Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2012 Ford Fusion owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Antilock system (ABS)

"During cold weather of -3 deg F, all power assisted brake features failed. It took three trips to the dealer ship to get repaired . I wrote three incident reports to NHTSA"

Anonymous, MI (2012 Ford Fusion Hybrid 2.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Calipers

"Stuck rear calipers needed replacement"

Jeffrey K., IL (2012 Ford Fusion S 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Corrosion prevented complete retraction of rear piston causing pad and rotor wear."

Anonymous, NH (2012 Ford Fusion SEL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Caliper failed after 75000 miles. This seemed premature failure!"

D D., NY (2012 Ford Fusion SEL 3.0-L V6)

"I had to replace all of the calipers two years in a row. This is uncommon."

Donald G., IL (2012 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Rear caliper stuck closed causing premature break wear on rear brakes."

J B., NY (2012 Ford Fusion Sport 3.5-L V6)

"The technicians had a problem identifying the issue until it became very noisy and the wheel was hot to the touch. The mechanic identified it immediately, told me it was too dangerous to drive. It was then repaired within a day."

Anonymous, OH (2012 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"they were worn out and the repair shop initially did the repair incorrectly"

Timothy M., NY (2012 Ford Fusion SEL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The rear driver's side caliper started sticking inexplicably, but I was able to free it, and it has not been an issue since."

Anonymous, MD (2012 Ford Fusion SEL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Calipers seized. The vehichle had bee checked within 500 km and no concern was identified"

Anonymous, ON (2012 Ford Fusion SEL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"calipers failed (sticking), resulting in noise and total wear of the break pads and rotors"

Anonymous, BC (2012 Ford Fusion SEL 3.0-L V6)
Master cylinder

"Brakes were not working correctly. Replaced at a cost of parts and labor of just over $3000"

Alec M., FL (2012 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Normal routine brake wear

"Car had enough miles that rear brakes needed replacing. Fronts had been replaced before I bought it."

Anonymous, MN (2012 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Normal brake wear as previously detected on oil change."

Anonymous, IL (2012 Ford Fusion SEL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Rear Brake pads needed to be replace due to normal wear."

Anonymous, WA (2012 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"just normal wear and tear needed replacement"

Anonymous, WI (2012 Ford Fusion)
Parking brake

"When the outside temperature is below freezing, the parking brake on the right rear wheel becomes frozen and does not release when the parking brake lever is disengaged. I can’t put the vehicle in motion easily from a cold start. After a few minutes to warm up, the brake frees up, allowing the wheel to turn. The dealer solution was to replace the parking brake drums on each wheel. They did not replace the cables leading from the parking brake lever to the wheels, which I think is the problem. My current workaround is to not engage the parking brake when the weather forecast is freezing temperatures for the next morning."

Frank Y., MO (2012 Ford Fusion SEL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Just like the steering box freezing in fridge weather, water in the steering box, the parking brake freezes in sub freezing weather."

Robert F., PA (2012 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Caliper for parking brake froze open and parking brake cable broke."

Anonymous, NY (2012 Ford Fusion SEL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Premature brake wear

"Replaced rear pads and rotors at 60000 km., consider ths premature as I drive attempting to use brakes to a minimum"

David G., ON (2012 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Rear brake pads completely wore out"

D D., NY (2012 Ford Fusion SEL 3.0-L V6)

"See previous comments"

Anonymous, CA (2012 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Had a bad brake caliper right rear"

Alan L., NH (2012 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"brakes sent seem to last"

Anonymous, ON (2012 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Sudden rotor failure on front drivers side and some damage to caliper. Passenger side was replaced as a safety measure."

Anonymous, VA (2012 Ford Fusion SE 3.0-L V6)

"The brakes actually failed; the left rear brake engaged after I used the parking brake and would not release. It happened multiple times. Thankfully I was able to get it to release and drive after a time, but it was actually dragging the back tire. The service stated water had gotten into the brake system in the back causing it to fail and lock on. They had to replace the whole brake assembly on both sides."

Valerie P., ID (2012 Ford Fusion SE 3.0-L V6)

"noisy rear brakes (recently rebuilt)"

Bruce C., ON (2012 Ford Fusion SEL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"See caliper problem."

Anonymous, NH (2012 Ford Fusion SEL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"significant noise from rear brakes and wear issues required replacement of most components, however front brakes were fine with only moderate wear."

Anonymous, MI (2012 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"According to my mechanic stuck calipers are a common problem on Ford Fusions. You would think they would know how to make brakes by now."

J B., NY (2012 Ford Fusion Sport 3.5-L V6)

"Had to replace breaks"

Angel O., MA (2012 Ford Fusion S 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Duane S., IA (2012 Ford Fusion SEL 3.5-L V6)
Squeaking

"It has a what I would call a winning noise that sounds like a power steering pump or belt but when checked no one seems to be able to figure out what it is or where it is coming from"

Ronald W., MA (2012 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The squeaking was related to the brakes locking. Prior to complete locking they were squeaking and making noises. I thought since it was snowy and muddy it was simply dirty, but the brakes were about to completely fail; it was really a warning."

Valerie P., ID (2012 Ford Fusion SE 3.0-L V6)

"More of a shuddering. Especially when braking from highway speeds. Have not been able to determine the cause"

David J., NC (2012 Ford Fusion SEL 3.0-L V6)

"When you press hard on brakes it makes a pedal noise"

Joseph D., ON (2012 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"It stopped working"

Marilyn G., FL (2012 Ford Fusion)

"compressor started making whining problems. Took it in to the dealer and had compressor replaced. Next day the compressor made noise again. They replaced the compressor again. Then again the next day it also failed to produce cool air. Thjey replaced compressor again and then found that the evaporator had considerable moisture in it,so the evaporator was replaced along with the compressor and since then it has worked normally"

"2012 Blend Door Air-conditioning problem."

Anonymous, MO (2012 Ford Fusion SE 3.0-L V6)

"A/C would be working fine, but then start blowing hot air. It was a known problem by Ford, and it took four months to finally get the part needed to repair the problem. It was an intermittent problem which unfortunately occured during the summer"

Hal S., FL (2012 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Cold air would cut out"

Anonymous, ON (2012 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Automatic climate control

"A/C blowing hot air"

C G., AZ (2012 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"There is a part that has a history of feeling in the Ford fusion. It makes the heater go full blast and negates the use of the air-conditioner. If you use the air conditioner only the hottest of air will come out. This is about $1000 fix which has been going on long before your report on the 2012 fusion"

Anonymous, CA (2012 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The air conditioning quit working. A $30 part needed replacing. This required removing the entire dashboard. The air conditioning still didn't work and another part had to be replaced after removing the entire dashboard. $1700."

Anonymous, MN (2012 Ford Fusion S 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The 2012 Ford Fusion is among those models experiencing blend door problems."

Anonymous, MO (2012 Ford Fusion SE 3.0-L V6)

"sensor failure causes AC to blow hot intermitantly without warning. Repair is expensive due to location (remove dash!). Local dealer unwilling to fix and stalled until 12K warranty expired. Bad feelings, will not buy another ford car (I like the tr"

Carl Y., GA (2012 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Hot air blowing out the dashboard vents when the system is not turned on"

Peter S., AZ (2012 Ford Fusion Hybrid 2.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"A/C would switch to heat by itself"

Bruce N., MA (2012 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"vent system has a gargling water sound combined with a clicking fan noise. Dealer was aware of it and provided a fix. Fix made the issue worse and needs to return to the dealer again"

Jason O., AB (2012 Ford Fusion SEL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Blower (fan) motor

"The blower fan motor makes a constant squeeling sound. I have purchased an OEM replacement and the replacement does the same exact thing. I guess there is no option to fix this very annoying issue"

Corbin L., CT (2012 Ford Fusion SEL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Wiring and blower motor shorted out twice."

Anonymous, KY (2012 Ford Fusion SE 3.0-L V6)

"Fan motor replaced under warranty in January 2019, has recently started making bad noise June 2019."

Dean S., VA (2012 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Blower fan replaced under warranty. Failed again six months later."

Dean S., VA (2012 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I had the motor replaced once already, under warranty. At that time it make a horrible loud ticking noise and would only stop when I shut off the whole system. The replacement motor makes a low tick noise and will stop when I turn up the fan speed"

Anonymous, MO (2012 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The blower motor stopped working. When repaired, it turned out the dealer had to replace an electrical relay. The total cost was over $400, and the same repair had been done a year before"

Anonymous, WI (2012 Ford Fusion SEL 3.0-L V6)

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Ball joints

"Lower left ball joint began making lots of noise. Could not feel it in steering wheel. First time in 60 years of owning cars that I had to replace a ball joint"

Anonymous, IL (2012 Ford Fusion SEL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I lost steering power which required increased effort to control the vehicle. Problem was with rack mounted electric power assisted steering and fix/replacement was covered under my warrenty"

Anonymous, MD (2012 Ford Fusion SEL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Power steering pumps and hoses

"reprogrammed power steering module, replaced power steering gear. This issue is related to the sticking steering at slow speeds It was stated that Ford "may" send out another recall for the control arms and bushings to fix the sticking steering"

Anonymous, VA (2012 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Car no longer uses power steering pump and uses an electronic motor to steer the car instead. Power steering module failed and cost $1700 to fix. Part alone is $1100 and only available from Ford. 8 hours labor because it required taking apart the entire steering column assembly. Dealer would have charged $500 to $700 more. Several Fusions are under recall for this issue but mine was not covered because it was assembled outside of the date range of the recalled vehicles. Many other people affected like me can be found on the internet. Ford needs to own up to this or be subject to a class action lawsuit like it was for a 1997 intake manifold issue it chose to cover for some but not all. Had a 2006 that we regret trading in and my daughter has a 2009 that has been great. Can't believe Ford would ruin such a great car."

James A., FL (2012 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Power steering pump sprung a sudden leak. Just managed to get it to a gas station before steering was gone entirely."

Anonymous, MD (2012 Ford Fusion SEL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"power steering failed at 49000 kilometres and was replaced on warrenty"

Anonymous, MB (2012 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"HAD TO BE REPLACED AT 45000 MILES FOR $1300"

Anonymous, NE (2012 Ford Fusion SEL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"multiple times, the power steering quit working during a turn in traffic"

Louise S., GA (2012 Ford Fusion SE)
Shocks or struts

"Front struts replaced with Monroe quick-struts. Had severe clunking in front end. Ford techs tore the whole front end apart, eventually taking the strut assemblies off a "12 Fusion with similar mileage. Clunking gone. Replaced with OEM struts. Constant rattling no longer present, but now has extremely harsh ride and front end is still very noisy over bumps. They replaced a worn suspension arm on L front and L rear suspension saying they were unusually worn. Now I hear clunking in rear over smal"

Donald A., CA (2012 Ford Fusion SEL 3.0-L V6)

"EXPENSIVE to replace!!"

Christopher T., WA (2012 Ford Fusion SEL 3.0-L V6)

"Rear shocks required replacement at 70K miles. They went out without any notice, and in the span of about two months."

Anonymous, WA (2012 Ford Fusion SE 3.0-L V6)
Springs or torsion bars

"Broken spring 6 months old. Replaced under warranty"

Anonymous, ON (2012 Ford Fusion SEL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Steering linkage (includes rack and pinion)

"reprogrammed and replaced and still did not fix the problem of sticking steering at slow speeds"

Anonymous, VA (2012 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Sudden and complete loss of power steering because of faulty rack and pinion. Issue was known to Ford and a recall was issued by Transport Canada. Recall covered vehicles built on or before February 28, 2012. Mine was built early in March, 2012 in the same plant using the same rack and pinion. Ford would not cover the repair even though the dealership service facility determined the problem was the same as those built before March. Cost me over $1700.00. I complained directly to Ford Customer Service. Their reply was that we only cover recalls ordered by Transport Canada and mine was not included because of the build date."

John M., NB (2012 Ford Fusion SEL 3.0-L V6)

"There is a recall on the steering gear in the rack and pinion. I took it to Jim Click Ford and they agreed that was causing the popping sound. Ford would not honor their extended warranty under this recall and the matter is being investigated by the NHTSA."

Anonymous, AZ (2012 Ford Fusion S 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"the steering system would get hard to operate. The electronic power steering system was bad."

Scott M., PA (2012 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"This car has electric steering. The main box had to be replaced at a cost of over 1000. I understand that thee is a secret warranty and that this is a known defect."

Anonymous, CA (2012 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"At roughly 73K miles, due to a noise that occurred during turning at low speeds, I had to have the upper and lower steering arms replaced on both the driver and passenger sides."

David M., WA (2012 Ford Fusion SE 3.0-L V6)

"The power steering went out and caused an accident"

J S., CA (2012 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

J S., CA (2012 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Wheel bearings

"Premature bearing failure on the left rear wheel hub. Car starting making a warbling sound and prematurely worn out the tire. Had to replace hub and bearing plus rotor and break pads on both sides"

David J., NC (2012 Ford Fusion SEL 3.0-L V6)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Coolers and lines

"water pump broke on the interstate, loss of coolant, engine overheating, loss of power, had to pull off the highway and get towed several miles to a Ford dealership, was the weekend so had to stay at a motel 2 nights, Ford dealership in Orangeburg S.C. fixed it well and in a timely manner on a Mon. so was able to continue trip to Charleston S.C."

Anonymous, OH (2012 Ford Fusion 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
