The Focus manages to be both logical in its design as well as fun to drive. This European-developed car offers ride comfort and agility on par with respectable sport sedans. Access, rear seat room and trunk space belie the fact that this is a small sedan. Interior quality and pronounced road noise mar this otherwise capable package though.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

What Owners Say

"This is an SVT and one of the best cars I've owned. Period. The drivetrain is excellent"

Anonymous, CA (2004 Ford Focus)

"Older car. A.C. will cost more to repair than car is worth"

Anonymous, FL (2004 Ford Focus)

"Good acceleration"

Anonymous, MT (2004 Ford Focus)

"See previous response."

James N., CA (2004 Ford Focus)

"Good stick shift."

Karen S., ID (2004 Ford Focus)

"This car wants to be a sports car. Plenty of accelleration and power for all of our driving. Fun to drive."

JAMES N., CA (2004 Ford Focus)

"No varying in acceleration when the a/c is turned on. Normal acceleration is terrific and the steering/suspension is still very responsive and steady."

PEGGY R., IL (2004 Ford Focus)

"Excellent handling and fun to drive. Ride a little on the firm side"

CURTIS B., CA (2004 Ford Focus)

"Surprisingly good handling, tight cornering, responsive. Acceleration is also better than expected for this basic sedan. Quick from full stop, and when passing."

Anonymous, CA (2004 Ford Focus)

"Never an issue. Always adequate or adequate plus"

BOB J., CA (2004 Ford Focus)

"Not quite enough legroom for the driver."

PAUL L., FL (2004 Ford Focus)

"DRIVES"

Anonymous, TX (2004 Ford Focus)

"good handling"

Anonymous, FL (2004 Ford Focus)

"This is the SVT model. It "punches well above its weight (and cost)" The suspension is 10/10, the engine is 10/10. Great car for not a lot of money. There are some cheap interior bits but that's fine considering the rest of the car. It's only too bad Ford screwed up the SVT program."

Anonymous, CA (2004 Ford Focus)

"Why Ford screwed up the SVT program is a mystery. My Focus SVT is an awesome car"

Anonymous, CA (2004 Ford Focus)

"Handling is very impressive and responsive."

Anonymous, NY (2004 Ford Focus)

"Smooth and quick acceleration"

Anonymous, CA (2004 Ford Focus)

"My personal "hot rod""

Anonymous, MT (2004 Ford Focus)

"With a standard transmission, this car is a blast to drive. After beefing up the shocks and struts, it handles extremely well with great acceleration (except out of 1st gear...). Its too bad this model is no longer available and thats why I keep it. I love driving it."

Anonymous, DE (2004 Ford Focus)

"Handles well even as it ages. Acceleration still great."

Sue G., MI (2004 Ford Focus)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Relatively noisy. Seats are starting to break down."

Anonymous, MT (2004 Ford Focus)

"Bucket seats are firm but comfortable. Road noise is a bit louder than I would like, but ,as my sister said "This car thinks its a sports car." Acceleration, power and handling are all pluses. Folding the backseat is a pain and the seat does not form a level storage area extension."

James N., CA (2004 Ford Focus)

"niosy interior"

Anonymous, MT (2004 Ford Focus)

"Brake squeals although there is plenty of padding. High speed wind noise."

JAMES N., CA (2004 Ford Focus)

"Upgraded seats in the SVT model are very comfortable compared to my mother's non-SVT Focus. They almost hug you. Ride is very stiff, but that is what we bought the SVT model for. Seats keep you comfortably in place even in aggressive cornering. Sound is a little loud, but it does not have the stock exhaust system, so may be specific to this car. Rear seats are comfortable, and not difficult to access, for such a small car."

James A., MN (2004 Ford Focus)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"It is 16 years old and still runs well. It has never not started or stranded me in winter, no matter how cold it was. I have always taken it in for its regular maintenance. It has the original engine and has always passed its emission tests."

Anonymous, ON (2004 Ford Focus)

"Just very lucky to find proverbial "driven by little old lady" car with 14K miles in 2009, and in good condition. Has been reliable, except when add-on remote start system developed short, and started draining battery, which stranded wife - pulled fuse to disable it, and have left it that way. Much nicer to drive than the Escape with regard to visibility/location awareness around the vehicle, and generally good handling with adequate power."

Anonymous, NC (2004 Ford Focus)

"GREAT value for money spent; reliability is tops!"

Anonymous, CT (2004 Ford Focus)

"It's just a nice car. Handles well with good acceleration. Because it's a station wagon, it fits lots of stuff easily."

Anonymous, MD (2004 Ford Focus)

"Reliable, good gas mileage, basic"

Anonymous, CA (2004 Ford Focus)

"good value - never had an issue"

PALOMA H., TX (2004 Ford Focus)

"Approximately 200,000 kilometers on the vehicle. Original battery and rotors replaced in the past year. Original spark plugs replaced last year. The original transmission replaced 3 years ago. I burned it out by getting stuck in deep snow 3 or more times and rocking back and forth. some rust on the bottom side panels. I can get approximately 300 km. (city driving) on a gas tank of 41 liters."

Anonymous, AB (2004 Ford Focus)

"This was a good buy. My dealer operates with invoice plus $100 so we felt this was a good deal. The car has had very little go bad. Still has original brakes."

Anonymous, PA (2004 Ford Focus)

"Car has cost very little to own. Repairs have been minimal. Still fun to drive"

Sue G., MI (2004 Ford Focus)
