The Mustang GT does more than go fast in a straight line. Agile handling and good brakes, a tolerable ride and comfortable seats, easy access and a good view out all contribute to a satisfyingly enjoyable drive. It doesn't hurt that the V8 is a hell-raiser that sounds great and the six-speed manual has short throws and an easy shift action.

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

Loose interior trim or moldings

Jose R., PR (2012 Ford Mustang Premium 5.0-L V8)
Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"I meticulously maintain my mustang. I've been in the aftermarket automotive industry for 20 years and am very knowledgeable about car maintenance. The paint in the aluminum hood is bubbling to the point it has cracked and broken leaving bare primer behind. This is a known issue and Ford refuses to fix it. Fords warranty states there must be a hole in the metal in order to qualify for the paint warranty. Gimme a break. A 5 year old car with a hole from oxidation....aluminum doesn't rust so all Mu"

Peter M., PA (2012 Ford Mustang GT 5.0-L V8)

"Paint peeling on hood die to corrosion"

Anonymous, ON (2012 Ford Mustang Premium 3.7-L V6)

"Edge front of the hood is blistering. Dealer says it's because they used two metals to build it, buth they can t or won't do anything about it. Also, the AM radio is a piece of junk"

"Inside lip of hood is corroding causing paint to bubble and peel on outside lip of the hood"

"Hood is peeling revealng white galvanic corrosion. This has been present for the past several years and was denied as a warranty repair by Ford."

Anonymous, ON (2012 Ford Mustang Base 3.7-L V6)

"Paint is bubbling and chipping due to manufacturer defect in paint primer. Manufacturer admits it's a factory defect but won't fix it free, hiding behind the 5 year warranty"

Anonymous, NY (2012 Ford Mustang GT 5.0-L V8)

"The paint is blistered on the hood and every day continues to spread. The problem started 3 years and one month after the car was purchased. Many attempts were made to have it repaired by Ford but they claimed paint had only one year warranty. The problem is caused by the fact the two metals they used for the hood construction were not primed and painted properly resulting in the mess. The car can not be taken through a car wash and will in the future rust. I will never buy another Ford car and I am very vocal about this issue when asked if I would buy another Ford after years of owning Ford cars."

Anonymous, CA (2012 Ford Mustang Premium 3.7-L V6)

"Paint on center console stain. Had it repainted second that did it that's why I had it painted."

Anonymous, FL (2012 Ford Mustang Premium 5.0-L V8)

Anonymous, FL (2012 Ford Mustang GT 5.0-L V8)

Peter M., PA (2012 Ford Mustang GT 5.0-L V8)

"It looks like rust under the paint on the hood. Ford is calling it another name. Don't remember what that is. Ford will not repair. Cost to repair is $500.00. Unfortunately there are decals on the hood that will have to be replaced also. Do not have"

Anonymous, FL (2012 Ford Mustang GT 5.0-L V8)

"Several spots have "bubbled". These defects were not present when I bought the car. I guess there's a chance this is due to an accident repair made to the car that was unreported by the dealership of by CarFax...or it may be original paint defect"

"Rust on the front area of the hood."

Jose R., PR (2012 Ford Mustang Premium 5.0-L V8)

Patrick C., WI (2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 5.0-L V8)

"Paint on hood is cracking on front, Clear coat is peeling in a few spots."

Barry H., MA (2012 Ford Mustang Base 3.7-L V6)

"My 2012 Mustang is a great car but the front edges of the hood are rusting. As a side note I also bought a 1966 Ford Mustang and guess what also has rust and the location of it. That is correct the 1966 has rust on the hood on the front edges. I guess it runs in the genes."

"Linkage bushings leaking fluid. Had to be completely replace"

Brian W., CA (2012 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 5.4-L V8 supercharged)
Rough shifting

"I have had manual transmissions all my life. This is the worst car to drive ever. It's hard to select the gear, it grinds sometimes, it pops out of gear, the clutch slips if you drive it aggressively, it's notchy. The transmission has been in more than seven times and even replaced once. It's still not right. Sometimes it sounds like a chainsaw during acceleration. Ford knows there is a problem here and they are not doing anything about it. It only has 32,000 miles"

"grinds when shifting from 1st & 2nd"

Dean W., CT (2012 Ford Mustang Base 3.7-L V6)

Michael O., PA (2012 Ford Mustang GT 5.0-L V8)

Derek B., GA (2012 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 5.4-L V8 supercharged)

"The rough shifting was the start of the problem but the service dept. could not duplicate. Until I took the tech for a ride at aprox. 58k Then they took me seriously. I'm glad I bought an extended warranty. It was a costly repair that I didn't pay"

Anonymous, CT (2012 Ford Mustang Premium 3.7-L V6)

"Purchased with shifting issues, was initially very hard and almost impossible to engage second gear in the cold. TSB to change the fluid helped. However, 4 years later issue is not fully resolved. Hard and notchy shifting, occasional clanking"

"Ford/Takata recall"

Anonymous, VA (2012 Ford Mustang GT 5.0-L V8)

"Received a recall notice from Ford for Driver side airbag. Pain in the ass getting it replaced by the local dealership. Passenger airbag warning light still goes on. Received another recall notice for that one. Called the local dealership and then said they didn't have the airbag and were waiting. They said they will call me when they get it. Takata should be ashamed at their failure to make a safe airbag. Read recently in your magazine about another person dying when struck by the shrapnel of the Takata airbag. Any information about the class-action lawsuit by Ford (for me) and all the other companies for all other drivers affected? They should pay all of us for the time to replace these. The anxiety they cause people if you really stop to think what could happen to you or your loved one sitting in the passenger seat with one of these defective Takata airbags. CR has power do an article on the current status of legal claims against Takata. People need to know what legal recourse they have if any. Thank you and great magazine: informative, great guide to buying quality items at reasonable and sometimes great prices. Back to the airbag issue I am very disappointed in Ford Motors response to my questions about these airbags; definitely minimizing the situation and not responsive. That also goes for the local Ford dealership. That said I LOVE MY 2012 FORD MUSTANG."
