A freshening didn't hide the fact this was a nine-year-old design. Once our top-rated small car, this version rated only midpack. It retained some of its agile handling, plus the composed ride and roomy interior. But fit and finish and noise remained weak points. Further, there was no longer a telescoping steering wheel, or assist handles to aid access. Braking distances got longer.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

What Owners Say

"The focus had alot of power--until the transmission started with problems. It did not pick up anymore the way it did---hesitated when asking for more power---and the engine would roar--when trying to shift from one gear to a higher one. Always did handle beautifully---such a shame for a good looking car when this clutch thing took over."

Anonymous, PA (2010 Ford Focus)

"Not as peppy (as quick at acceleration) as I would expect for a small, light car"

GARY D., BC (2010 Ford Focus)

"Acceleration, handling, seat comfort, low repair cost. Great mpg, but I want better for city driving."

Anonymous, CA (2010 Ford Focus)

"no problems with handling and acceleration plenty of power"

DONNIS C., MD (2010 Ford Focus)

"The traction control and ABS are excellent features. I drove in a torrential downpour and only realized I was hydroplaning due to the engine braking slowing down via the controls. The car never left the straight line it was tracking. I insisted on buying the second Focus for my daughter due to these excellent safety features."

CLAY M., MO (2010 Ford Focus)

"There has always been a vibration and lots of road noise, which is very annoying. Replaced all three motor mounts and still noise and vibration."

NORMA G., FL (2010 Ford Focus)

"Both are good for the stsndard of car."

PETER M., NS (2010 Ford Focus)

"stady and acceleration ver good"

Anonymous, IN (2010 Ford Focus)

"turn radius and window view are issues for me. blind spots."

DONALD K., VA (2010 Ford Focus)

"Great acceleration for a small engine"

Anonymous, VA (2010 Ford Focus)

"I chose the manual transmission on purchase over the automatic even tho the rated mileage is very, very similar. I am happy that I did. I found the automatic when I test drove the car in '10 to be remarkably smooth and shift points to be very comfortable for me but nonetheless there were only two set positions offered, ie I could not set the transmission to low gear. I find that very useful in managing up and down hill driving and stop and go on the freeway. My manual offers me much more versatility that way."

Verreau J., MI (2010 Ford Focus)

"Has excellent acceleration and power for hills and passing"

Anonymous, PA (2010 Ford Focus)

"I like the nice stiff steering - very responsive. Acceleration is good."

Anonymous, MI (2010 Ford Focus)

"No rear seat leg room for adults"

Anonymous, WA (2010 Ford Focus)

"The seat controls are simple to use----however---I cannot adjust the seat close enough to the steering wheel to feel really comfortable driving. Seats are very comfortable--especially on long trips."

Anonymous, PA (2010 Ford Focus)

"The car still rides smoothly (seats and driving) compared to the models that followed. Our best auto ever for value etc. Our cars of past include 2001 MSTG GT Bullet, CHVY Slvrdo 1500, Eclisp Sydr GT."

"entrance in to, seating"

Anonymous, IN (2010 Ford Focus)

"The air conditioner started not working since last year, and I just found out that there is a leak, and it will cost me about $1800 to fix it. My focus is only 6 year old, I think the air conditioner should last a bit longer. I am not going to fix it, too expensive!"

Anonymous, WA (2010 Ford Focus)

"back seat passengers can get trapped ankles when front seats are full back."

Anonymous, BC (2010 Ford Focus)

"Most comfortable seats we've ever had, and they are not power seats."

"Seats are good but interior is noisy on some road surfaces and climate controls are clumsy."

PETER M., NS (2010 Ford Focus)

"It's a little noisy inside as well as a bit of a bumpy ride - had my shocks checked & they're ok. Overall great to drive- I think it's not as comfortable to be a passenger"

LESLEE D., ID (2010 Ford Focus)

"the ride is only slightly noisy. but the seats are VERY comfortable. Ride and handling are superb."

Anonymous, MI (2010 Ford Focus)

"Seats too small and not holding up"

Dennis S., VA (2010 Ford Focus)

"I rent a number of new cars the same basic size as the Focus (Sentra, Elantra, Soul, etc) for work trips around Florida—the old Focus beats them all for seat comfort. The car has gotten much noisier as it has aged—the engine is rough. Ride is still very good. On all original parts."

J M., FL (2010 Ford Focus)

"The engine is surprisingly loud, which contributes to the overall road noise while driving."

Gary D., BC (2010 Ford Focus)

"The seats are great compared to models before and after."

Anonymous, CA (2010 Ford Focus)

"Ride noise is higher than desired. Car has developed numerous rattles and vibration noises."

Wendy B., FL (2010 Ford Focus)

"It is actually a 2007 Ford Focus. At present it is an uncomfortable, noisy rattle trap. BUT the body has held together after standing outside for 11 years with only a tree for protection AND it always starts."

Jonathan G., NY (2010 Ford Focus)

"Seats are very comfortable. The driving position is very ergonomically friendly."

Anonymous, MD (2010 Ford Focus)

"most important is height of seats and ease of getting in and out of car."

Anonymous, WA (2010 Ford Focus)

Anonymous, WA (2010 Ford Focus)

"Seats are comfortable; like bucket seats in front; ride is fairly smooth"

Michael M., CT (2010 Ford Focus)

"For a small car the seats and ride are very good, and noise is acceptable. I very much like the 2010 Focus and it is very reliable, but I wouldn't buy a new one. I have driven the restyled Focus and do not like the features nor the current reliability."

Anonymous, VA (2010 Ford Focus)

"Very comfortable to drive"

J M., FL (2010 Ford Focus)

"Haven't had any major repairs for this car. Typical maintenance items. Except - the CD player just stopped ejecting my CDs sometimes. Don't trust to use it so purchased a standalone CD player to use instead."

Leslee D., ID (2010 Ford Focus)

"It's a simple, inexpensive compact car. But, runs as good today as it did 8 years ago. Maintenance has been minimal. The only downside has been tires. They seem to wear out or damage more easily than any other car I've owned."

David D., MD (2010 Ford Focus)

"I feel the Focus is a well built vehicle. When new, I got 36 mpg average when I did a lot of freeway driving. It has been a reliable car though this summer the major components of the air conditioning system went bad. Not sure I want to spend the $1100 to fix it. Other than that maintenance has been as expected."
