked from friction. Only happened once."

Anonymous, NC (2012 Ford Expedition XL 5.4-L V8)

"Uneven break wear"

Anonymous, IN (2012 Ford Expedition XLT 5.4-L V8)
Normal routine brake wear

Anonymous, (2012 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer 5.4-L V8)

"As explained on the earlier comment about the refrigerant leak, discovered the back brakes were almost worn out while replacing the a/c line to the back unit."

Anonymous, (2012 Ford Expedition Limited 5.4-L V8)
Parking brake

"Apparently from the Ford blogs I read, Ford has a problem with the parking brake failing if not used regularly. This was the problem with the 2012 Expedition and was an approximate $1000 fix."

Frank R., WA (2012 Ford Expedition Limited 5.4-L V8)
Premature brake wear

Anonymous, NJ (2012 Ford Expedition XL 5.4-L V8)

"Brakes wore out at about 30000 miles. The car is very heavy and the brakes do not seem built for the car"

Anonymous, NC (2012 Ford Expedition XLT 5.4-L V8)
Rotors

"It started about a week before repair. It was pulling to the right and not stopping as good."

Anonymous, (2012 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer 5.4-L V8)

"Pulsating when braking"

Anonymous, NM (2012 Ford Expedition 5.4-L V8)

"Rotors warped prematurely and there is a wobble during breaking to indicate this"

Michael G., CO (2012 Ford Expedition XLT 5.4-L V8)

"We've had a lot of problems with warped rotors. We even tried changing the way we brake, pumping them to improve cooling. Nothing seems to help. It's a gigantic SUV built on the F-150 platform. If it can off-road in the wilderness, then I shouldn't have to baby the brakes when I'm driving in traffic."

Keil W., NE (2012 Ford Expedition XLT 5.4-L V8)

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"AC-compressor clutch "ate itself", i.e., completely disintegrated. I have not included the cost to repair this item because the vehicle is now in the dealership for the repair."

Anonymous, (2012 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer 5.4-L V8)

"Knew when I bought it that it had a coolant leak. A break in the line for the rear unit above the rear axle. When the line was replaced, there was enough extra pressure that the compressor went down. Neither of these were unexpected and were reflected in the lower purchase price. (And while taking the rear wheel off for access, found the back breaks were almost worn out; so replaced them also.)"

Anonymous, (2012 Ford Expedition Limited 5.4-L V8)

"Failed at 2 years of ownership. Out of warranty so had to pay myself. Ford dealership was not very responsive, so had independent shop perform replacement"

Anonymous, FL (2012 Ford Expedition XLT 5.4-L V8)
Fuel pump

"Problem gradually emerged as a stumble at start, progressing over a couple of months to the truck barely starting. Replacement cost was very high, because of the need to drain and remove the fuel tank from the truck."

Anonymous, AB (2012 Ford Expedition Limited 5.4-L V8)

Anonymous, KY (2012 Ford Expedition 5.4-L V8)

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"After 3-4 years we occasionally noticed condensation on the inside of the front windshield then noticed the headliner was damp on the driver side at the windshield pillar. The never opened sun roof had a water leak. We confirmed this by duct taping the entire area and sealing it off. We later confirmed there was a Ford Technical Service Bulletin out about it, but not a recall. We discovered the TSB AFTER the warranty had expired."

Phillip B., TX (2012 Ford Expedition Limited 5.4-L V8)
Seals and/or weather-stripping

"Both rear windows have weather seals that leak allowing water to accumulate in the door panels."

Danny A., TN (2012 Ford Expedition XLT 5.4-L V8)
Squeaks or rattles

"Sounds like something loose in head liner on both sides of sun roof rear track. Almost directly above front seat head rests. Possibly air duct or wiring for electronics in headliner. Pressing up on head liner causes noise to subside"

Anonymous, IA (2012 Ford Expedition Limited 5.4-L V8)

"passenger window rattles when driving with the window partially down"

James R., IL (2012 Ford Expedition Limited 5.4-L V8)

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

What Owners Say

Engine rebuild or replacement

"One of the Intake valves broke completely in half and dropped into the lower unit destroying the entire engine."

Danny A., TN (2012 Ford Expedition XLT 5.4-L V8)

"Timing chain tensioner gaskets failed, resulting in internal engine oil leak, in turn causing failure of camshaft phasers, and scoring of camshaft bearings. Because the cam bearings have no inserts, and head replacement is so costly, engine replacement was required. Dealer blamed problem on poor oil change intervals by previous owner. I blame Ford for poor TCT gasket quality, and now recommend owners of this engine replace TCTs as PM, on a 100,000 km interval."

Anonymous, AB (2012 Ford Expedition Limited 5.4-L V8)

"Feb 2018 exhaust value sheared off and was driven into the lower unit of the engine causing catastrophic engine damage. 138,000 miles at that time."

Danny A., TN (2012 Ford Expedition XLT 5.4-L V8)
Timing belt or chain

"My car died. Properly maintained every 5000 miles by ford dealership. I bought it new but it was a year old leftover. After 6 1/2 yrs It completely died. they had it 8 weeks. Finally found a defect in timing chain. Then the catalytic converter went. It cost $1900"

Anonymous, NJ (2012 Ford Expedition XL 5.4-L V8)
