A freshening didn't hide the fact this was a nine-year-old design. Once among our top-rated small cars, this version rated only midpack. It retained some of its agile handling, plus the composed ride and roomy interior. But fit and finish and noise remained weak points. Further, there was no longer a telescoping steering wheel, or assist handles to aid access. Braking distances got longer.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

"Very good acceleration for a 4 cyl engine"

Anonymous, GA (2008 Ford Focus)

"Excellent get-up-and-go or a 4 cylinder and the ability to navigate in heavy city driving ."

Robert H., MS (2008 Ford Focus)

"I can pass other drivers on mountains. Steering is easy to control."

Anonymous, WV (2008 Ford Focus)

"Handling is good, sluggish with acceleration on highway for passing or merging"

Anonymous, MA (2008 Ford Focus)

"Very solid driving and handling"

Anonymous, PA (2008 Ford Focus)

"Nimble and easy to drive."

Lyle B., VA (2008 Ford Focus)

"Handling is great. Acceleration, not so much."

T M., NY (2008 Ford Focus)

"The acceleration is wonderful. It's kind of fun to see the other drivers faces when I merge onto the freeway (as though they were very surprised that the car could move so quickly)."

Anonymous, CA (2008 Ford Focus)

"The vehicle just keeps going with no engine or transmission problems after 8 years. It is nimble in traffic and handles very well and has excellent fuel mileage - 33 mpg."

RANDY Y., MI (2008 Ford Focus)

"It continues to operate with little need for repairs. My usage is mainly for work and occasionally recreation. If I had repeated long trips I would search for a new care."

TERRY G., OH (2008 Ford Focus)

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Leather, bucket seats very comfortable, although the car does become hotter in the summer than does a car with lighter, cloth seats. Seat height and steering-wheel placement adjust. The Focus is more comfortable in front seats than in back, where there is little leg room for adults."

Anonymous, WV (2008 Ford Focus)

"Ride can be not smooth, road noise, winds blow it around"

Gary C., MN (2008 Ford Focus)

"The car has become somewhat noisier over the years. Not radically bad, but I now find I need to turn the radio up to overcome engine and suspension noise."

Richard B., MD (2008 Ford Focus)

"seats not very confortable"

Anonymous, WA (2008 Ford Focus)

"Seats are not power and only adjust forward or back, do not go up or down. Lumbar support is good. Ride can be noisy on the highway at higher speeds"

Anonymous, MA (2008 Ford Focus)

"The car is somewhat noisy."

Kenyon S., MN (2008 Ford Focus)

"The outside noise when driving on the freeway is awful. So loud that one has to put the radio volume up high."

Anonymous, CA (2008 Ford Focus)

"Much easier to get in and out of car than Toyota Corolla or Saturn sedan. Just need more room for my rollator in back seat. Can only fit one skinny person in back seat with rollator. Would like car to be bigger, so I could fit more people in back seat. My only real complaint is with the seatbelt, which constantly pulls up to my neck. I'm 5'2" and it seems like the seatbelt was made for a much taller person. I've found a clip from AAA to keep the seatbelt lower, but it's a flimsy piece of plastic that does not work that well."

Roslyn K., PA (2008 Ford Focus)

"Very comfortable and quiet."

Lyle B., VA (2008 Ford Focus)

"Comfortable seat height and tall door opening for 6'1" driver. Lots of road noise until I replaced Ford's Hankook tires with Goodyears."

THOMAS S., MD (2008 Ford Focus)

"Power driver's seat is key for me 'cause I'm short. However, the "stuffing" in the seat is compressing as it ages. As a result, I'm not as high up as I'd like to be. One of the problems of aging, LOL!"

GEORGIANN E., PA (2008 Ford Focus)

"Bad, seat not comfortable for lower back. Fixed with adding a cushion."

Anonymous, NJ (2008 Ford Focus)

"small car = noisy ride"

JOHN E., ON (2008 Ford Focus)

"Acceleration is slow and engine raised in trying to enter expressway for instance. Comfort seats are not comfortable and the ability to raise the seat to see over the hood is not stable slowly returning to the original setting. Road noise is very audible to the point where it is difficult to hear in high traffic situations."

TERRY G., OH (2008 Ford Focus)

"The ride is quite choppy, and the car has a nasty tendency to lurch sideways when going over rough pavement. I am told this is because of the (moderately) low-profile tires. This does not inspire confidence in the safety of the car."

DAVID F., MI (2008 Ford Focus)

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"Very few mechanical break-downs requiring part replacements needed and extremely great gas mileage even with the high mileage of the vehicle"

Robert H., MS (2008 Ford Focus)

"A very reliable car that handles very well. Very little maintenance required other than changing the oil and rotating the tires. Total maintenance cost including recently purchased tires has been less than $2000."

Anonymous, MI (2008 Ford Focus)

"Car has held up very well, handles great with good gas mileage! Other than normal wear and tear, issues have been few and far between. I am considering keeping this car as a daily driver and getting a fun car for occasional use."

Roland S., CT (2008 Ford Focus)

"A great machine for the price paid. It still runs like new.."

Paul Y., WA (2008 Ford Focus)

"Great value for the money. Drove my Focus over a quarter million miles in 10 years!"

T M., NY (2008 Ford Focus)

"This car cost $2K less than the similar Japanese car. So far it has run without any issues."

Kenyon S., MN (2008 Ford Focus)

"This is a car that handles well and has been very inexpensive to operate."

Anonymous, MI (2008 Ford Focus)

"a great dependable car that I have had to put very little money into. Oil changes-tires and battery, window wiper blades. that is in 10 years of ownership. Great value for the original price of the car."

Marian H., NV (2008 Ford Focus)

"This car now has 169,000 miles on it, and I've only replaced two front end bushings, front brakes, spark plugs, tires and filters. I've never had a car with such reliability."

RICHARD B., MD (2008 Ford Focus)

"It's a two door coupe. Wife loves it--looks, handling. Peppy engine."

Anonymous, FL (2008 Ford Focus)

"I feel that I paid too high a price considering the car did not have speed control which I was unaware of when I paid for the car. I assumed speed control would be included. My mistake."

Anonymous, ON (2008 Ford Focus)

"Solid, dependable car"

JAMES P., GA (2008 Ford Focus)

"Have driven this car over 100000 miles and had no major problems"

JAMES C., RI (2008 Ford Focus)

"This car was purchased at a nominal price from my mom when she went into a nursing home, so it was a great value. Also, it is easy to get in and out of for older people."

Anonymous, IA (2008 Ford Focus)

"This focus is a very simple manual transmission vehicle. We have 113,000 miles and done nothing but general maintenance. Have also exceeded 50 mpg highway miles."

Anonymous, KS (2008 Ford Focus)

"Great car, very reliable. It has stayed "Healthy". Only issue I have worried about is the lack of a spare tire. It has the air pump. Did not know car did not have spare tire for 2 years after purchase. Dealer did not tell, I did not look. Oh boy."

FRANK Z., OH (2008 Ford Focus)

"I have not had many problems with the car."

Anonymous, MI (2008 Ford Focus)

"The Ford Focus is a great value considering how inexpensive it was."

JODY W., MA (2008 Ford Focus)

"Minimal maintenance and affordable repairs so long as you don't take your vehicle to a dealer. Worth getting this vehicle again."

RANDY Y., MI (2008 Ford Focus)

"drives and handles well"

Anonymous, FL (2008 Ford Focus)
