Ford's Expedition EL is a huge SUV capable of carrying nine passengers, their luggage and still tow a heavy trailer. For the most part, the EL succeeds. It has a roomy third-row seat, it handles reasonably well, and it accelerates strongly while towing our 5,000-pound test trailer. However, the Expedition's ride is stiff, it gets low fuel economy and the engine frequently sounds coarse and strained.

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for about 329,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2020 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2013 Ford Expedition owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

Loose exterior trim or moldings

"I trim piece was loose do to a damaged clip"

Anonymous, TX (2013 Ford Expedition Limited 5.4-L V8)
Loose interior trim or moldings

"Rear panel piece above back hatch came loose during a heat wave. It had been glued in place at the factory after one of the latches failed. Disappointed in problems of trim falling off this vehicle. Have to keep a roll of duct tape handy"

Richard B., CA (2013 Ford Expedition Limited 5.4-L V8)

"the clips holding the molded bottom part of the driver;s seat that holds the seat movement control buttons broke off. the panel was functional but loose and somewhat floppy.cost almost $200 to repair. clips are just too cheaply made."

Anonymous, FL (2013 Ford Expedition XLT 5.4-L V8)

"Lower trim band of the drivers seat had poorly designed unyielding attachments that have broken"

Anonymous, FL (2013 Ford Expedition XLT 5.4-L V8)
Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"Paint is bubbling on tailgate near join with tailgate handle. Ford says there is no corrosion and that the paint is out of warranty. I think there is corrosion in that the bubbles seem to have a white powder under them that looks like aluminum oxide. The tailgate is aluminum"

Jay C., SC (2013 Ford Expedition XL 5.4-L V8)

"Paint bubbling on tailgate only. After doing internet research, this seems to be a known issue. Apparently, metal shavings contaminated the aluminum tailgate prior to painting, causing the metal shaving to rust under the paint."

Anonymous, NY (2013 Ford Expedition Limited 5.4-L V8)

"Paint on lift gate 'bubbling' in area near pull handle. This started several years ago and is spreading. Ford says it is a problem not covered, but looks like an adhesion problem that started very early on."

Anonymous, SC (2013 Ford Expedition XL 5.4-L V8)

"The tailgate and hood are made of aluminum. Aluminum has a history of corroding...not rusting... so the paint on the tailgate is bubbling at the handle due to corrosion."

Anonymous, (2013 Ford Expedition XLT 5.4-L V8)

"Paint on rear lift door is chalking, bubbling. And the area is spreading slowly across the liftgate. Since the paint warranty is so short and the corrosion warranty is so long, Ford of course says this is a paint problem and thus not warranty. However, the chalking sure looks like aluminum oxide to me, which is corrosion. But I apparently have not recourse as the service manager's word is final."

Anonymous, SC (2013 Ford Expedition XL 5.4-L V8)
Rust

"Small rust patched on rear Hath"

Anonymous, OK (2013 Ford Expedition Limited 5.4-L V8)

"Rust is another term for corrosion; since the corrosion is limited to the aluminum tailgate at this time, I simply wanted to indicate that corrosion was a problem, and "rust" was the only category available to choose"

Jay C., SC (2013 Ford Expedition XL 5.4-L V8)

"Tail gate with bubbling rust under tha paint near the license plate holder"

Anonymous, MI (2013 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer 5.4-L V8)

"Rear gate rust. Doors fill with water when it rains"

Kenneth H., NC (2013 Ford Expedition Limited 5.4-L V8)
