    Reliability

    Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

    In-car Electronics

Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display.

    What Owners Say

    Apple CarPlay

"CarPlay is inconsistently connected with the truck. It often wont connect automatically and Manual connection fails ans well. Several times it does connect but the audio wont work without turning the truck off and then on again. Not sure if its a Ford or Apple problem which is probably why it doesnt ever get fixed"

Anonymous, OK (2023 Ford F-150 Lightning Platinum Electric)
    Display screen goes blank

"When starting the car, the instrument cluster which is all digital did not turn on. Everything else turned on. We were able to drive the car home, but not able to see how fast we were going. I went on the forums and a lot of people had the same problem within weeks of purchasing their lightning. The solution was to let it rest for about an hour and try again. It worked, and we have not had the problem since. That was the case with everyone else that had the same problem whose posts I read."

Anonymous A., WA (2023 Ford F-150 Lightning Pro Electric)

"When starting the car, the screen occasionally remains dark. Turning the car off, then on usually fixes the issue"

Anonymous A., MT (2023 Ford F-150 Lightning Platinum Electric)
    Other in-car electronics problem

"There is a software glitch where if the vehicle is preconditioned prior to starting the heated steering wheel wont remain on and you cannot turn it on again until the vehicle is driven, stopped, turned off and left to sit for a few minutes. There is no issue with the heated steering wheel if the vehicle is not preconditioned."

Anonymous, BC (2023 Ford F-150 Lightning XLT Electric)
    Over-the-air software update failed

"Over the air software updates failed due to failed battery monitoring hardware and software. Connectivity with companion app failed, and was unable to set battery charging rate and battery charge percentage."

Anonymous A., VA (2023 Ford F-150 Lightning XLT Electric)
    Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Phone paired just fine at first then there was a system update and phone could no longer make phone calls without tons of static. Phone worked on multiple other cars just not this one. Same with my husband's phone. Ford couldn't figure out what/how to fix it and they said it was probably a phone issue but the phones could make calls with no problem in other vehicles so it doesn't make sense that it's a phone issue."

Anonymous A., CA (2023 Ford F-150 Lightning XLT Electric)

    Electrical Accessories

Cruise control, clock, warning lights, body control module, keyless entry, wiper motor or washer, tire pressure monitor, interior or exterior lights, horn, gauges, 12V power plug, USB ports, alarm or security system, remote engine start, heated or cooled seats, heated steering wheel, headlights, automatic headlights, automatic wipers, wireless charging pad.

Anonymous, OH (2023 Ford F-150 Lightning Platinum Electric)

"The mechanism to roll the drivers window up stopped operating. It would roll down, but not up."

Anonymous A., GA (2023 Ford F-150 Lightning Lariat Electric)

    Noises/Leaks

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, seals and/or weather stripping, air and water leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Seals and/or weather-stripping

Anonymous, NC (2023 Ford F-150 Lightning Lariat Electric)

    Drive System

Driveshaft or axle, CV joint, differential, transfer case, four-wheel-drive/all-wheel-drive components, driveline vibration, electrical failure, traction control, electronic stability control.

    What Owners Say

    Other driveline problem

"System routinely gives a "Powertrain Malfunction" Reduced power warning; especially when cold. Cannot get dealer to fix it"

Anonymous, OH (2023 Ford F-150 Lightning Platinum Electric)

    EV Battery

Electric/hybrid battery pack failure, replacement or malfunction, or cooling.

    What Owners Say

Electric/hybrid battery pack malfunction (didn't need replacement)

"The truck stopped charging and registered as a fault in the app. I was unable to charge, so the truck spent 2 months at the dealership while they tried to sort it out. I was told they would replace the battery. In the end, they tried to fix it instead. I do not trust the battery after this experience, and I want a replacement. Ford will not allow it. Very disappointing."

    EV Charging

Won't charge at home; won't work with some public chargers; won't fully charge; charge connection; charge port door.

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for over 300,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2024 vehicles are holding up in 20 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, electric motor, EV charging, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical accessories. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.
