Sporty handling, relatively low noise, and a well-done interior make the Focus feel more like a small sports sedan than a humdrum compact. Though not blazingly fast, the Focus does get good fuel economy. Several flaws keep it from being one of our top-rated small cars, though. The most irksome of those is the PowerShift automatic transmission, which stumbles at low speeds.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

What Owners Say

"Handles very well"

Anonymous, BC (2015 Ford Focus)

"The car is very quick, and exciting to drive. It handles much better than larger muscle cars."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Ford Focus)

"It's just a fun car to drive. It's responsive and peppy."

Anonymous, PA (2015 Ford Focus)

"Sometimes the transmission hesitates and we have read about the problems Ford has with the doble clutch transmission. We have not taken it to the dealer because it does not bother us but the future will tell."

Anonymous, PR (2015 Ford Focus)

"Is very smooth and responsive."

Anonymous, MO (2015 Ford Focus)

"Good: Acceleration is more than adequate, even when fully loaded with people. Handling is great. The car doesn't roll too much in turns and has good grip. The brakes have so much feel that they end up helping handling, because you can actually help turn the car by feeling the weight transfer to the front wheels during breaking, which rotates the rear and aids turning. It's really fun and enjoyable to do. The brake feel also enables smoother stops. Really, really sweet handling and braking. Love it."

David P., TX (2015 Ford Focus)

"Acceleration is quite good for the standard 2.0 liter engine. The car has the upgraded performance suspension and tire package. Handling is quick, precise, and athletic."

Anonymous, GA (2015 Ford Focus)

"Five speed manual transmission is excellent and fun to drive."

Anonymous, IN (2015 Ford Focus)

"This is a pocket rocket, same 0-60 times as my first new Car 1965 GTO with a huge V-8 Engine. But this sweet little ting handles so much better. Technology Wins,"

Fred H., MI (2015 Ford Focus)

"We had trouble with the shifting transmission for automatic ford focus. It took 2 years to get it fixed. Knowing what I know now, even though I liked my car, I wouldn't buy it."

Anonymous, QC (2015 Ford Focus)

"Accelerates well, handles good, but can be more difficult when windy."

Anonymous, FL (2015 Ford Focus)

"The Focus drives and handles well and is fun to drive. It shifts smoothly."

Anonymous, MD (2015 Ford Focus)

"Has very decent acceleration, and fairly nimble handling."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Ford Focus)

"Very tight car. Tons of power and toque and handles like a sports car. My daughters think it is too stiff and don't like the ride but I find it just what I wanted."

Anonymous, AB (2015 Ford Focus)

"Very sporty. The dual clutch transmission takes some getting used to, but you get used to it."

Jon K., MN (2015 Ford Focus)

"I have the manual transmission so mountain driving, which I do weekly, is a breeze. I routinely blow past larger, more powerful cars and truck having the manual transmission, and as you know, it is increasingly difficult to find a manual in a new car."

Bruce M., CO (2015 Ford Focus)

"Transmissions in this model are failures and should be recalled for replacements. Ford refuses and continues to stall until the vehicles are out of warranty. It stutters when applying the gas."

Anonymous, VA (2015 Ford Focus)

"transmission slips sometimes in low gear, but not all of the time."

Anonymous, OH (2015 Ford Focus)

"love the acceleration and it handles very nicely"

Anonymous, MD (2015 Ford Focus)

"I just had it in the dealership for a revving noise when I first accelerate. If I stop in traffic, it does not immediately re-accelerate and there is a hesitation before it does. I am waiting for someone in back of me to plow into the rear. I am so sorry that I didn’t pursue the lemon law. Ford knew it was defective, because they sent me a letter saying that any replacement of the TCM would be covered by Ford."

Carol S., PA (2015 Ford Focus)

"My Focus ST is a blast to drive. I have faster cars, but it is not possible to enjoy driving them on the street legally. With the Focus I can run through the gears and not be illegal or unsafe. The handling is predicable making the car easy to control."

Anonymous, VA (2015 Ford Focus)

"Car handling is impeccable, you always know what your wheels are doing and that is communicated well through the steering wheel. Acceleration is rather boring really, it isn't slow but lacks the fun factor car like this should have."

Anonymous, TX (2015 Ford Focus)

"It is manual transmission. ..love it."

Anonymous, WA (2015 Ford Focus)

"I love the handling, my Focus is so much fun to drive. There are curvy roads in my town I call my "road course" that I enjoy driving in my Focus. My only regret is that I could'nt afford to buy the ST model."

Anonymous, NC (2015 Ford Focus)

"Acceleration is not very good. Handles well. Gets excellent mileage. Good looking."

Anonymous, ME (2015 Ford Focus)

"Enjoy driving electric! So quiet!"

KENNETH Z., CA (2015 Ford Focus)

"Only fair power on hills."

Anonymous, PA (2015 Ford Focus)

"Our Ford Focus Electric is very responsive, with quick, secure steering, excellent cornering, sure braking, a firm, well controlled and comfortable ride, and instant accelerator response. It is astonishingly quiet as well. Altogether a delight to drive!"

SANDRA K., MD (2015 Ford Focus)

"Very surprised on how smooth and quiet the two litre engine performed."

CLAYTON O., MA (2015 Ford Focus)

"This car had a transmission recall issue that the service center fixed as quickly as they were able. However, it was not until I brought it to their attention that I knew it was a recall issue. The issue is mostly fixed, but the car still ocassionally shudders on acceleration"

NOELANI S., CA (2015 Ford Focus)

"Quite impressed with acceleration and handling of this car. We have not had a major road trip with it yet."

LARRY K., MB (2015 Ford Focus)

"The pickup is nice and I like the acceleration."

DAVID K., MA (2015 Ford Focus)

"Car is a lot of fun to drive. The steering is rather aggressive; takes some getting used to."

ROBERT L., OR (2015 Ford Focus)

"Very good acceleration and superb handling"

RANDY K., AZ (2015 Ford Focus)

"The Ford Focus has great handing. Combined with all electric acceleration it's darn fun."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Ford Focus)

"Both are decent. It handles well on the road and acceleration while not stellar, is decent."

ANTHONY S., NY (2015 Ford Focus)

"Acceleration is tepid at best."

Anonymous, VA (2015 Ford Focus)

"Transmission shifting from first to second and second to third is annoying. CR commented on this before, but I didn't consider it sufficient reason not to lease the car. I still don't."

Anonymous, MI (2015 Ford Focus)

"This is the most FUN car to drive. Pick up is great handling is great, and the engine never wines, when I forget to put into 5th gear on the Hiway, it runs like nothings wrong. Love my Focus. When we have a family gathering, it looks like a Focus Party in my driveway, as we all have one."

MARVIN W., MI (2015 Ford Focus)

"handling, safe-excellent side mirrors, backup camera, good gas mileage. plenty of acceleration. altho the interior design is grand, space is wasted. Need a moveable right arm rest"

JAMES C., SC (2015 Ford Focus)

"Feels solid"

WALTER I., MA (2015 Ford Focus)

"The ST model has just the right amount of power to make driving fun again. I'm 69, but feel like I'm 19 when driving around in this Sporty Car !!"

FRED H., MI (2015 Ford Focus)

"My 2015 Focus is so much fun to drive. It has plenty of pep but it is the handling I like the most. When I am in fun mode I can take the curves at a good clip and it's like the car is on rails."

LYNN M., NC (2015 Ford Focus)

"The general handling and ease of acceleration makes it a joy to drive. My wife loves it."

GEORGE S., IA (2015 Ford Focus)

"The car, with the manual, is peppy and fast and has no problem driving the mountains outside of Denver which is a huge plus."

BRUCE M., CO (2015 Ford Focus)

"Handling is top notch, as is the 5-speed manual transmission. Mileage is excellent. Hatch is roomy. On the downside, driver's seat could offer more support in the SE model."

J R., DC (2015 Ford Focus)

"Transmission is bucks and shudders on start up."

Anonymous, TN (2015 Ford Focus)

"It hesitates when I accelerate."

STEPHANIE S., WA (2015 Ford Focus)

"The ST model has tons of power and very tight controlled handling. Excellent braking."

Anonymous, AB (2015 Ford Focus)

"The acceleration with the 1.0 liter from a stop light is slow, but the acceleration in 3rd or 4th gear while spooling up the turbo is wonderful. Off the line doesn't usually matter anyway because there is typically another car in front of me. I don't need 0-60 in 7 seconds when someone is blocking my path."

DANIEL G., MN (2015 Ford Focus)

"Faster"

FRANK C., MA (2015 Ford Focus)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"The seats are nice looking but nos confortable for long trips."

Anonymous, PR (2015 Ford Focus)

"I have the leather seats, and they are very comfortable. The car is fun to drive for the price I paid for it"

Jon K., MN (2015 Ford Focus)

"the seats & overall ride are very comfortable, but the road noise is noticeable"

Anonymous, MD (2015 Ford Focus)

"cloth material cheap, already worn on bolsters"

Brian S., VA (2015 Ford Focus)

"The Recaro seats are very snug. They break in eventually but still aren't very comfortable. Seat controls are clunky and vague, seat belt goes over them which makes accessing them difficult. The rear headrests cannot be removed unless you pull the seats down first, which is a hassle. The car's handling overall is excellent and steering wheel feel is above average, however the leather started wearing down rather quickly on the left side of the steering wheel. The car is pretty quiet for a sporty hatchback and the window controls feel rather high quality."

Anonymous, TX (2015 Ford Focus)

"A little noisy but it handles well"

Anonymous, FL (2015 Ford Focus)

"Good: Seats have wide side bolsters that enable me to fit easily. Seat is manually adjustable which means it adjusts faster than electric adjustments. Car is quiet and rides comfortably. Really sweet ride and handling balance. Love driving it. Bad: Nothing"

David P., TX (2015 Ford Focus)

"The front bucket seats are not comfortable, particular on my wife's back; She reports she can't seem to get her knees into a comfortable position, and can't see out the front windshield without a pillow under her."

Alan C., PA (2015 Ford Focus)

"The center console is too big and hits me in the knee."

Anonymous, MD (2015 Ford Focus)

"Comfortable, supportive bucket seats. Not overly cushioned. Noise level in vehicle is relatively low. Ride is firm. Vehicles handles very well. Has performance suspension option."

Anonymous, GA (2015 Ford Focus)

"I find the seats hard to get comfortable in and adjust to my preference. The controls/buttons/inside latch for the trunk opening, hood opening/unlatching, and hazard lights are ill-positioned, I have inadvertently caught my foot on the hood latch several times when exiting the car, hit the hazard lights many times b/c they are too close to the audio controls, and lastly, the trunk release is immediately to the left of the headlights knob and I have hit this time and time again - so annoying."

Lyn P., WA (2015 Ford Focus)

"Very comfortable and good support. Easy to adjust. Putting the back seats down is a real hassle."

Anonymous, WA (2015 Ford Focus)

"Seats don't have lumbar adjustment for longer trips."

Anonymous, PA (2015 Ford Focus)

"The seats are not comfortable for a long drive."

Anonymous, ME (2015 Ford Focus)

"Back seat room leaves a lot to be desired."

Anonymous, AK (2015 Ford Focus)

"Passenger seat too hard. Not adjustable enough."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Ford Focus)

"Heated seats"

Anonymous, PA (2015 Ford Focus)

"Drivers seat not very comfy on long journeys. Poor legroom in rear"

MARK H., OH (2015 Ford Focus)

"Rear seat leg room doesn't exist."

Anonymous, MD (2015 Ford Focus)

"The 4 wheel independant suspension holds the bumps well. The engine has decent power. The ride is fairly quiet."

ANTHONY S., NY (2015 Ford Focus)

"The ride of the Focus is amazing. It is very sporty and unbelievably quiet. The quietness, with the 1.0 liter engine and 6 speed manual , at interstate speeds is fantastic."

DANIEL G., MN (2015 Ford Focus)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"For the price paid, this vehicle exceeds our expectations, is a joy to drive, and has better than expected fuel economy."

Anonymous, MO (2015 Ford Focus)

"I got everything I wanted eg. back up camera, heated seats, fog lights, leather seats for at least $3000 less than other comparable cars. The back seats do not fold down easily. You have to tale headrests off in order for seats to lie flat."

Anonymous, WA (2015 Ford Focus)

"When I shopped for my 2015 Focus it seemed that dealers in my area were advertising sharp discounts on other Ford models but not the Focus. A few months later I found dealers were advertising the Focus at prices about $2000 less than I paid. A positive aspect of Focus value is the 5 year drive train warranty."

Anonymous, FL (2015 Ford Focus)

"I love my Focus and love that Ford is now talking about building a smaller than the new Ranger size truck based on the Focus platform. I love that Ford will make a Subaru type of Focus next year but hate Ford's decision to eliminate all other passenger cars. Typical Ford move not planning for a change in lifestyles and cars we want and need."

Bruce M., CO (2015 Ford Focus)

"I have the ST model. The performance and driving experience has exceeded my expectations. It's more fun to drive than my Corvette. The transmission is easy to shift and feels much more expensive than what I paid for the car. My Focus ST also has the Recaro seats. This is a major factor in how much I enjoy being in the car."

Anonymous, VA (2015 Ford Focus)

"It has delivered in every category. Low cost of maintenance, great gas mileage, great handling, great styling, everything works well and it is a pleasure to drive"

Anonymous, AB (2015 Ford Focus)

"With a $4,000 rebate, what a deal !!!"

Fred H., MI (2015 Ford Focus)

"Ford clearly sells a lot of them, but I have been dissatisfied. I can rarely get larger items in the car through the trunk or backseat - items that will fit in other compact sedans - and more than anything, although I expected a very basic model when I shopped, I think I paid too much for what this car is."

Lyn P., WA (2015 Ford Focus)

"I have had nothing but problems with this auto. I have already replaced the TCM and the clutch. I had a 2009 Focus and never replaced anything more than tires and the brakes. When I drive it sounds like I’m driving a race car. It is the absolute worst car I have ever owned. This car should have been recalled. I even wrote to Ford to complain and pretty much got blown off. I planned on this being my last automobile, but I cannot depend on it. Last month when I was on the turnpike by myself at night, I got a message telling me to turn the car off for 5 minutes, because the transmission overheated. I wasted $22,000.00, as well as my peace of mind."

Carol S., PA (2015 Ford Focus)

"car was relatively reasonable gets good mileage and handles well on the road ad around town. quick steering handles well in curves."

Anonymous, OH (2015 Ford Focus)

"I cannot understand why you consistently rate this car poorly. At a bit over $15K, it handles beautifully, is truly fun to drive, gets great gas mileage, and holds a ton of stuff with its hatchback. The stick shift is super smooth."

J R., DC (2015 Ford Focus)

"Electric cars are spectacular for operating costs!"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Ford Focus)

"As an electric no gas and almost no maintenance."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Ford Focus)

"comfortable ride and efficient driving experience re mph and driving in traffic"

LOUIS R., NH (2015 Ford Focus)

"Good buy."

Anonymous, VA (2015 Ford Focus)

"Price paid was about 2/3 of MSRP. Included was a 7 year ESP basically extending the 3/36 warranty out to 7/60. Car came equipped with everything needed for driving in a cold climate state, nothing more."

TIMOTHY T., WI (2015 Ford Focus)

"Great value, luxury car features, for low price - lane departure, cross traffic alert, heated seats, dual climate control, auto wipers/headlights, leather, sunroof, avg 29 mpg in town"

MARK C., VA (2015 Ford Focus)

Styling

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

BRUCE M., CO (2015 Ford Focus)

"Terrific, very pleasing styling"

RANDY K., AZ (2015 Ford Focus)

"smart and efficient; aesthetically pleasing"

LOUIS R., NH (2015 Ford Focus)

"I have the ST model, looks great in Red, many favorable comments."

FRED H., MI (2015 Ford Focus)

"Sleek, futuristic"

WALTER I., MA (2015 Ford Focus)
