Sporty handling, relatively low noise, and a well-done interior make the Focus feel more like a small sports sedan than a humdrum compact. Though not blazingly fast, the Focus does get good fuel economy. Several flaws keep it from being one of our top-rated small cars, though. The most irksome of those is the PowerShift automatic transmission, which stumbles at low speeds.

What Owners Say

Clutch adjustment

"Cluthch replacement and clutch adjustment have been identified as problems in this model"

Anonymous, IL (2012 Ford Focus SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"When starting out from a stand still, the car shudders because the clutch is not engaging properly. This happens regardless of how slowly or quickly I begin to accelerate"

Anonymous, IN (2012 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Recalls on this model tell all you need to know"

Andrew J., ME (2012 Ford Focus SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Had the clutch (or torque I don't remember) replace/recalibrate/reset or reprogram. I was told they replace one part (sorry I do not remember if it was the clutch or something else and I don't have the service records with me) under warranty but now at 100,000km it doing the same jerking effect which seems to be occurring more at low speed in the city"

Anonymous, NB (2012 Ford Focus Titanium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Timing of shifting. Symptom was a slight shudder"

Frank R., NY (2012 Ford Focus SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The problems were corrected"

Paul B., NJ (2012 Ford Focus SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"the car would shudder om take off"

Curtis S., IL (2012 Ford Focus SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"I've had my Focus back to the dealer three times now to have the clutch/transmission reprogrammed. It is going bad again although it has been only a few short weeks since it was adjusted last. I'm not very happy"

Gail B., CT (2012 Ford Focus SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"It was a recall. Caused the transmission to drift back on hills"

Brian P., IN (2012 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"See previous comments"

Anonymous, MA (2012 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"I was having difficulty with lurching especially when first taking off and occasionally when the gears shifted. I reported, took the car in for adjustment and have had no additional problems"

P H., OH (2012 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"something was adjusted, - reprogrammed..? it was OK for about 3 days then went back to fluttering and now getting less gas MPG"

Anonymous, FL (2012 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Vehicle hesitates at times due to the electric clutch"

Michael S., ME (2012 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"so called computer assisted manual transmission, effectively automatic from the driver's perspective. Has tended to lug, shift sluggishly, but is better after computer adjustment"

Anonymous, MN (2012 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"All three problems were related to the same thing, leaking seals that dripped on the clutch and caused it to slip. After taking to thing apart and drying off the plate and replacing the seals, it ok now"

Thomas F., WI (2012 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"the dealer adjusted it a few times and did some computer updating. Feels better that returns to same"

Robyn L., CA (2012 Ford Focus SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Recall on low speed shifting chatter"

Anonymous, ON (2012 Ford Focus 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Gear selector or linkage

"Not sure if this is the correct category. On four different occasions the gear lever has stuck in park and would not go into drive or reverse. All four events happened in heavy traffic or in construction zones when I was required to stop"

Anonymous, ID (2012 Ford Focus SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Hydraulics (clutch master or slave cylinder)

"transmission problems persisted for a year before Ford found a solution. Also SYNC sucks voice recognition is poor. it requires too many steps to get to a solution or answer"

V N., NJ (2012 Ford Focus SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Rough shifting

"Transmission made a noise, and then a notification came up saying there was an issue with the transmission. Had to have it towed to a dealer."

Anonymous, MO (2012 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Horrible transmission despite being pulled four times and the seals and clutch being replaced makes strange rattling noises, shifts roughly, hesitates between shifts, etc."

Rand M., GA (2012 Ford Focus SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Despite being a known problem Ford has dragged there feet on coming up with a total fix. It’s too bad that Ford acted this way because the car would be fantastic without the transmission and fuel line issue. Either of which could have been deadly."

Anonymous, OH (2012 Ford Focus SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Typical problems with the focus transmission"

Anonymous, CA (2012 Ford Focus SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"clutch chatter problems in the automated manual transmission used in this Focus"

Harry S., MD (2012 Ford Focus Titanium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"My automatic Focus would be noticeably jerky in first gear. A trip to my dealer fixed the problem with a software update."

William O., VA (2012 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Prior to repair, which has now happened 3 times, the car shudders from a stopped position and when shifting gears. This is a known problem with this year-make. A class-action lawsuit againt Ford is in progress for the problem. It's a transmission design flaw that can only be temporarily fixed, so it re-occurs after about a year/15-20000 Km."

Anonymous, ON (2012 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"when shifting from 1st to 2nd there was sometimes a stutter during the shift. It was like the transmission went back and forth between the two gears. Took it to dealer and under warranty it was repaired. However the stutter has returned and will need to take it back to the dealer under warranty."

Anonymous, MO (2012 Ford Focus SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"acts like the clutch shifting in the low gears can't complete the shift"

Anonymous, NY (2012 Ford Focus SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"This car still shifts roughly in the low gears despite repairs."

James R., MI (2012 Ford Focus 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Clutch software adjustment made twice prior to Ford admitting a problem existed. Since admission of clutch shifting problems on this auto transmission Focus the clutch has been replace 3 times"

Michael O., WI (2012 Ford Focus)

"Whoever designed the whole transmission system should be fired from Ford. They can't fix it or adjust it to my satisfaction. It continues to have trouble figuring out when to shift an while t does the motor runs very fast."

T F., WI (2012 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The transition from first to second gear often has a shudder"

Anonymous, IN (2012 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"when at complete stop you excellerate the car shutters due to the clutches (2) not engaging."

Paul B., CA (2012 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Vibration issues from stopped position. Occurs infrequently but when it does it is worrying."

Thomas O., ON (2012 Ford Focus SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The vehicle shutters so much from every start it's uncomfortable and annoying. I have taken it in 3 different times to be told this is how the car is supposed to operate. This is not true! I couldn't join the class action lawsuit because I didn't have enough service record documentation nor did I have any major work done on the transmission. Nothing was done with it because I was tired of taking it in and being told the same thing every time I complained about the problem."

Robert W., KY (2012 Ford Focus SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"when starting from being zero, there is often a shuddering of the transmission"

Anonymous, ON (2012 Ford Focus SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Third warranty repair for the same problem over the last 3-4 years. I've been informed that this is now part of a class action suit"

Anonymous, TX (2012 Ford Focus Titanium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"chronic clutch pack chattering problem in automatic transmission--clutch pack has been replaced three times"

H S., MD (2012 Ford Focus Titanium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Dealer replaced clutch assembly. Had caused rough shifting and idling. Replacement was covered under warranty."

Anonymous, CA (2012 Ford Focus Titanium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"seemed to be part of the same problem, not shifting smoothly or not at all."

Anonymous, TX (2012 Ford Focus 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Tis is one of the bad Focus trans. This IS how it shifts with bucking, slipping, slow start, poor gear changes, clunking. It runs this way until something breaks and then Ford fixes it. Ridiculous"

Ronna H., SC (2012 Ford Focus 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Clutch slippage due to design flaw admitted by Ford"

Kenneth K., GA (2012 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The transmission will jutter after the car has either been turned on and off frequently during shopping trips or after starting it again following a long drive at highway speeds."

Donald H., IN (2012 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Whining noise from the transmission at speeds under 45mph"

"Shifting can often be loud and extremely jarring, particularly when acceleration up steep hills at slow speeds"

Anonymous, PA (2012 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The new Focus transmission is very inconsistent in it's shifting: sometimes it's relatively smooth, but usually it jerks, hesitates, and occasionally feels like it's going to stall-out (though it never actually has). This has made for emergency situations and narrowly avoided accidents. The engine will also sometimes 'rev' when I am trying to slow down"

Patricia M., PA (2012 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Occasionally happens but not steadily"

Anonymous, ON (2012 Ford Focus Titanium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, IA (2012 Ford Focus SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Shifting into 2nd gear can be rough, especially when accompanied by the shuddering from the transmission slippage"

Anonymous, CA (2012 Ford Focus SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The defect in the transmission causes the shifting to become really rough, sometimes nonexistent (car won't move) until the automatic clutch is replaced. My real complaint is that they keep fixing the problem but do not fix the defect that leads to the problem"

Gary R., FL (2012 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"As is well known, never take off in a hurry or in front of traffic. Major jerking"

Anonymous, KY (2012 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, TX (2012 Ford Focus SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The transmission would jerk upon accelleration"

Ray J., FL (2012 Ford Focus SE SFE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"I think Ford knows that this has been an issue. They made some adjustment that was a recall, but it didn't totally fix the issue. We started using a higher octane gas and that seems to have helped the issue"

Ronna H., SC (2012 Ford Focus 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"This ford has had an issue with rough shifting since I purchased it. At first they said it was just the way the car worked. Then it came out with a recall. I had it repaired but it still has intermittent rough shifting"

Anonymous, KS (2012 Ford Focus SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"It has had continual problems with rough shifting. Began a few weeks after I had it and was told that's just how it shifts. Kept getting worse. I've had the clutch replaced at least 2 times. I've had other warranty work 1-2 times a year for the same kind of thing. Clutch and transmission recalls"

"The 2012 Focus models had an inherent transmission issue, causing a shaking when accelerating from a stop, which affected all three 2012 Focuses I am aware of personally. It's my understanding this was a general problem with the transmission design. There were multiple attempts by Ford, over the years, to address this with firmware updates and hardware recalls, but I believe it has finally been fixed with the partial rebuild we received from Ford last August (2018). Since that rebuild, we have not had any more issues."

"Ford has been having a slipping problem with the Dual Clutch on the 2012 Focus and has not yet found a fix to my knowledge. I have had the clutches replace 2 times and it has just started to show signs of slipping again. Ford has stepped up and covered the cost of the replacement both times, but a permanent fix would be the better path."

Steve M., ON (2012 Ford Focus Titanium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"This is a manual automatic transmission. Original equipment clutches were cleaned once to resolve slipping due to an internal leak. In 2016 clutches were replaced with a new design, but clutches still slip and chatter when car is under load (with passengers, especially when accelerating hard). I think the clutch system is poorly designed, probably undersized for the vehicle. Ford extended the warranty to 75,000, but the dealer recently stonewalled our complaint, telling us that the transmission is supposed to behave more like a manual transmission. I would consider a manual transmission that behaves this way faulty."

What Owners Say

Clutch replacement

"This was a known issue with many of this model that probably should have resulted in a recall. We didn't know at the time we bought it, and not all Focus double-clutches have the failure. To Ford's (or the dealer that did the job) credit, they didn't charge us for the bulk of the repair, which won us back a bit, and we've taken the car to that dealer for other service since then. Caveat: we bought an after market warranty when we bought the car (used), but it didn't cover the particular double-clutch since they said it was a dry clutch, so be sure that your warranty actually covers it if you buy one of these. Apart from that issue, we've been happy with the car."

David H., NY (2012 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"It was not operating properly, and was hesitant to shift, so I got it replaced under warranty."

Anonymous, MN (2012 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"At times the transmission shifted hard. It was not bad but since I had it in for an oil change and it was just under 100K miles, it was still under warranty. I asked them to look at it and they replaced the clutch. It's the second clutch to be replaced."

Barry W., WI (2012 Ford Focus SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The clutch failed and was replaced along with clutch levers. This was the third time the clutch was replaced under warranty. I had to pay for replace of clutch levers."

Anonymous, CA (2012 Ford Focus Titanium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Clutch had to be replaced after shift forks and throw out bearing failed."

Anonymous, ON (2012 Ford Focus Titanium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The car was recalled due to the problem."

Anonymous, TX (2012 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"After intermittent problems for over a year the clutch was replaced under warranty."

Thomas K., PA (2012 Ford Focus SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Continuing problems with dual clutch transmission. Third time clutches were replaced (all under warranty). Like clockwork every 20,000 miles."

Thomas B., IL (2012 Ford Focus SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Ford has had problems with oil seal leakage on these clutches, we had the clutch replaced under their extended warranty in 2017 at about 57000 miles. Now in 2019 the clutch is slipping again and would cost $1700 to replace. We are VERY disappointed that the replacement would fail so soon!!"

Anonymous, NM (2012 Ford Focus SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"We weren't made aware that there was ongoing issues with the 2012 Ford Focus upon purchase from the dealer. Only after driving performance (i.e. poor shifting, jerking upon accelerating) decreased and inspection did we learn of the replacement program by Ford. Unfortunately, the cars are ineligible for the program after 100,000 miles. The most frustrating moment is when the maintenance technician at the dealership the car was purchased from admitted that they replace several of these a day because this is a known issue with this model. We bought ours in 2013."

Anonymous, WI (2012 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Clutch plates have been replaced 5 times, Transition TCU has been replaced 2 times"

Stephen F., TN (2012 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Significant clutch chatter due to transmission oil leakage onto clutch plates due to seal failure. This was the second rebuild by Ford. Luckily, it was covered by waranty as was the earlier rebuild."

Earl M., ME (2012 Ford Focus SE SFE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"This has been done multiple times by the Ford dealer. Parts are on Ford because it was a certified used car when bought with 11,000 miles"

Anonymous, IL (2012 Ford Focus SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"After multiple erratic transmission shifting and reprogramming the software Ford approved replacing the clutch"

Thomas K., PA (2012 Ford Focus SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"When I had the car in for 60000 mile service I asked them to check the transmission, they found that it matched the criteria from Ford for a warranty repair of the clutch seals. There was no charge. This has been a very efficient and smooth operating transmission"

Anonymous, NM (2012 Ford Focus SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The automatic shifting got wonky, slipping out of gear, not shifting at appropriate RPM's, etc."

Richard S., OR (2012 Ford Focus Titanium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Ford now admits that the dry clutch used in this automatic transmission is of a problematic design and has set empirical data points to determine if adjustment or replacement is necessary. Amato Ford’s service department writers have been obnoxious to the point where we will never buy another Ford product."

Michael O., WI (2012 Ford Focus)

"I told the Ford dealership about the rough shifting of the vehicle - esp. from a slow/stop to accelerated speed (such as going over a speed bump). They checked it out, confirmed the issue and replaced the clutch. Problem solved."

Anonymous, CA (2012 Ford Focus Titanium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Wasn't shifting properly. Downshifted unexpectedly. Wouldn't shift out of neutral when it should. Very dangerous to drive. Luckily I was within a mile of the dealer Service station. Luckily I had paid for the Extended 7 year warrantee."

Anonymous, NY (2012 Ford Focus Titanium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"After owning this car since 2012 the clutch was just repacled this year, 2018. Which has improved shifting to within normal expectation"
