Sporty handling, relatively low noise, and a well-done interior make the Focus feel more like a small sports sedan than a humdrum compact. Though not blazingly fast, the Focus does get good fuel economy: We recorded 29 mpg overall in our tests for both the four-cylinder and three-cylinder turbo. Several flaws keep it from being one of our top-rated small cars, though.

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Several flaws keep it from being one of our top-rated small cars, though. The most irksome of those is the PowerShift automatic transmission, which stumbles at low speeds. While updates have improved refinement, this transmission is still hesitant in stop-and-go traffic and sometimes transmits drivetrain vibrations through the cabin. Rear-seat space is tight for this class, with little leg room for two adults and very cramped quarters for three people. A more minor consideration is the radio controls, which are needlessly confusing.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2016 Ford Focus owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, clutch replacement.

What Owners Say

Clutch replacement

"Flaw from design and Ford bought back the care in 2019"

Anonymous, (2016 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"I bought the car in June of 2019. One week later, I took it back and they replaced the clutch. Three months later they replaced the clutch again and this one is now failing."

Anonymous, (2016 Ford Focus SE Unsure)

"Second replacement"

Anonymous, (2016 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Vehicle is an automatic with dual clutch system. Known problem with clutch slipping. Ford replaced the clutch assembly under warranty."

Anonymous, (2016 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Shifting was flakey, particularly in Chicago heavy traffic. It aways worked, but not as well as it should. I took it in and officially complained about the flakey shifting, a week before the 3 year warranty ran out. They replaced the clutch and reprogrammed, the computer. My car has a six speed manual transmission which is shifted automatically by a computer. So just looking at it you would think it is just a regular automatic transmission. Although the shifting was flakey the car always worked. And through 3 brutal Chicago winters, it always starts for me and it still has the original battery."

Anonymous, IL (2016 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"This is the second transmission problem with this car, but despite this we like the car and are happy with it"

Anonymous, (2016 Ford Focus Titanium Unsure)

"14,000 miles needed a new clutch. Problem getting part from Mexico. I was told by a Ford Representative that this problem will happen again and not to drive the car on long trips"

Norman S., DE (2016 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Clutch slipping"

Howard J., IL (2016 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The dual clutch transmission continues to have problems after replacement with chatter, sputter"

Anonymous, PA (2016 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Car would jerk and shutter during the 1-2 shift."

Harold F., FL (2016 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"chatering when stating from a start."

J V., WI (2016 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Slippage on hills and turns. Ford's first attempt to correct was a software update. After 500 miles without the software update correcting the slippage, Ford did replace a clutch. The slippage has been resolved with that mechanical correction/part replacement."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Ford Focus Titanium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Within 2 weeks of driving it off the lot i had transmission problems. It would shutter when ever I accelerated."

William D., AR (2016 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Car started hesitating when starting to move after coming to a stop. Clutch was replaced under warranty."

Michael H., TX (2016 Ford Focus Titanium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The car would stutter when starting up but was fine after shifting into second gear."

Marcia B., TX (2016 Ford Focus)

"Chatter & vibration on take off and 1-2 shift"

Anonymous, FL (2016 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"When I bought the car, I realized the gears were slipping. I looked online and found this was a warranty recall. I took the car back where I bought it and they replaced the clutch."

T W., (2016 Ford Focus)

"When I stopped in for my regular oil change one time, I was notified that, had I driven very much further, the clutch would have gone out, causing me to be at risk for an accident. So why was this not detected at the previous oil change? Service depts. are supposed to perform a thorough point check on everything (I get the status sheets), so how did they miss the fact that the clutch was going to need a replacement soon?"

Anonymous, WA (2016 Ford Focus)
Transmission rebuild or replacement

"Clutch started not always going into gearing took it to two dealerships over two months and they said they couldn't replicate the problem. Two days after my last visit it would no longer go into 4th gear at all. They kept it for a couple weeks and then said they would order a Warrenty replacement but I could take the car till it came in. I did drive it some more but then second gear went out completely. It took 3 months before the transmission came in and was fixed."

Anonymous, CO (2016 Ford Focus RS 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Clutch and transmission we bad 3 times, could not be resolved and dear bought back the car."

Anonymous, (2016 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Saw fluid leaking and the transmission was skipping it turns out this was an issue known to Ford before I purchased"

Anonymous, DE (2016 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The car was bought brand new in 2016. It currently has 30,000 miles. The transmission has been replaced TWICE already. Once at 12,000 miles and again at 20,000 miles. Sadly at 30,000 miles it is slipping AGAIN and is being replaced a third time shortly"

Anonymous, MD (2016 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Rough shifting

"I've had to take this Ford Focus to the dealer several times to fix rough shifting and transmission slipping. Each time the dealer has informed me they cannot find a problem."

Anonymous, MA (2016 Ford Focus Unsure 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"This problem started since I bought this car, which was a used car. During hard braking to a complete stop, the car almost stalls. The control system waits until the last minute to disengage the clutch, almost stalling it. Also, during full throttle during a passing situation, you let off the gas pedal, but the car continues accelerating for a second or two after the fact. Upshift during full throttle will cause clutch slippage. Last, the transmission overheats during slow moving stop & go traffic."

Anonymous, OH (2016 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"major recall for 2nd gear jogging"

Anonymous, NY (2016 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Car is equipped with dual clutch automatic transmission that balks, hunts and chatters. Unsure whether problem is due to poor design or manufacturing defect"

Christopher B., TX (2016 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Transmission 2nd gear was replaced. I had the identical problem with a 2015 focus but the dealer wouldn't believe me."

Anonymous, BC (2016 Ford Focus S 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"noticeable vibration during shifting"

Paul H., VA (2016 Ford Focus)

"Ford has problems with Focus transmissions"

Stephen K., (2016 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"since the day the car was bought... took over two years to get Ford to fix transmission properly and for that we had to go to a second dealer... wouldn't shift properly."

Anonymous, ON (2016 Ford Focus)
Slipping transmission

"Rough shifting into 2nd gear, car shudders and sounds like pebbles being shook in a tin can. Dealer repair shop said it is not bad enough to repair."

Perry C., OR (2016 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Ford repaired the vehicle. Apparently there have been problems with the 6-speed automatic transmission. The service technician said the slipping would come back. Otherwise, the car has been great."

Stephen M., VA (2016 Ford Focus Titanium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The trans. jerks on stepping on gas. Service department said it was a problem with this model and to bring it in if it got too bad."

Anonymous, NE (2016 Ford Focus 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"This is a known problem with these vehicles which ford will not do anything about."

Anonymous, WA (2016 Ford Focus)

"This was a Ford certified car when purchased. The problem in shifting was promptly corrected by Ford, without cost, Well satisfied with service. Would buy a ford again."

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Ford Focus)
Transmission computer

"Multiple reprogramings to improve loose shifting."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"It shifted flakey, some of the time but not most of the time. When they replaced the clutch they also re programmed the computer. Shifting is much cleaner since. I wish I could have found a car just like what I bought with a manual transmission."

Anonymous, IL (2016 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"When vehicle is warm the transmission sporadically kind of stutters when accelerating"

Anonymous, TX (2016 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

David W., NM (2016 Ford Focus 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Was reset to try to resolve the transmission stutter problem in first gear before they eventually replaced the clutch."

Marcia B., TX (2016 Ford Focus)

"Transmission shifts at low rpm before clutch is fully engaged"

Peter K., ON (2016 Ford Focus Titanium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Ford fixed the issue for free. The car shifted roughly and would often roll back at stop lights. Ford fixed no further issues."

Anonymous, MA (2016 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"When in reverse the screen would black out"

Anonymous, FL (2016 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Squeaks or rattles

"The car has developed a consistent rattle that appears to come from the dash/firewall, while driving over gravel or rough pavement with patch repairs. The exhaust system is quite loud in the engine compartment. Due to the Covid-19, none of these items have been repaired."

Anonymous, OH (2016 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

Automatic climate control

"It started causing heat to be blown into the car when it was 115 degrees outside. I had to drive with my windows down and it took five days to fix."

Anonymous, AZ (2016 Ford Focus Unsure 1.0-L 3 Cyl turbo)

"The climate control system does not correctly indicate recirculate door position (open/closed). Furthermore, changing the recirculate function has no effect in certain situations. Never have owned ANY car that ignores driver input like this!"

Gordon V., TX (2016 Ford Focus RS 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Blower (fan) motor

"I did not use the air conditioning when I first bought the car. When I used it last week, the blower motor was making a loud noise. I have not had the issue checked yet."

T W., (2016 Ford Focus)
Heater system

"I believe the heater core was leaking. The referred to the problem as a " box" . The repair took 2 full days. I was told that the entire dash needed to come off to get to the problem. The presenting symptom was a large puddle of water in the passenger footwell on hot summer days after running the AC for long periods"

Cynthia A., PA (2016 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

Headlights

"I have the optional adaptive HID headlights. One headlight assembly failed. The cost of the assembly from the dealership is $1,800. Because the same assembly failed once under warranty, Ford covered 95% of the cost of this repair."

Anonymous, WA (2016 Ford Focus ST 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"There were marks inside the headlight that looked like water spots. No actual water inside the headlight. Ford refused to warranty the headlight even thought they had warrantied the other side for the same issue 2 years early."

Anonymous, SC (2016 Ford Focus ST 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Wiper motor or washer

"The wipers jam and either refuse to move or move in a jerky or irregular fashion, especially in the variable speed mode. You have to repeatedly turn them off and on to fix the jam."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Ford Focus 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"After I bought the car, the left wiper could not pull itself back while on intermittent swipes. It took six visits: two adjustments, two motor replacements, then final solution after the non-Ford dealer did a thorough review, sending me back to toe Ford service dept. I had to consistently do one-off swipes to clear the stopped left wiper and this usually worked. However, the right wiper would usually pull it back on the next swipe. Eventually the right one also started doing this and, of course, the wipers always stopped right in my field of vision. These shenanigans were as distracting as trying to text whole driving (something I never do). MOST of this was covered under the extended warranty I had, but the labor was not free; it cost me approximately $900 to get this issue resolved."

Anonymous, WA (2016 Ford Focus)

Anonymous, CA (2016 Ford Focus RS 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Drive System

Driveshaft or axle, CV joint, differential, transfer case, 4WD/AWD components, driveline vibration, traction control, electronic stability control (ESC), electrical failure.

What Owners Say

Fuel gauge/sender

"There was a recall involving the fuel system calibration. It was to update software and replace a calibrated plastic tank which could deform and change volume thus providing inaccurate data to the fuel management system. This causes the miles to empty readings to be wrong. I presented the car for the recall but only my software was updated. I continue to run out of fuel well before zero. Most recently the car was out of fuel with seventeen miles to empty!"
