With a distinctive boxy shape combining the elements of an SUV, minivan and station wagon, the Flex is a very functional and versatile vehicle. The base 3.5-liter V6 engine was updated over the years in an attempt to improve acceleration and fuel economy, but it still falls short on refinement.

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2014 Ford Flex owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"Backup cam became intermittent about 2 years ago. Sometimes no camera image, just a notice to contact dealer. Sometimes image is upside down. Don't know hat that happens."

Anonymous, AZ (2014 Ford Flex Limited 3.5-L V6)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"Loses gps location. There is a TSB for it, and the dealership has not taken a look at it yet."

Brian G., VA (2014 Ford Flex Limited 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"Screen freezes. Screen blanks. Does not operate correctly"

Anonymous, VA (2014 Ford Flex SEL 3.5-L V6)

"Car loaded an update and erased the brand new sd navy card I had just purchased"

Anonymous, MI (2014 Ford Flex Limited 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"Vehicle icon on the screen would drift off the calculated route"

Paul M., IL (2014 Ford Flex Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Frequently shows me off route yet I've never left the route. Will not respond to voice commands or touch screen properly. POIs lacking and hard to search"

Brett R., FL (2014 Ford Flex Limited 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"The GPS no longer shows the car in the correct location - it seems to be off by about 100 to 200 feet, so the icon for the car shows it driving in the water, through houses, etc."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Ford Flex SEL 3.5-L V6)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Often does not pair phone, including Bluetooth music streaming, automatically. Hangs up at the start of calls or disconnects but leaves phone call running on phone. Once paired, the phone disconnects itself going down the road"

Brett R., FL (2014 Ford Flex Limited 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"This was easily fixed by the dealer"

Raymond R., KS (2014 Ford Flex SEL 3.5-L V6)
Radio

"Background noise"

Raymond R., KS (2014 Ford Flex SEL 3.5-L V6)

"Poor reception with AM stations"

Anonymous, MI (2014 Ford Flex SEL 3.5-L V6)
Rear entertainment system (e.g., DVD player, rear screen)

"Continual problems, especially with the remote controls not working. Being unable to switch the FM channel for the audio means that we are unable to watch the videos for long periods of time. Ford has been very unresponsive about this"

Patrick F., MI (2014 Ford Flex Limited 3.5-L V6 turbo)

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

Alarm or security system (excluding aftermarket systems)

Anonymous, MI (2014 Ford Flex SEL 3.5-L V6)
Keyless entry

"My remote stopped working. The dealer told me that the car's internal antenna for the keyless entry system had a corroded connector."

Anonymous, VA (2014 Ford Flex Limited 3.5-L V6)

"on a couple of occasions my key fob would not unlock door"

Jamie M., TX (2014 Ford Flex SE 3.5-L V6)
Remote engine starter

What Owners Say

4WD/AWD components

"It was a Recall which was completed by a dealership"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Ford Flex Limited 3.5-L V6 turbo)
CV joint

"CV Joint went out due to someone hitting the wheel of the vehicle pulling out of a driveway. There was no other major damage, it caused the joint to leak fluid and it caused the driving of the vehicle to fail two months later. The service center didn't catch the issue on the initial inspection."

Anonymous, WI (2014 Ford Flex Limited 3.5-L V6 turbo)
Differential

"Rear end differential needs to be replaced. Car is in shop again and parts on back order again"

Anonymous, FL (2014 Ford Flex Limited 3.5-L V6 turbo)
Driveline vibration

"The Ford dealer can't find what is causing a cold start vibration in the power train (drive line) when I first start out on a trip. The tires have been replaced two times with no improvement or reduction of the vibration. This issue is still being studied by the dealer at no cost to me other than time lost by me"

Noel B., IN (2014 Ford Flex Limited 3.5-L V6)
Driveshaft or axle

"Wheel bearing failure"

Anonymous, MA (2014 Ford Flex Limited 3.5-L V6)

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Calipers

"Seems to be a recurring problem with the rear brake calipers on the Ford Flex vehicles. The rear caliper pushed the inside pad into the rotor, destroying the pad and rotor. Also the design on the parking brake cable is a royal pain in the butt to work on."

Richard J., SC (2014 Ford Flex SEL 3.5-L V6)
Normal routine brake wear

"MY breaks never squeked like my past cars did to give me a warning of break pad wear. I started to hear a metal on metal sound and took it in. It was the pads and damaged rotors. Had a bigger bill. Yes, I should have known mileage wise it was time to get those checked. However, usually I hear a squeek and know to take it in."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Ford Flex Limited 3.5-L V6)
Parking brake

"THe parking break release mechanism completely froze. Had to have the entire assembly replaced."

Brian G., VA (2014 Ford Flex Limited 3.5-L V6 turbo)

What Owners Say

Seals and/or weather-stripping

"Sunroof is leaking water headliner wet and smells like mildew, dealer says it will cost over $2,000 to repair and is not a defect, referring to manufacture warranty which they have not covered. Seems like poor construction or defective materials"

Dennis W., CA (2014 Ford Flex SE 3.5-L V6)

"noisy squeaks."

Anonymous, MI (2014 Ford Flex SE 3.5-L V6)
Wind noise

"noise seems is mainly near the upper edge of the doors"

"I have not experienced the wind noise in the last 12 months"

Jamie M., TX (2014 Ford Flex SE 3.5-L V6)

Anonymous, TX (2014 Ford Flex Limited 3.5-L V6)

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Shocks or struts

"Never experienced an issue. Car repair tech said I needed new rear shocks. It was hundreds of dollars because the shocks are hard to reach to replace."

"Rear strut broken, car was difficult to drive, especially in curves or maneuvers."

Anonymous, PA (2014 Ford Flex SEL 3.5-L V6)

"Premature wear"

J M., NY (2014 Ford Flex SEL 3.5-L V6)

"Recall for a faulty fuel pickup"

Anonymous, BC (2014 Ford Flex Limited 3.5-L V6 turbo)
Sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor)

"Car hesitated and almost stopped on a local trip to a relative's house. When I tried to leave, the engine first started, then died and would not restart. I left it there until the next day, then had it towed to a repair facility. They identified the problem and replaced the sensor. I have had no problem since"

Anonymous, CO (2014 Ford Flex Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Fuel line sensor. Car stopped dead and had to be towed. Took 3 and a half weeks to replace part. Car ran 2 days and rear differential went out. Car not running and parts are on back order; should take several weeks"

Andrea N., WA (2014 Ford Flex SE 3.5-L V6)
Automatic climate control

"erratically shuts off, then back on after short to long period."

Anonymous, NM (2014 Ford Flex Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Actuator problem forcing continuous hot air"

Anonymous, MA (2014 Ford Flex SEL 3.5-L V6)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Rough shifting

"After about 40,000 miles, transmission began occasional hard shifts in lower gears. Ford dealer diagnosed and repaired under warranty."

Anonymous, TX (2014 Ford Flex)
Transmission computer

"Transmission had an issue where it would occasionally hesitate when moving from a dead stop."

Thomas C., FL (2014 Ford Flex SEL 3.5-L V6)
Transmission sensor or solenoid

"Initially, the transmission shut down completely. After being at the dealership for over 3 weeks, we got it back after some sensors were replaced and the transmission was reprogrammed. After repair, experienced rough shifting and hesitation when entering freeway traffic (downshift or passing gear). Returned for additional repair; at dealer another 2 weeks. Picked up and was still having the same issue. This time it was returned and Ford got involved and the dealer ended up reprogramming the entire transmission. It seems to have resolved the passing gear issue, but there is still some occasional rough shifting. This may simply be the transmission relearning my driving habits."

Lee D., GA (2014 Ford Flex Limited 3.5-L V6)

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

SEATS
Nov 07 2014
Improper suppression of the passenger airbag increases the risk of an injury to the seat occupant in the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front passenger airbag.
Summary:
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2014 Ford F-150 and Flex vehicles manufactured March 1, 2014, to May 31, 2014. The affected vehicles were manufactured with a reduced clearance between the seat frame and the seat track assembly. This can cause the Occupant Classification System (OCS) to inaccurately register passenger weight and improperly suppress the passenger front airbag when the passenger seat is occupied by an adult passenger. Thus, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."
What should you do:
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will widen the gap between the seat frame and seat track assembly and recalibrate the seat OCS, free of charge. The recall began November 25, 2014. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 14C10.
For more information:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

If the halfshaft and linkshaft become disengaged while driving, power will no longer be transmitted to the wheels, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash. Additionally, if the parking brake is not applied before exiting the vehicle, the vehicle may roll away despite the transmission being placed in 'Park', increasing the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
Summary:
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2012-2014 Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX vehicles manufactured September 2, 2010, to November 30, 2013; 2013-2014 Ford Taurus and Lincoln MKS vehicles manufactured August 25, 2011, to November 30, 2013; and 2013-2014 Ford Flex and Lincoln MKT vehicles manufactured September 12, 2011, to November 30, 2013. In the affected vehicles, the halfshaft retention circlip may not have been properly installed, and as a result, the halfshaft may move outward and disengage from the linkshaft while driving and without prior warning.
What should you do:
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicles to make sure that the halfshaft is properly retained. If it is not, dealers will replace the linkshaft and also replace the halfshaft if it shows evidence of spline damage, free of charge. The recall began on August 4, 2014. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S10.
