Sporty handling, relatively low noise, and a well-done interior make the Focus feel more like a small sports sedan than a humdrum compact. Though not blazingly fast, the Focus does get good fuel economy: We recorded 29 mpg overall in our tests for both the four-cylinder and three-cylinder turbo. Several flaws keep it from being one of our top-rated small cars, though.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

What Owners Say

"This vehicle always hesitates upon acceleration making me feel uncomfortable when negotiating traffic. The ride is a tiny bit ruff but handles well on tight turns (aside from the hesitation if needing to accelerate)."

Terry T., CT (2016 Ford Focus)

"My Focus accelerates with surprising quickness and handles nimbly. Its a fun car to drive - providing good road feel. The gas mileage is outstanding. In town its in the 22 to 25 range and on the road, up to 38 mpg at 70 to 75 mph. I've had the car 6 months and the more I drive it the more I like it."

Anonymous, GA (2016 Ford Focus)

"The 1 liter, 3 cylinder motor provides peppy acceleration and outstanding fuel economy. The car handles well in dry, wet, and snowy conditions. The transmission has not given any trouble and shifts quickly and quietly."

Anonymous, WY (2016 Ford Focus)

"Easy, smooth, no complaints."

Joy R., GA (2016 Ford Focus)

"Handling is very good for a non-sports car. I have owned an 1988 RX-7 and 1979 924, the Focus would not keep up with them in the corners. It would however leave my SO's Prius in the dust. Feels like a VW Jetta to me. It does seem to have a bit of under steer when pushed (good from my point of view).."

P C., NC (2016 Ford Focus)

"This car is a kick to drive. It has excellent acceleration and cornering ability. The 6-speed manual transmission has a good feel during shifting."

Eastep T., WA (2016 Ford Focus)

"Auto xmsn needs to be eliminated"

Anonymous, VA (2016 Ford Focus)

"Quick agile."

Anonymous, AZ (2016 Ford Focus)

"The Acceleration is more than adequate for the town driving I do and have been pleased with its smoothness at interstates speeds when I take it out of town. Pleasantly surprised with its quickness and highway gas mileage (38 mpg at interstate speeds.)"

Anonymous, GA (2016 Ford Focus)

"After reaching about 5000 miles, the engine is now fully broken in and the car is fast. Unfortunately the heavier you are with the right foot the more mileage will suffer."

Paul M., PA (2016 Ford Focus)

"Its a blast to drive. Lots of power, revvy engine, lots of torque and it sou D's great"

Alexis L., ON (2016 Ford Focus)

"My car is the ST model. It has good acceleration and handling for a front wheel drive car. It's fun to drive in the mountains and around town."

Kevin H., WA (2016 Ford Focus)

"While I researched other vehicles the Focus RS offered performance far above its competitors, every day it makes my commute enjoyable"

Diane M., MA (2016 Ford Focus)

"This is the peppiest car I have ever owned. The turbo supplies instant power on demand. It is a joy to drive this car."

Paul L., NY (2016 Ford Focus)

"Acceleration and braking is amazing. AWD makes winter driving easy. Sweet ride"

Anonymous, AB (2016 Ford Focus)

"There is a delay in accelerating from a slow speed."

Anonymous, MD (2016 Ford Focus)

"Got to test drive and practice with what you buy. Acceleration: Want to go now? Press the accelerator and you go yesterday. Sport mode: Changes the computer controls for the suspension and steering. WOW! EXHiILARATING! "Nough said."

Kenneth S., MI (2016 Ford Focus)

"It had great acceleration, the engine sound is pleasing when pushed hard. Engine noise is minimal at highway speeds and in town. The transmission is quiet, but abrupt shifting a low speeds is disconcerting. The car gets excellent gas mileage and is economical to operate. It is fun to drive on the highway or in the mountains, especially the mountains. It handles so well."

Judd S., VA (2016 Ford Focus)

"Very peppy little engine."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Ford Focus)

"Transmission intermittently feels like it slips and sometimes jerks . That is not good"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Ford Focus)

Anonymous, CA (2016 Ford Focus)

"excellent acceleration for a small vehicle that get good gas mileage and very responsive on the back roads."

Dale F., OH (2016 Ford Focus)

"Accelerates briskly when I want it to or need to. Handling is also excellent. A fun car to drive. And does this without burning lots of gas."

Anonymous, IL (2016 Ford Focus)

"Reasonable acceleration and handling, decent track car on a dry track, outstanding on a wet track, a little stiff but tolerable on the street"

Anonymous, MI (2016 Ford Focus)

"It "shudders" upon starting out and doesn't back up adequately when on a snowy hill."

Anonymous, WI (2016 Ford Focus)

"This car is a track star. It sticks like a formula Ford. I can get on the gas faster than the other cars and the awd system directs power to where the grip is. It's amazing!"

Joe S., IL (2016 Ford Focus)

"it is fun to drive! nippy and responsive"

Anonymous, CT (2016 Ford Focus)

"Acceleration is ok for the type. Handling is also ok, but numb (especially compared to a 1st gen focus). Transmission is weird, feels unusually jerky and grinds and groans like a manual that is being mishandled."

Abel P., MA (2016 Ford Focus)

"Handling is very good. Again not sports car good, but very good for a passenger car. Not as fast as some other electric cars off the line, but good enough and better than others at highway passing. Plenty of power up to 80 MPH."

P L F., NC (2016 Ford Focus)

"Car is responsive and agile while being economical to feed"

Norman I., NY (2016 Ford Focus)

"For a little 4 cyl. H/B it handles very well. Accelerates at a good rate.Responds quickly to steering and braking."

"Handling and acceleration."

Howard J., IL (2016 Ford Focus)

"very much a fun car to drive. never leaves you wanting for more power. drives and holds the road like a much larger car. acceleration is right there with the best"

G M., NJ (2016 Ford Focus)

"Handling is the best feature. Best stock handling performance hatchback I’ve owned. Acceleration is strong, but needs more top end power."

Anonymous, SC (2016 Ford Focus)

"such a poor transmission you can not drive it in the snow unless you want to be stranded. This is a company car so I have no choice in the matter. However this is the third focus I have driven and none of the dealers are willing to fix the transmission problems even with a recall in place. I took the 2015 into three dealers and none could repair the problem. Design flaw"

TOM H., TN (2016 Ford Focus)

"Turning radius poor"

Anonymous, ON (2016 Ford Focus)

"Has very good acceleration"

Anonymous, MI (2016 Ford Focus)

"After 3 years of driving a Focus ST I knew that the RS could take that experience up higher and I was not disappointed, it's an amazing car with amazing performance and handling."

DIANE M., MA (2016 Ford Focus)

"It is very peppy. You cannot drive this car and not smile."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Ford Focus)

"I have owned sporty cars all my life and modified each one of them. This one is the first that I can honestly say I don't feel compelled to change. The handling and ride quality is so amazing. It does make a bunch of power and torque steers quite a lot, making me wish it had AWD or RWD, but for the money it is fantastic."

RICHARD G., OR (2016 Ford Focus)

"Very good acceleration and handling, powerful engine."

DANIEL G., IN (2016 Ford Focus)

"Drives like a bat out of Hell"

DEAN R., MO (2016 Ford Focus)

"Great handing a pleasure to drive - my 3 cylinder with tubro is very nifty!"

G M., CA (2016 Ford Focus)

"With the turbo engine it does accelerate very nicely. Very nice cornering abilities, fun to drive,6speed transmission enjoyable on open roads."

SHANE F., CA (2016 Ford Focus)

"When I saw the salesman after I had had the car for a while, I told him I didn't like how it acts when I accelerate. He told me that the 2016 Focus was built to "feel" like you're shifting gears. I didn't notice it when I took it for a test drive, so perhaps I didn't drive it far enough. But that's the thing I'd change about it if I could. When someone from Ford called me to ask about my experience with my new car, I told them about that."

Anonymous, VA (2016 Ford Focus)

"acceleration and handling for the price is absolutely amazing you do feel the front wheel torque when accelerating but it seems minimal and does not concern me as being any safety risk"

RICH G., GA (2016 Ford Focus)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"This is my around town car. I am 6' 3" in height and the seat fits me - I find it very comfortable. The vehicle is surprisingly quiet. The ride is firm but smooth on highway and not jerky on town streets. It's a fun car to drive. I was pleasantly surprised at its quickness."

Anonymous, GA (2016 Ford Focus)

"The seats in my vehicle are extremely comfortable. They continue to be comfortable even after a 5 hour drive. The car is also extremely quiet. It is so quiet that sometimes when I am parked somewhere I forget I even have my car turned on. Overall the car rides very smoothly and quietly."

Anonymous, WY (2016 Ford Focus)

"my st is the most comfortable car ever. very quiet for a high powered car. corners with the best and much more expensive automobiles"

G M., NJ (2016 Ford Focus)

"My car is the ST version with Ricaro seats. I'm 6'5" tall and fit into the seats comfortably. The seats sold the car!"

Kevin H., WA (2016 Ford Focus)

"The seats are very comfortable - easily accommodating my 6' - 3''s. The ride is exceptionally smooth for a smaller vehicle and the handling makes it fun to drive. The noise level is also relatively low."

Anonymous, GA (2016 Ford Focus)

"Leather seats are supportive, driver has plenty of adjustments (passengers are out of luck). The ride quality is ok. It does have strange rattling in the tramission after only 25k miles."

Abel P., MA (2016 Ford Focus)

"My wife and I wanted a reliable, safe car for our 16 year old daughter in 2016. The choice came down to the Honda Civic or the Ford Focus. Julette test drove both cars and preferred the Focus for its ride, handling, and features. Ford gave us additional discounts for my wife's military service. The Focus has proven itself to be reliable and extremely comfortable small car. The heated cloth seats are extremely comfortable and the car swallows bumps on I-90 as if they weren't there. Every time I drive the car, I am amazed at how quiet and smooth the Focus is. Our daughter loves her Focus and we do too."

Anonymous, WY (2016 Ford Focus)

"Seats do not have enough adjustability and they are hard to make the adjustments that do exist. The third seat cushion I now have helps (wedge type). Not enough room around gas pedal"

Anonymous, AR (2016 Ford Focus)

"The seats are ok for small trips, anythng longer that 1 hour drive the seats are not comfortable."

Anonymous, OH (2016 Ford Focus)

"Squeaks and rattles are annoying. Ride comfort is surprisingly good considering ST suspension. Love the Recaro seats."

Anonymous, SC (2016 Ford Focus)

"no wind noise, very little road noise, especially on smooth pavement, the seats fit me great."

Scott H., WA (2016 Ford Focus)

"I handles like a sport sedan and is fun to drive. This car rides like a big car. It handles harsh road surfaces well and quietly. It is very quiet. Noise at high speeds is minimal, so a normal voice for conversation is possible. The cloth seats are excellent it is nice to have good cloth seats we do not like leather. Cloth seats on other cars tend to be of lower quality and comfort. The seating for the driver and front passenger are excellent."

Judd S., VA (2016 Ford Focus)

"I am satisfied with most areas. My one complaint is there isn't enough head or leg room."

Mordecia A., TN (2016 Ford Focus)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"I got the car in early 2017, it was dirt cheap (just under $16,000 after the tax credit on the road, plus $425 shipping, I could not find one close to home). Because of free charging opportunities, I am only paying for half or less of charging. Almost no scheduled maintenance. Cost per mile is really low."

P C., NC (2016 Ford Focus)

"Excellent small economy car. Great acceleration and super dual clutch transmission."

Anonymous, AZ (2016 Ford Focus)

"because CR and other reviews badmouth the dual clutch automatic, this car can be had with a very deep discount. reliability has been very good..........."

Anonymous, MN (2016 Ford Focus)

"Ford gave us a much better deal on the Focus than Honda on the Civic we looked at. Ford gave my wife the military discount due to her service as well as other discounts. To date, all the Focus has required is regular service. The six speed dual clutch automatic transmission has worked flawlessly and the car has not required any warranty work. It is really too bad that Ford is discontinuing the Focus, especially now that they have worked out the transmission issues. It really is the perfect car for a 19 year old college student."

Anonymous, WY (2016 Ford Focus)

"My husband cannot drive because of a xxxxxx and I, his wife, do our driving around town and short trips."

Anonymous, TN (2016 Ford Focus)

"For the price charged, the Focus Hatchback has been completely reliable, and given it's overall size and price, very comfortable to drive"

Norman I., NY (2016 Ford Focus)

"An amazing car, Fast, quick, handles well"

Anonymous, AB (2016 Ford Focus)

"I bought the RS, which is a track car you can drive on the street. I use the car for rural winding roads that are all around me"

Paul M., PA (2016 Ford Focus)

"Bought the as a computer car since I travel 137miles per day. Not good in snow. Barely makes it up gentle incline. The previous Focus I owned gave me a few headaches and after 135000 ,miles transmission trouble. Decided to trade it in rather than pump more money into it. Also early on the alternator pooped out. That was a big bill. Still, I wanted a car with great mileage and relatively safe, which is why I bought another Focus."

Mary H., PA (2016 Ford Focus)

"Good fuel economy, can put a lot of stuff in the car including my 70 pound. Except for a clutch problem, very reliable."

Howard J., IL (2016 Ford Focus)

"I got an automatic, power everything except seats, air, AM/FM CD, sync, etc, etc for $11975."

Scott H., WA (2016 Ford Focus)

"It certainly doesn't ride or perform as well as the Mercury Marquis it replaced but for the price it performs in all factors much better than expected."

Anonymous, MN (2016 Ford Focus)

"Electric car in general are a great deal, The Cost is low and cost of ownership is almost zero, especially if you have solar system on your home"

Dan G., CA (2016 Ford Focus)

"For the sticker price I am very satisfied with the high level of grip and ability to put power to the ground. This is a performance bargain."

Joe S., IL (2016 Ford Focus)

"Great mileage. Styiish"

F S., ON (2016 Ford Focus)

"Cheap to buy, $16,500 after tax credits and paying NC taxes and fees. Cheap to drive. $3.12 worth of electricity to drive 100 miles, if I paid for all of it at my home rate. Work picks up almost half and free public charging another 10%. Scheduled maintenance is just tire rotation and cabin air filter changes. I don't know how you beat the value."

P L F., NC (2016 Ford Focus)

"My lease was way overpriced"

Anonymous, VA (2016 Ford Focus)

"Ford was running massive incentives when I bought this car. As such we paid only $25,500 for a fully loaded Focus ST (ST3 trim). The speed, ride, comfort and sound system you get for the money is so much better then any other car on the market at this price. Had I paid full price at 30k+ it might not be the same story, but that is the great thing about Ford ... if you get your timing right you can get an amazing deal."

RICHARD G., OR (2016 Ford Focus)

"Paid MSRP ; many other dealers were charging a premium"

PAUL M., PA (2016 Ford Focus)

"Good value"

Anonymous, CT (2016 Ford Focus)

SCOTT H., WA (2016 Ford Focus)

"I should have done more shopping before buying. It cost an additional 2500 for a five year extended warranty which would have been part of the package with a Hyundai. Also a few weeks after ppurchasing, the dealer lowered the prices of this model by a few thousand dollars. Call it buyer's remorse, but I woudl oot go back there again."

BRUCE J., NM (2016 Ford Focus)

"If you purchase a Focus ST, you get incredible performance for the money. Very quick, with outstanding grip. Lots of tech for the money as well."

LUKE W., SC (2016 Ford Focus)

"Ford gave an additional $1000 credit to veterans"

Anonymous, MD (2016 Ford Focus)
