In a class generally known for bland styling and a lack of driving excitement, the Ford Fusion is like a fresh, charismatic newcomer. But also like some promising and talented celebrities, it has just enough quirks to erode your enthusiasm. The Fusion looks upscale and stylish and handles like a really good European sports sedan. We bought three versions: a top-trim Titanium, a mid-trim SE, and the SE Hybrid.

Performance
Acceleration Acceleration Acceleration tests are conducted on a smooth, flat pavement straightaway at the track. Time, speed, and distance measurements are taken with a precise GPS-based device that’s hooked to a data-logging computer.
0 to 60 mph 0 to 60 mph (sec.) The time in seconds that a vehicle takes to reach 60 mph from a standstill with the engine idling.
Transmission Transmission Transmission performance is determined by shifting smoothness, response, shifter action, and clutch actuation for manual transmissions.
Fuel Economy Fuel Economy We perform our own fuel-economy tests, independent of the government's often-quoted EPA figures and the manufacturers' claims. Using a precise fuel-flow measuring device spliced into the fuel line, we run two separate circuits to represent city and highway consumption.
CR's Overall Mileage CR's Overall Mileage CR's overall mileage is a composite of measured fuel usage on a prescribed city course and highway cruising; and CR's 150-mile test trip of mixed driving, if tested. In recent road tests, we've discontinued the 150-mile trip test.
CR's City Mileage CR's City Mileage Measured fuel usage on a prescribed city course.
CR's Highway Mileage CR's Highway Mileage Measured fuel usage on a prescribed highway cruising.
Annual Fuel Cost Annual Fuel Cost The cost and amount of fuel used in 12,000 miles and is calculated from CR's overall mileage.
Braking Braking The braking rating is a composite of wet and dry stopping distances and pedal feel. Braking distance is from 60 mph, with no wheels locked.

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Satisfaction Owner Satisfaction To learn about satisfaction, CR has collected survey data from our annual survey on more than half a million vehicles. Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

All versions provide a composed, civilized ride that's as good as cars costing twice as much. The cabin is blessedly quiet. The Titanium version is among the best-handling midsized sedans we've tested. The Hybrid model posted among the best fuel economy we've measured in a midsized sedan: 39 mpg overall. A plug-in version is also available.

“The traffic feature does not work even with the proper subscription to the service”

Anonymous, ON (2015 Ford Fusion SE 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

“Error message from the Card”

Anonymous, NE (2015 Ford Fusion SE Hybrid 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

“BLUETOOTH: PEOPLE DO NOT HERE ME AT TIMES. VOICE CONTROL DOES NOT HEAR OR UNDERSTAND ME AT TIMES”

Steve S., AZ (2015 Ford Fusion SE Hybrid 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

“The system does not accurately recognize voice commands. An update did not help. Will be taking it in for warranty service soon”

Anonymous, OR (2015 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Backup or other camera/sensors

“When I put car in reverse the screen would become scrambled and wave”

Anonymous, TN (2015 Ford Fusion S 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, IL (2015 Ford Fusion Titanium 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Rough shifting

“Stutter, clunk, hard shift, jerk when accelerator is firmly depressed”

Bruce C., NY (2015 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“When accelerating quickly the shift points are too long between gears. When traveling the trans has a bad habit not wanting to go into 4th or 5th smoothly when speeding up”

Anonymous, SC (2015 Ford Fusion S 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“This trans is very slow to respond, easily confused if you accelerate quickly then release, will get hung up in the last gear and not move to the next. When traveling after a period of time I go to accelerate when it comes out of 6th gear there is a loud bang. Most of these issues have been addressed with now a trans that shifts a bit better but still far from my expectations. If you're one of these drivers that never gets over 60 then these issues are not noticed”

A N., SC (2015 Ford Fusion S 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Clutch adjustment

“making the shift smother”

Anonymous, VA (2015 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Transmission sensor or solenoid

“All the solenoids have been replaced which helped with the shifting, but did not cure the VERY slow response of this trans. Also 3rd gear still hesitates (sticks) going into 4th unless I'm accelerating very slowly”

A N., SC (2015 Ford Fusion S 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Difficult to fill up gas tank

“This was a problem with the Power Control Module that went out....it kept telling me there was a problem with the Fuel Filler Inlet, when there wasn't”

Anonymous, IL (2015 Ford Fusion SE Hybrid 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Engine computer

“The Power Control Module went out. They replaced it with a refurbished one that also did not work. Then replaced with a new part that has worked fine since. This took 5 weeks to complete”

Anonymous, IL (2015 Ford Fusion SE Hybrid 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

“!.5 liter engine auto stop/start needs repair”

James K., FL (2015 Ford Fusion SE 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Windows

“Replaced windshield due to factory defects (Visual Aberrations)”

Mark Z., FL (2015 Ford Fusion SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

What Owners Say

Cylinder head

“At around 14000 miles, an intake valve guide dropped. The valve hit the guide and broke pieces off of it, that then went into the cylinder. That head was replaced with a new one. While the tech was on an extended test drive (9 miles) to insure everything was OK, another intake valve guide dropped on a different cylinder!! This time, the pieces damaged the piston and cylinder wall! The engine assembly was then replaced. The car was out of service for about 6- 7 weeks during the first 18 month”

Anonymous, CA (2015 Ford Fusion Unsure 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Engine rebuild or replacement

“The engine was replaced due to bottom end damage as the result of having a valve guide drop and pieces went into the cylinder. Initially the gas miles was way down; about 5 mpg less than usual, driving over the same road and conditions as before.
