Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for over 300,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2021 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, clutch replacement.

What Owners Say

Clutch replacement

"At the beginning of a cross country trip as I was leaving my home state (CA) I felt an unusual shudder and attributed it to breaking tire traction. In Arizona I went to pass a big rig, down shifted and applied throttle. Upon doing so I saw my tachometer rise while the speedometer remained the same. Being I was on a car club trip I had to carefully continue until I reached our destination nearly 2500 miles away in NC. Ford motor company was aware of a defect in Mustang/Shelby GT500 clutches with many failing before the 17,000 where mine begun to fail. I had club members that had Ford replace their clutches and when I took mine to the dealer whom always serviced mine since purchase with about 5,500 miles I was told that mine showed none of the signs mentioned in the service advisory and would not be replaced. I had it serviced just before the trip and had mentioned to the dealer that I was having trouble (on occasion, not always) with shudder and gear engagemnent and was once again told there wasn't a problem. Less than 800 miles later the clutch failed. I would guess that I had a 500 horsepower motor and a 150 horsepower clutch which I was able to limp to a AAMCO transmission shop in Concord NC for a complete replacement with a McLeod clutch and flywheel package drop shipped from American Muscle. I just completed that same trip today and had no issues with this clutch. I was very disappointed with Ford over this issue but still love my Shelby which has been bullet proof other than this clutch issue."

Kevin W., CA (2008 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 5.4-L V8 supercharged)

"Moving to a small town with too many stop lights killed my clutch. The WORST was the Ford dealer service person treating me like someone (woman!) who didn't know how to drive a clutch. Infuriating. And last time I went to the dealer"

Anonymous, PA (2008 Ford Mustang Base 4.0-L V6)

"This is an acknowledged fault by the Ford Motor company"

Anonymous, NJ (2008 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 5.4-L V8 supercharged)

"clutch was slipping needed to be replaced"

Walter H., MD (2008 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 5.4-L V8 supercharged)

"The clutch had issues since purchase such as chatter and noise, Ford has a service bulletin. On cross country trip just taken clutch began slipping on medium to hard acceleration and I had to get it replaced in North Carolina(live in CA.) Ford Shelby Mustangs are known to have this issue."

Kevin W., CA (2008 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 5.4-L V8 supercharged)
Transmission rebuild or replacement

"It was getting old, parts were wearing and the shifting was sketchy. I fixed it before failure, which was eminent"

Chuck G., CA (2008 Ford Mustang Base 4.0-L V6)

"Manual transmission needed replacement at 89,000 miles along with flywheel and clutch. $8,200 repair bill."

A metal part is available, and was used on earlier models, but plastic is what they used for mine. Plastic wears, plastic cracks, my car leaked fluid, but only at full temperature, and under pressure, so never where I could actually SEE it come out. Took a bit to work it out. It was a DIY repair"
