Sporty handling, relatively low noise, and a well-done interior make the Focus feel more like a small sports sedan than a humdrum compact. Though not blazingly fast, the Focus does get good fuel economy: We recorded 29 mpg overall in our tests for both the four-cylinder and three-cylinder turbo. Several flaws keep it from being one of our top-rated small cars, though.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"Erratic acceleration with hesitation and/or jerky reaction to throttle input from a stop; told by dealer the condition would improve as the car "learned" our driving style; condition has not improved. Looking into the auto trans design, it has dual clutches like a manual trans but with computerized gear selection instead of manual shifter. I thought I was getting an automatic trans with eventual smooth performance. Our past 2002 and 2009 Focus' were good cars but this one has soured my..."

"Very good handling. Smooth acceleration through the gears."

"Very smooth acceleration through the gears"

Anonymous, NH (2017 Ford Focus)

"The acceleration is very quick for the size of the car. It also handles very well cornering with little body roll. Under braking you do not notice any sort of dive at the front."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Ford Focus)

"peppy and handles well"

Anonymous, FL (2017 Ford Focus)

"the car is very quiet when the engine is running. it has good acceleration, braking and the mirrors on each side have a blind spot helper which help on highway driving."

William C., PA (2017 Ford Focus)

"Good acceleration (don'tmakejack-rabbitstgarts), holds speed with cruise control, gets good mileage, haven't had trouble in snow despite FW-only drive. Handles well on curves, and is stable on straight-aways."

E M., WY (2017 Ford Focus)

"acceleration and handling is fine. Braking is mediocre and there are no anti-lock brakes or automatic emergency brakes"

Anonymous, CA (2017 Ford Focus)

"The RS is an awesome experience. The steering is responsive, the engine has all the power you need (and then some) right when you need it, and it's just plain fun!"

Bonnie W., MI (2017 Ford Focus)

"Very nimble plus its small size makes it easy in parking lots."

Kenneth M., FL (2017 Ford Focus)

"Acceleration is poor. Handling is good."

Joseph L., NJ (2017 Ford Focus)

"This car does not accelerate well when I first enter a highway."

Anonymous, NM (2017 Ford Focus)

"Acceleratinng out of a curve is fun! Passing from 55 mph to 70 with the turbo is very quick!"

Robert I., PA (2017 Ford Focus)

"Excellent steering but the dual clutch transmission is too much dialed for fuel economy"

Christophe M., MD (2017 Ford Focus)

"will not deaccelerate when foot off pedal"

Tony J., TX (2017 Ford Focus)

"Zippy"

Anonymous, CA (2017 Ford Focus)

"The 2.0 Ecoboost engine is great, lots of power and 28 mpg in normal driving."

Christopher T., CT (2017 Ford Focus)

"Handles very well in getting out into heavy traffic, acceleration excellent, smooth handling"

Sandra P., OH (2017 Ford Focus)

"The steering is precise. The acceleration is excellent. It handles bumps in the road incredibly smoothly for a small car."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Ford Focus)

"This car rocks"

Anonymous, TX (2017 Ford Focus)

"Smooth acceleration/torque of electric motors. Quietness. Negatives are terrible turn radius; not enough battery life and not enough power."

David G., NC (2017 Ford Focus)

"Great pickup even on steep hills. Corners well handles like a sports car. This is the ST version."

Gordon P., WV (2017 Ford Focus)

"Accelerate like a scalded rabbit and handles amazing."

William M., DE (2017 Ford Focus)

"I have the ST model and I absolutely love it. The manual transmission shifter is solid with throws on the short side. There's some turbo lag, especially in higher gears, but that's to be expected. Driving this car in Oakland and San Fransisco is incredibly fun as it's the perfect size for small city streets while still having enough power."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Ford Focus)

"The ride is very stiff, but not punishing for my nearly 60 year old body. The handling is amazing for a front wheel drive car, and turbo engine is very quick on the boost. It has so much torque you can short shift it and still accelerate quickly. The economy is surprisingly good; over my first 7500 miles I'm averaging 29.8 mpg in all driving. I am not a fan of all black interiors, but there's no other choice if you want all leather heated seats. I wish there was a lighter or brighter color option for the interior--medium gray or something similar. But the seats are comfortable, and despite the tight rear legroom, the four door hatchback makes it very versatile. With Ford all but abandoning the car market in the US, I'm glad I bought the ST. I've owned and driven a stick shift Fords for 40 years, and I"m saddened that this might be my last--not by choice, but by lack of choice. Ford will be scrambling the next time gas prices spike and the driving public abandons their SUVs, CUVs, and trucks for cars that get far better mileage."

David W., MA (2017 Ford Focus)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Interior very comfortable. Outside noise level excellent"

Sandra P., OH (2017 Ford Focus)

"It is pretty much what i expected."

Edward S., MI (2017 Ford Focus)

"leather seats are very comfortable; the noise is almost nonexistent; the ride is very comfortable"

Anonymous, UT (2017 Ford Focus)

"We recently drove this Focus on a trip totaling 1200 miles in 3 days. It was surprising comfortable. The seating and driving position were just right, so I was never fatigued or sore. The car is quiet enough to hear an audiobook without having it overly loud and conversation was easy. The ride is a little hard on rough roads, but nothing that upset the car. On smoother roads and at highways speeds, the car was stable, calm, and comfortable."

David K., NC (2017 Ford Focus)

"Seats ver comfortable. Performance handling, great acceleration"

Gordon P., WV (2017 Ford Focus)

"The car is quite comfortable, except for the head rests. I am short and because the head rests curve forward, my entire body curves forward and down if I have the head rests in the recommended position for safety. This is extremely uncomfortable, so I end up positioning the head rests as high as they will go although this will do me no good in an accident."

Anonymous, NM (2017 Ford Focus)

"The ST's Recaro seats are very supportive, I love the adjustable lumbar, but you have to climb in and out of the seats."

Christopher T., CT (2017 Ford Focus)

"Excellent seating situation, the noise level is a little high requiring talking louder while driving, and the ride acceleration is sluggish."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Ford Focus)

"Primary driver is female of small stature and fully satisfied Male passenger is disatisfied due to cramped seating, and minimal space for feet (passenger is 5ft 10, 170 pounds"

Anonymous, OR (2017 Ford Focus)

"RS Recaro seats are great support and comfort"

William M., DE (2017 Ford Focus)

"Not very comfortable except on short rides. Wind noise is too hugh while driving on a highway"

Joseph L., NJ (2017 Ford Focus)

"seats too small road noise bad"

Tony J., TX (2017 Ford Focus)

"This car has had an annoying rattle since new that the dealer has ben unable to fix."

Anonymous, MI (2017 Ford Focus)

"Quiet, comfortable, adjustable"

Sandra P., OH (2017 Ford Focus)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"Very good deal 10k below mrsp"

Christophe M., MD (2017 Ford Focus)

"Considering this is the lowest level Focus made and that we made a great deal in the purchase, I see us having this car for a long time. It is comfortable, gets over 45 mpg on the highway, and has all the basic amenities, we are happy with the car and feel it will pay for itself in about 3 years. I only wish it had cruise control."

David K., NC (2017 Ford Focus)

"The car continues to operates like the 1st day driven off the dealer parking lot."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Ford Focus)

"My vehicle with the SEL trim level has outstanding features is every area. The Sync3 system is above average and the ride and handling is noteworthy as well."

Anonymous, MD (2017 Ford Focus)

"Nice car. Drives and handles like a dream. Gets great gas mileage. Was inexpensive. But Ford should have spend a little more money to build it with a traditional automatic transmission that would be reliable."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Ford Focus)

"$5000 rebate closed the deal."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Ford Focus)

"I bought my 2017 Focus ST in March 2018 as a leftover model. Since I keep my cars for a long time it didn't matter to me that I was driving a car that was already a model year old. I purchased the ST3 trim that comes fully loaded with everything Ford offers in an ST. The sticker was north of $32,000 but I got this car for a little over $25,400--a good deal in my book."

David W., MA (2017 Ford Focus)

"Plug in Hybrid on 210 charger with solar panels on home's roof. Use for short trips gets 22 miles on battery, rarely uses gas engine. Use about a gallon of gas a month. Riding on the sun, very satisfactory!"

R L., CO (2017 Ford Focus)

"At least a 2017 and got a super bargain"

Anonymous, CA (2017 Ford Focus)

"I felt that I got a new vehicle for a few thousand dollars more than the used vehicles that I had been shopping for."

William G., MI (2017 Ford Focus)

"The ST is a great drving experience"

Robert I., PA (2017 Ford Focus)

"This vehicle was heavily discounted, making it an attractive buy. Buyer also included full maintenance and consumable parts replacement at no charge. The additional cost was considered acceptable by buyer."

Anonymous, OR (2017 Ford Focus)

"Same as the 2014, it is a good combination of good mileage, driving comfort, styling and reliability at a reasonable price."

Thomas H., IN (2017 Ford Focus)

"The service that i have received has been excellent."

Edward S., MI (2017 Ford Focus)

"Excellent vehicle as to driving and the safety features"

David C., AZ (2017 Ford Focus)

"If you want a Focus with a manual transmission and some of the higher end features like leather, navigation, and a good stereo, the ST is your only option. This is my second Focus (the first a 2013 SE with 5-speed manual) with a manual gearbox, and I never had any problems with the clutch or transmission unlike so many other who chose the automated 6-speed transmission."
