The Fusion ranks among the better family sedans of its time. The 2010 update is extensive and rectifies the road noise and turning circle shortcomings of the original car. The V6 engine is still responsive and gets good fuel economy. Ride and handling remain competent and stability control is now standard. Interior fit and finish has improved. Rear-seat room is acceptable but falls a bit short compared with the competition.

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"Blew warm air"

Anonymous, WV (2011 Ford Fusion SEL 3.0-L V6)

"The air conditioning stopped working and I had to have the a/c compressor replaced. This was very expensive to me and I had to take it back in twice because it still wasn't getting cold."

Anonymous, OK (2011 Ford Fusion 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Temperature sensor failed, not allowing the compressor to engage"

Brian C., WV (2011 Ford Fusion Sport 3.0-L V6)

"Air conditioner stopped cooling; new car dealer from whom we had purchased the car (who does not normally sell/service Fords, but who also owns a Ford dealership where they said they would send it if needed) replaced compressor, but that wasn't the issue. Paid and got the car back, and air conditioning wasn't fixed. Internet research on our part revealed an inexpensive sensor was likely responsible. The dealer ultimately took it to their Ford dealership, where the sensor was replaced. At that point, air conditioning worked OK, but we refused to pay the additional cost of repairs that (A) hadn't initially fixed the problem and (B) required that the real repair be done. We settled for what we had already paid -- which amounted to approx. dealer's cost for the new compressor we hadn't needed (but now we have a new one) plus internet-based average cost of labor to replace the faulty sensor."

Anonymous, NY (2011 Ford Fusion SEL 3.5-L V6)
Automatic climate control

"All of the problems were with the A/C system starting with a failed evporator sensor and a leaking low side fill valve. I also suspect the the mechanic caused the failed valve and released additional refrigerant. The electrical problem was due to sq"

Gregory C., FL (2011 Ford Fusion Sport 3.5-L V6)

"Ac or vent goes to full hot"

Anonymous, NC (2011 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Sensor failure caused A/C system to blow hot air. First failure caused a sensor to be replaced costing $700+ due to heavy labor costs. 3 months later, a second failure with another sensor cost over $800 that again had heavy labor costs due to teardown labor costs of the dashboard. No one was smart enough to figure that if one sensor was being replaced that all the sensors should be replaced to avoid the repeated heavy labor costs for a $25 sensor."

Robert M., FL (2011 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Had to replace three parts to different times"

David P., MO (2011 Ford Fusion SEL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Twice in the past 12 months there was a sensor that failed in this control system that caused 2 repairs bills of over $700 each. New sensor under $100 but $600+ to rip the dash board apart to get at it. BAD engineering by Ford."

Robert M., FL (2011 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Blend door control malfunction. Full heat unable to control."

Anonymous, FL (2011 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Blower (fan) motor

"Electrical short in relay to fan motor destroyed the motor and some other wiring"

Anonymous, MS (2011 Ford Fusion SEL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Blower fan wiring on this car is out of spec for the amount of current the fan can pull at full speed. This caused the wiring and the blower motor resistor to melt. I had to splice in new wire and purchase a new resistor for $140"

Anonymous, (2011 Ford Fusion SEL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The fan motor stopped working and caused the wiring harness to malfunction as well. This is the second time that this has occurred"

Anonymous, OH (2011 Ford Fusion SEL 3.0-L V6)

"poorly designed parts that break down frequently and must be replaced at a high cost"

Anonymous, OH (2011 Ford Fusion SEL 3.0-L V6)

Anonymous, MD (2011 Ford Fusion SEL 3.0-L V6)

"Stopped working"

Anonymous, MI (2011 Ford Fusion Sport 3.5-L V6)

"Blower ceased working for 3 months. Started working on it's own again"

David M., MS (2011 Ford Fusion SEL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Blower motor either stops operating completely or intermittently. This is the fourth repair. Only the first failure was covered under warranty. So far the resistor was replaced twice, the blower motor once, and some related module once. Each time I brought it to the dealer and requested to have it covered, but in a whack-a-mole like fashion they claimed it was a different failure each time costing on average $200-$400 for each repair. Steady revenue I guess. Also wrote NHTSA and Ford about this issue as it seems to be a common issue. The database lists hundreds of related complaints."

Jason W., PA (2011 Ford Fusion Sport 3.5-L V6)

"Electrical connector to blower motor burned up causing intermittent failures. After research on internet, found it is a common problem that the connectors overheat and need to be replaced."

Brock K., UT (2011 Ford Fusion Sport 3.5-L V6)

"blower motor squeaks and whistles on fan speed 1 and 2"

Steve M., PA (2011 Ford Fusion SE 3.5-L V6)
Condenser

"Given my online research of the problem, it is a flaw in several years of Fusions. As I understand it, the temperature control fails causing the unit to freeze, as in overcool, which prevents the blower from being able to blow cold air. As a result, the blower blows hot air, very uncomfortable in temps above 80. The repair is expensive, $300, and took multiple visits to correct (and multiple repair costs for things that weren’t the actual problem). On the upside, my car now gets better gas mileage. Go figure..."

Amanda P., GA (2011 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"the condenser was ruined by a leak in the compressor, or maybe the other way around. in any case, it stopped working and is too expensive to fix. totally upset at the poor quality of the parts."

Anonymous, CT (2011 Ford Fusion Sport 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Evaporator

"I was told that other people have had the same evaporator problem with Fusions. It was expensive since the instrument panel had to be removed - about three hours of labor to get to the evaporator. I also had a problem with the blend doors which caused the AC to become hot after a few miles."

T W., TX (2011 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I think it is the evaporator control that caused the temp sensor to fail."

Amanda P., GA (2011 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Heater system

"Control unit for heating/cooling system failed. Full heat stayed on 100% of the time. Required that the control unit be replaced"

Anonymous, NC (2011 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Heating element went out in the back window. Had to replace the entire window."

Anonymous, OH (2011 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Refrigerant leaks

"The A/C stopped cooling strongly in summer 2019. In the fall the refrigerant was recharged but no leak was identified. Dye was added to the system to help[ find the leak. Now in April 2020 it is not cooling again and there is louder noise from under the hood when the A/C is turned on. I suspect the compressor is bad but I have not yet taken it in to have it diagnosed and repaired."

Anonymous, OH (2011 Ford Fusion Sport 3.5-L V6)

"pipe/tube broke; had to be replaced"

Anonymous, IL (2011 Ford Fusion SEL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"In July, 2017, my air conditioning began operating erratically. It would work at times, but at other times it would generate only heated air. I took the car to my Ford dealership where they recharged the system with new refrigerant. Over the next two weeks it continued to operate erratically. I returned to the Ford dealership where they checked the system again and determined that the problem actually required calibrating and updating the HVAC module. Once that was done, the problem was solved and it has not caused any further issues."

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

12V power plug

"The fuse blew"

Philip G., OH (2011 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Power plug (cigarette lighter) pulled out of the console, trailing wires behind it, when we tried to un-plug free-standing GPS unit. Local garage said they repaired it (and we paid them for the job), but they hadn't properly repaid it. It still pulled out of the console when we un-plugged the GPS unit. We eventually had it evaluated at a Ford dealer, who ordered a retaining ring. First trip was to identify the problem. It took a second, 45-minute trip to the dealer to have the part installed after they special-ordered the part. After this repair, it has been working OK."

Other/unsure

"While the Sync system has stabilized vs. it's initial hopeless failures, I still have occasional problems getting it to recognize an IPod. I just wait for it to correct itself now, as opposed t having to take it to a dealer like I used to"

Doug F., CA (2011 Ford Fusion SEL 3.0-L V6)

"Constantly looses connection with the phone. Sync freezes up, and makes the phone unUSble. The only way to reset the system is to remove the fuse from the fuse box"

Anonymous, MN (2011 Ford Fusion Hybrid 2.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"SYNC was erratic and unreliable. Sometimes navigation was off"

Anonymous, WA (2011 Ford Fusion Hybrid 2.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Basically doesn't work"

A M., VA (2011 Ford Fusion SEL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Operator instructions for Synch are so poorly written that I'd have to describe them as obfuscated. There are multiple contradictions, absurdly confusing directions, and grossly unnecessary technical language"

Anonymous, OH (2011 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"CD was stuck in the CD player disabling the entire SYNC system. However, we didn't know it was a CD until they disassembled the dash, pulled the SYNC system and discovered the CD. Now fully functional. Covered by extended warranty (100 deductible)"
