While the current Explorer is a vast improvement over its predecessor, it competed in a market with many more choices. Still, its steady ride and versatile, well-designed interior made for a well-rounded package. Its main drawbacks were an unrefined V6 engine and unimpressive performance on our off-road course. Stability control was standard in 2005.

It's the same paint that was on the hood when we received delivery from the dealership when it was new. The dealer wouldn't repair it because they said it was out of warranty. Also, the plastic panel just below the window on the tailgate cracked after a few years and wasn't covered under warranty. The same panel cracked on our 2003 Ford Explo"

Jay N., TX (2005 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0-L V6)

"Bubbling paint on aluminum hood in 2010...Ford wouldn’t fix it. I had it fixed. Body shop won’t touch ford paint problems because they will happen again. Ford lost out business. We had bought 3 within @0 years."

"3rd compressor install on this vehicle"

Anonymous, (2005 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer 4.5-L V8)

"I have 3rd row climate controls, so there are front and rear compressors. Premature failure on front compressor because service technicians failed to clean/replace the rear expansion valve and related orifice. Luckily, the second failure was covered under warranty from the previous $1,800 replacement. Also, replaced front and rear blend door actuators adding $385 additional repair cost. Special thanks to Meridian Tire & Brake (MS) for providing excellent service and fair pricing on diagnostics and repairs."

Anonymous, MS (2005 Ford Explorer XLT 4.5-L V8)

"A/C Compressor is horrible on this vehicle. Basically, to fix the A/C if it's anything more than a recharge, you have to remove most of the engine! Designers really messed up on making this vehicle repairable"

Howard H., FL (2005 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer 4.5-L V8)
Heater system

"Could not change air flow direction. Was getting only air blowing through the vents and couldn't select defroster. Mechanic said it would be expensive to fix, because would have to remove entire dash. Instead he fixed it so I can select between defrost and floor vents only (no mid vent). This is OK for now"

David J., CA (2005 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0-L V6)

"The heater works as far as producing hot air. The problem is it will only blow out of one set of vents. It will no longer blow out of the lower vents aimed toward your feet, or the defrost vents"

Sheri F., AL (2005 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0-L V6)

"NO heat...the door to allow heat to enter car would not open...blend door actuator"

Anonymous, NJ (2005 Ford Explorer 4.0-L V6)

"Continuing error message and locking up when turning into parking spot (to the right)"

Anonymous, TX (2005 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0-L V6)

"cracked sensor ring (looked like a gear) cracked/separated. Would cause ABS and traction control to disable / send warnings. Required new axle... $800"

Anonymous, CA (2005 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer 4.0-L V6)

"The left rear axle had a cracked toner ring (54-tooth ring) that resulted in it not staying stationary. So in higher speed turns, the ABS would kick off-line resulting in these dummy lights coming on: ABS; ADV TRACK; and 4x4 High. Purchased a new rear CV axle that comes with the toner ring already installed. Another option is to purchase the ring by itself, but results in the same amount of labor and you would need a special tool to swedge the new toner ring into place."

"Advance CD system was perk of buying this vehicle, but 5 disc system stopped working several years ago... locked up and Ford says whole unit has to be replaced - Not spending over 1500 for a vehicle that is only worth 5000"

Anonymous, AZ (2005 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0-L V6)
Fuel pump

"My check engine light came on. My gas gauge stopped working. I had it checked out, and it was because of something on my fuel pump (a sensor - I think) that had stopped working. They replaced the fuel pump and it fixed the problem. They said they could not just replace the sensor. Had to be the whole fuel pump."

Anonymous, ID (2005 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0-L V6)
Sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor)

"Electronic trottle control system failed, put car in "limp home mode""

Anonymous, VA (2005 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0-L V6)

"Ford needs to update their code system. Couldn't pass smog check for months while diagnostics wouldn't reset. Finally confirmed it was a GAS CAP issue - neighbor had stolen fuel, and left cap off. It set off code that several mechanics missed. A/C unit also is installed in a way that makes it impossible to repair a loose connection without THOUSANDS of dollars of cost to basically uninstall entire unit and reinstall. Then, a/c 7 heat units crack internally, setting sensors off AGAIN..."

Anonymous, CA (2005 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer 4.0-L V6)

"Sensor set off check engine light intermittently and eventually I replaced it. Only problem was the sensor itself."

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Coolers and lines

"The heat-activated valve that allows transmission fluid to flow to the transmission cooler stopped functioning, causing the transmission to overheat. I had the transmission shop remove it and turn it around so that it stays open all the time. This solved the problem. This transmission is the second replacement transmission (3rd total). The first two transmissions lasted about 100,000 miles. Since I understand failure of this valve is common with this transmission, I suspect the same problem caused the failure of the first two transmission (the original and first replacement). Current transmission has 115,000 miles in it. I have a device to monitor the OBD module real-time. Temperature now stays well below the overheat point at all times."

Anonymous, (2005 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0-L V6)
Gear selector or linkage

"4th and ive6th gears defect in transmission"

Anonymous, NC (2005 Ford Explorer 4.0-L V6)

Anonymous, NC (2005 Ford Explorer 4.0-L V6)

"Sealed system, no dip stick. Cooler blew, fluid drained out, couldn't check it. Dealer couldn't fill it right (no dipstick). Back 4 times. Still not right. At 78k miles, this is unacceptable. ABS & Traction ctrl & 4WD lamps on/blink sometimes"

"Transmission would slip every you put it into drive or reverse"

Anonymous, NY (2005 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer 4.0-L V6)
Transmission leaks

"Dealer did not properly install gasket after transmission service"

Michael S., NV (2005 Ford Explorer XLS 4.0-L V6)
Transmission sensor or solenoid

"I had the solenoid pack replaced on the sealed transmission one year ago. Over the next many months, the "check transmission" light continued to come on randomly. Issue described as potential electrical short somewhere in the system. As you know, electrical systems issues are next to impossible to diagnose and repair. Now the automatic transmission slips when shifting between the first and second gears. I don't blame the manufacturer. In the early years of maintenance, I blame Team Ford of Marietta (AutoNation Ford Marietta, Ga). Special thanks to ExpressCare Auto Center (Meridian, MS) for providing excellent and fair pricing on service diagnostics."
