This version of the Explorer switched to a car-based platform. It has a roomy and practical interior, a usable third-row seat and generous cargo capacity. It also has a steady and compliant ride, along with respectable fuel economy. Ultimately though, the Explorer still falls a bit short of the best in this competitive class.

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for about 329,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2020 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Anonymous, CA (2015 Ford Explorer Sport 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"Front 'pillar' at windshield has a plastic cover that came off while driving highway speed, then continued to come off after each attempted repair by Ford Dealership. Why Ford designed this critical item on the front of a car with velcro attachments to hold it in place is mind boggling. I took it to dealer to get fixed... they did a terrible job, then I started getting g phone calls to renew my warranty... I am sure they sold my phone number... not sure how to stop the nagging phone calls"

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"We also are part of the batch of Explorers that have paint chipping on the hood. We have discussed it with our Ford dealer as well as others and know that it is due to the type of paint and the type of aluminum the hood is made out of. This is annoying and we are talking with several different auto paint specialists to see what can be done. Other than that we are very happy with our Explorer and will likely get another one with it comes time to replace our Edge."

Anonymous, IN (2015 Ford Explorer XLT 3.5-L V6)

"A few spots on the front of hood where paint has bubbled up. Will need to be repainted."

Anonymous, KY (2015 Ford Explorer Base 3.5-L V6)

"Paint, bubbling, chipping and flaking on front edge of hood."

Randal R., PA (2015 Ford Explorer Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Paint is blistering on aluminum hood and the problem is expensive and widespread and impacts owners within a couple years of ownership and Ford won't do a G.D. Thing about it without a fight. I love my Explorer except for the hood problem. I've owned and loved Fords all my life but I'm so pissed about how they've ducked their responsibility to address this defect that I may look at other brands when it's time to replace this vehicle."

Anonymous, CT (2015 Ford Explorer Sport 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"bumpers are fading differently than body"

Joshua B., CT (2015 Ford Explorer XLT 3.5-L V6)

"paint started bubbling up on the front......per dealership, this vehicle was painted in the USA instead of China....EPA regulations prevent the US from using the appropriate paint that adheres best to the vehicle. Car was still under warranty so dealership fixed....concern is if other parts of the vehicle start to peel after it is out of warranty."

"Strong odor of exhaust fumes entering cabin area."

Michael K., MI (2015 Ford Explorer XLT 3.5-L V6)

"Exhaust fumes getting inside vehicle during hard acceleration, was a known problem and widely reported on. Took 5 trips (all under warranty) to the dealership to correct this. After inspecting the work and comparing to procedures to perform in a TSB from Ford found the technicians barely did any of the work and what was done was very poorly down. I made calls to Ford corporate, they sent an engineer down and the problem was fixed after they kept the car for close to two weeks. After this not only will I never get another Explorer, I will NEVER EVER buy anything from Ford the rest of my life. 100% incompetence all the way around, seems more and more companies have zero regard for the consumer anymore, it's all about the almighty dollar....so sad."

Other/unsure

"The warning light has something to do with wiring harness under rear passenger seat. It seems to come on after we have raised or lowered the rear passenger seat to allow kids into 3rd seat. It will stay on for a month or so and then go off."

Anonymous, TX (2015 Ford Explorer XLT 3.5-L V6)

"Air bag warning light came on indicating issue with passenger seat. Ford garage failed to investigate issue in first visit, failed to address issue in second visit, and still occurs today."

Anonymous, TX (2015 Ford Explorer Limited Unsure)

"Over a years timeframe, the airbag light would come on intermittently (but the frequency increased signifcantly over time). Researched online and found the problem is common in the 2015 Explorer. When the light comes on, the airbags in the vehicle are disabled (a safety issue). Took the vehicle to the dealer who explained Ford never issued a recall for this known safety issue. Problem was in the wiring harness under the middle seat which had to be replaced. Cost approx $900 to repair. This safety should have been repaired under a recall. At a minimum, Ford should have notified customers that their was a serious safety issue that needed to be addressed before operating the vehicle."

Anonymous, KS (2015 Ford Explorer XLT 3.5-L V6)

"The air bag warning light came on. Dealer said it disabled air bags and the electrical harness repair under rear seat would be $200. After a month warning light went off on its own. Never took it back to dealer."

In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"The electronics are not reliable - navigation cannot always comprehend what you are saying and the resolution takes the driver away from focus of driving! Therefore, use Google Maps on phone instead. Worse that this Is the back driver hatch which sometimes goes up if the key is in pocket without touching it - the alarm activation is also way too sensitive ,going off in pocket if you slightly brush against something."

Anonymous, NJ (2015 Ford Explorer XLT 3.5-L V6)
