2015 Ford Mustang Reliability - Consumer Reports
When Ford added a turbocharged four-cylinder engine to the Mustang and replaced its ancient solid-axle rear suspension with an independent multilink design, the company effectively provided its quinquagenarian pony car with the equivalent of a heart transplant and a hip replacement. What does any of that mean? Strong power with decent fuel economy, handling more planted than skittish and a spryness belying its years.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2015 Ford Mustang owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"When I initially bought the car, the A/C was working wonderfully. About 9000 or so miles into the car, I noticed that the A/C was no longer functioning. After having the refrigerant refilled due to a crack (so I was told), that had to be repeated 3 more times. Finally the dealer replaced most of the system across two more visits. It mostly worked, but required two more tuneup visits to get max performance (replacing a small valve or piece here and there). After about 9 total visits on the topic, it works pretty well, but has never felt the same as it did at the beginning and there is nothing else that the mechanics can I identify to do."

"Got into the car, the air conditioning system wasn't working. Took it to the dealer to be repaired under warranty."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Ford Mustang Premium 5.0-L V8)
Automatic climate control

"The A/C seems to be suffering in auto mode; there will be periods of high blowing in hot temperature and then switch to low when it should be continuously cooling. The A/C system has been a significant disappointment, though I very much enjoy all other aspects of the vehicle."

Anonymous, TX (2015 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Evaporator

"One side would of the defrost would blow warm air and the other side would blow cold air and vice versa with the heater. This would happen at the change of each season. When I'd go from cold to hot or vice versa."

Patricia B., VA (2015 Ford Mustang GT 5.0-L V8)

"Not cooling, leak in the evaporator"

J L., FL (2015 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"this is 5th major A/C failure. a/c leaked, and did not work at all. dealer fiuxed it at cost of over $3500. Ford paid much of this cost, but there were close to $1000 in repair costs before this that ford did not cover."

Anonymous, OH (2015 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The air conditioning system stopped working. I called the dealer to report the problem. The service advisor asked the year and model of the car. She diagnosed the problem immediately. It took a total of 12 days to repair the vehicle having to replace the evaporator twice to get one that functioned properly"

Richard Z., FL (2015 Ford Mustang GT 5.0-L V8)

"The air conditioning started blowing only warm air. The Ford dealer diagnosed the problem as a leaking evaporator. The car was taken to the dealer and the part was replaced and system repaired under warranty"

David K., NC (2015 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The air conditioning gradually failed to stop cooling the car. I took it in and they said it was the evaporator. They had the car in over a weekend and fixed everything correctly. They gave me a car while they worked on it"

Steven C., FL (2015 Ford Mustang GT 5.0-L V8)

"Failed and Ford replaced"

Bruce J., FL (2015 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"AC stopped cooling.Service writer said it was probably the evaporated and they would need to keep it overnight. Car was ready same day but lost coolant and had to go back to shop in a week to have the evaporated replaced"

James B., FL (2015 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"It failed"

Anonymous, SC (2015 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"AC would not work because of a faulty evaporator"

Donald C., FL (2015 Ford Mustang GT 5.0-L V8)

"Air Conditioning stopped getting cold. Ford knew about the issue but didn't perform a recall and also were very unhelpful when they needed to have the car overnight due to a problem in their manufacturing."

Anonymous, FL (2015 Ford Mustang GT 5.0-L V8)

"A/C didn't work."

Robert C., FL (2015 Ford Mustang GT 5.0-L V8)

"Evaporator assembly replaced three times in 37 months and only 14,250 miles. Ford did not cover cost of the third failure as it was one month past the 3 year warranty. It cost me over $2100. Wrote to Ford customer service, no response from them."

Robert W., FL (2015 Ford Mustang 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Heater system

"I had heat on one side of car and air conditioning on other"

Anonymous, WI (2015 Ford Mustang GT 5.0-L V8)
Refrigerant leaks

"Replaced the schrader valve twice"

Greg B., AZ (2015 Ford Mustang Premium 5.0-L V8)

"I started having problems with losing refrigerant about a year ago. The AC system has been inspected and worked on/recharged once, and inspected/recharged two other times without finding the exact location of the leak. I suspect that the leak is in the evaporator. I purchased an electronic halogen detector and it detected evidence of a leak in the AC vents when the AC was operating. Due to the high cost to remove the dash and other myriad parts to access the evaporator for replacement, I have purchased and installed an AC system stop leak to try and increase the service life of the system. So far it seems to be working as hoped. The halogen detector no longer indicates the presence of refrigerant in the air output of the vents. Of course, this is an interim fix, I'm sure the problem will resurface in time."

Anonymous, FL (2015 Ford Mustang GT 5.0-L V8)

"This is more of the a/c problems I've encountered. Except for a/c leaks, the car has been great"

Anonymous, OH (2015 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"see report on evaporator"

James B., FL (2015 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"This just happened recently. The refrigerant needed recharging to get cold air. This seemed to have fixed the problem, at least for now. I don't know if there's a leak or not."

Anonymous, NJ (2015 Ford Mustang Base 3.7-L V6)

"Ford dealer couldn’t figure out what the problem, where the leak was, just filled it with Freon and told us to come back if it stopped working again."

Lance K., CA (2015 Ford Mustang GT 5.0-L V8)

"This vehicle had to be in the shop 3 times before it was fixed."

Gaye W., IN (2015 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"Wiring to trunk lid is insufficiently flexible. Wires break and need to be spliced. Rear camera is intermittently inoperative. Open and closing the trunk usually restores operation. Widely known issue requires camera repair or replacement."

Jeanette B., OH (2015 Ford Mustang GT 5.0-L V8)

"Back-up Camera stopped functioning. I had it repaired at the dealership. Paid for by exteneded warrenty"

Anonymous, FL (2015 Ford Mustang GT 5.0-L V8)

"It works intermitenttly."

Anonymous, LA (2015 Ford Mustang GT 5.0-L V8)

"Back-up camera became worse and worse. Had Ford look at it, replaced wire connections. Problem came back after a short time, Ford just replaced the camera."

Anonymous, NY (2015 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Started 2-3 years ago. Intermittent problem of camera not working. Brought to dealer under warranty, and when picked up it worked. A short time later, stopped working again. Then again, it worked then stopped working again. They had replaced camera and wiring harness, but it did no good. Just stopped bring it in. Recently, it had worked well for a few months, but now its on and off again."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Ford Mustang Base 3.7-L V6)

"Wire harness to camera and trunk latch broken. This is a reported known problem by Ford"

"On occasion when shifting into reverse the screen gut goes blank showing no image at all. Happen infrequently"

Larry D., OK (2015 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Backup camera works about 2/3 of the time. When it does not work the screen is blank"

Greg B., AZ (2015 Ford Mustang Premium 5.0-L V8)

"The problem was a wire in the trunk lid which broke. Once the part was replaced I haven't had any problems with the rear view camera and the radio"

Barry P., AZ (2015 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Camera froze, had to bring it in for service"

Anonymous, FL (2015 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Display screen freezes up

"This has happened several times. The radio stops and the screen will not change except for using the CD. Only self fix (Temporary) is to shut the vehicle off, open door then star engine. Ford has updated the software which seems to have corrected the problem."

Anonymous, FL (2015 Ford Mustang Premium 5.0-L V8)

"The screen freezes up when the car is restarted, if the car is put in reverse prior to turning the engine off"

Anonymous, GA (2015 Ford Mustang Premium 5.0-L V8)

"Both the display screen for Synch and the backup camera had problems, display locked up and was unresponsive, display had diagonal lines on occasion and backup camera would say see your dealer. The Ford deal replaced both the camera and the display screen under my extended warranty."

Anonymous, NV (2015 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Often after a Bluetooth enabled phone call, the entire Sync system would lock up (totally non responding radio, navigation, etc). The only way we found to fix it was to pull over, turn off the ignition, open and close the driver's door, the restart. The dealer tried )update software, etc) but the problem continued"

Gregory L., IN (2015 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Display screen goes blank

"Display screen sometimes goes blank when shifting into reverse showing no picture while backing. Happens infrequently"

Larry D., OK (2015 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"MP3 through USB connection in center console cuts out VERY briefly, though noticeably, on a regularly recurring basis about every 4 minutes"

Marty L., TX (2015 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"This is the SYNC (not the SYNC3 system). It frequently loses USB connection, doesn't understand voice commands consistently, apps work and don't work inconsistently, screen freeze or goes blank. Love the car, but the infotainment system is subpar."

Anonymous, NJ (2015 Ford Mustang Base 3.7-L V6)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"My calls get dropped on Bluetooth regularly with multiple iPhone models (7S, X, and XS Max). Multiple trips to dealership to reset the system and trying to update to the latest firmware did not resolve the issue. The dealership was able to replicate the issue but eventually gave up saying it was a "common issue." I gave up after having the car there for weeks at a time and now resort to using AirPods, which is not the safest or most convenient option."

Anonymous, (2015 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"SYNC system would no longer pair w/smartphone, but my phone will Bluetooth pair w/my other car"

James L., OH (2015 Ford Mustang Premium 3.7-L V6)
Radio

"Antenna fault for Sirius/XM system signal is intermittent."

Anonymous, LA (2015 Ford Mustang GT 5.0-L V8)

"This was covered with the description of the back up camera. A broken wire in the trunk lid caused the problem. Once it was replaced and the wiring was re-routed so it wouldn't be so taut, the issue has been resolved"

Barry P., AZ (2015 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Connection problem with Sirius/XM system"

Anonymous, LA (2015 Ford Mustang GT 5.0-L V8)
Steering wheel controls

"Sometimes the button to reset the mpg, time and mileage after gassing up, does not return to the correct screen. I had to play with the buttons for several minutes to get it right, also the turn indicator makes dual sounds when the car is cold"

Anonymous, AZ (2015 Ford Mustang GT 5.0-L V8)

Body Hardware

Power or manual windows, locks and latches, tailgate, hatch or trunk, doors or sliding doors, mirrors, seat controls, safety belts, sunroof, convertible top.

What Owners Say

"Top liner seam split. Repaired under warranty"

Anonymous, FL (2015 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Dealer replaced compete top assembly because the original top could not be repaired"

Brian D., CA (2015 Ford Mustang GT 5.0-L V8)
Doors or sliding doors

"Passenger door rubbed against front fender"

Richard R., MA (2015 Ford Mustang GT 5.0-L V8)

"When I bought the car I realized the drivers door didn't quite look flush to the body. I was invited by Ford to have my car gone over by all of its design and technical engineers. They measured the door, made notes to give to the dealership who then adjusted the door back to flush. Pretty Amazing that Ford did that!"

Douglas W., CA (2015 Ford Mustang Base 3.7-L V6)

"The body panels do not line up well. This led to uneven gaps and chipped paint because of panels interacting with others"

Donny C., FL (2015 Ford Mustang Base 3.7-L V6)

Glass defects

"Scratched rear window"

J S., ON (2015 Ford Mustang)
Heated or cooled seat controls

"Upon using the remote start function for the car, the seat coolers would intermittently turn "on"--on high. But no light would illuminate signaling the coolers were on. The only way to turn them off was to then turn the seat heaters to high. So frustrating, the dealer said they had trouble replicating this problem. Finally, the only way they said they could remedy the problem was to disable the seat climate system activation via remote start. So...although I can heat or cool my car via remote st"

Julie Y., TX (2015 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The cooled seats suffer from a massive uncurable design defect. They use a thermoelectric cooling unit which must reject heat in order to cool the seat. Ford simply reused the unit from the Fusion. However, the Fusion has under seat AC ducts for rear passengers. These under seat ducts cool the front seat thermoelectric cooling units to let them work. The Mustang does not have under seat AC ducts. Thus the thermal electric cooling units overheat and often heat rather than cool the seats"

W S., CT (2015 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

What Owners Say

Loose exterior trim or moldings

"Rear 50th anniversary logo fell off closing truck in garage, repair cost $1300.00, so far not covered by dealer or Ford."

Matthew H., NE (2015 Ford Mustang Premium 5.0-L V8)

""Ford 50 year logo emblem" on the trunk deck fell off. It was a 6 inch round plastic badge. Replacement part cost $975.00!!! I complained to Ford. They offered me a 50% discount, which means there was a problem with the part. I told them $500 for a plastic 6 inch part was crazy. I bought a reproduction from China for $36.00 on eBay."

Anonymous, WI (2015 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Rafael S., GA (2015 Ford Mustang 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The right rear turn signal stopped working. If it had been a failure of the unit it would have had to be replaced (the entire unit, not just a bulb!) at cost of around $750. Fortunately the light unit was OK and restored to operation by reflashing the computer that controls the turn signals. The repair took two trips to the dealer and conversation with Ford engineers. Rough shifting

"Could not power shift into 3rd gear. The transmission was replaced under warranty."

Michael S., CA (2015 Ford Mustang Premium 5.0-L V8)
Transmission sensor or solenoid

"There is small plastic pad on the clutch pedal arm that must come in contact with, and depress, a switch when you step on the clutch in order to start the car. This is a common safety feature. We currently own 3 vehicles with clutches. After many years the plastic pad crumbles and falls off and the vehicle won't start because the switch isn't being depressed. This pad has failed on all three of our vehicles. For just a few dollars I was able to purchase just the pad for my 2001 Xterra and 2009 Civic Si. Ford requires replacement of the entire clutch arm assembly! $250 for the part plus $250 labor. I called customer service at Fords corporate headquarters to be sure I was getting accurate information from the dealers service department and was told the clutch arm assembly is manufactured by others, and provided to Ford as a unit. Ford doesn't sell just the replacement pads! The Mustang pad crumbled at about 3 years old. My Xterra pad failed after about 10 years and the Civic pad after 9 years. The service dept at Nissan has the pads in stock. I bought the replacement for the Civic at Napa. I refused to replace the entire clutch arm assembly on the Mustang. Napa didn't have anything that would fit so I used a dense felt chair leg pad. To add insult to injury, the brake arm assembly has the same pad/switch system and the plastic pad on the brake arm failed not long after the clutch pad. When that happened the brake lights stayed on constantly. I used a felt pad to replace the pad on the brake arm."

Electrical failure

"We have had continual problems with the A/C. The A/C would intermittently blow HOT air from vents and seats,in the summer, in HOUSTON!!! We made repeated trips to the dealer to resolve the problem. Finally, they said a software issue was to blame and we have had better luck. But the seat/heat/cool system then gave us issues, about which we were at odds with the dealership"

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

What Owners Say

Engine rebuild or replacement

"Car ran fantastic for 85,000 miles. A small turbo inlet tube developed a very small leak that over time caused the car to run low on coolant. The car went from normal temp to full hot in less than one minute, This was enough to cause a check engine light to come on 2,000 miles later. The end result was a brand new motor paid for by Ford."

Turbo or supercharger

"I bought this car for my now 21 yr old son. He was living in Austin and 2 days before he was to leave to move to Atlanta it started smoking. He took it to the Ford dealer and was told that he needed a new turbo and a new evaporator for the AC. He was also told the cost for the turbo and labor was $10000 and cost +labor for the evaporator was $3000. He was told on Thursday the car would be ready on Tuesday. U-haul had already been reserved for Sat. and his sister was available to drive one of the vehicles. He searched for and found a cheap flight from Atlanta to Austin for the following Sat. giving four extra days for the dealer to make repairs. They called him the first of the week to tell him a part needed to install the turbo was on back order and would not be available until the first of the month- about 10 more days. The part did in-fact come in on the first and was immediately repaired. He picked the car up that morning (Friday). That evening He filled up with gas put the car in reverse and everything locked up. He could not go forward or backward. He called Ford and they sent out a tech who told him he only unlocked doors. He had to wait over an hour for that tech and almost three hours for a tow truck. The dealer that had had the car was not open on Sat so he had the tow truck take it to the next closest dealer whose service dept was open on Sat. The following day the transmission tech looked at it and apparently fixed it in about 30 seconds for no charge. If something that can totally disable a car can be repaired in such a short time, Ford should send out a recall or tell people how to repair it. The only thing good about all was that when I bought the car I did something I never do-bought an extended warranty for two thousand dollars. My reasoning was his age and consequently his inability to pay and the very high cost of every little computer. In this case $100.00 deductible paid a thirteen thousand dollar repair bill. It did not pay for the lost two weeks for my son while he should have been in Atlanta looking for a job or the savings he used up flying back to Austin plus the expenses incurred while there."
