Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"It was covered under warranty, but had to go back twice for several days each time"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Ford Mustang Base 3.7-L V6)

"Needs to have liquid coolant changed frequently"

Kathy H., WA (2016 Ford Mustang GT 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"All parts of the AC system failed within the 1yr timeframe at different intervals. Repairs covered by warranty but downtime was over a week. The dealer did provide a loaner @ no charge."

Douglas L., FL (2016 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Compressor failed requiring replacement. One year later AC stopped operating requiring repair - compressor related."

Anonymous, MS (2016 Ford Mustang Base 3.7-L V6)

"I had this problem 12 months ago when they vehicle was under warranty . The dealership only said it. I needed Freon. The identical problem occurred one month after the warranty expired and the dealer said the repair would be about $1000. Ford motor company may pay for this repair."

Walker B., SC (2016 Ford Mustang GT Premium 5.0-L V8)

"The problem was a leak"

Anonymous, FL (2016 Ford Mustang Base 3.7-L V6)

"24 months ago air condition quit working and was repaired under warranty. 12 months later it quit working again. With difficulty got Ford to pay for repair - problem with this AC was apparently common and Ford , 12 months late developed a fix for it."

Anonymous, SC (2016 Ford Mustang GT Premium 5.0-L V8)

"A/C system made a clicking noise when in operation. Very noticeable if you were standing outside the vehicle. Less noticeable if you were inside the cabin."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Ford Mustang Base 3.7-L V6)

Anonymous, GA (2016 Ford Mustang GT Premium 5.0-L V8)

"Complete failure, required the dash to be removed and a new “climate box” installed ( made in China) and Ford knows it’s a problem but hasn’t fixed it"

Anonymous, NC (2016 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Compressor blew"

Charles B., FL (2016 Ford Mustang GT Premium 5.0-L V8)

Automatic climate control

"Heater/cooler box failed after 3500 miles. Know problem to Ford"

Anonymous, NC (2016 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"all at once a/c stopped working, blow HOT air... than it effected the computer, putting the car in safely mode shutting down the car.. stopped"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Ford Mustang GT 5.0-L V8)
Condenser

"After about 12000 miles the evaporator, & condenser were replaced as a result of noises in the engine compartment!"

Sam D., FL (2016 Ford Mustang GT 5.2-L V8)

"Replaced free under warranty."

Anonymous, AR (2016 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The air conditioner just stopped working. I had left the Mustang in the garage for about 4 months during the winter, and when I brought it out to drive it, the A/C wasn't working."

Howard W., TX (2016 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Over a period of about 10 days it intermittently failed, and the died on the last day. Took 3 days ri fix. The entire dash had to be removed..."

Vincent N., FL (2016 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"this is a known issue with this model year, the condenser goes out and the car blows hot on driver side and somewhat cold on passenger side. Fixed under warranty."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The refrigerant/condenser problem were related. It quit working with less than 30,000 miles on the car, which is ridiculous, but not covered by warranty because the car was barely over 3 years old. What is really maddening was that it was a A/C design problem known about by Ford but they chose to not take care of it on vehicles that were beyond the warranty period even though they knew about it beforehand. Spending over $2,000 on such a repair is maddening!"

Anonymous, (2016 Ford Mustang GT Premium 5.0-L V8)

"The ac stopped operating properly and the condenser needed to be replaced."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Ford Mustang Base 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Last year the A/C system stopped working and the dealership replaced a control valve and dealt with leaks. This year the issue returned and now the condenser has been replaced under warranty for leaking."

Anonymous, WA (2016 Ford Mustang)
Evaporator

"2015-16 Mustang's have a bad evaporator. Fixed under extended warranty. There is a TSB out on it."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Ford Mustang Base 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Leading into the cars 2nd spring, the AC was not working. Evaporator had to be replaced. Was replaced under factory warranty."

Scott H., TX (2016 Ford Mustang GT Premium 5.0-L V8)

"Dash had to be removed. Was with out the car for several days"

Anonymous, TX (2016 Ford Mustang GT Premium 5.0-L V8)

"Evaporator coil failed (leaked) and had to be replaced"

Anonymous, AL (2016 Ford Mustang GT350 5.2-L V8)

"The a/c stopped blowing cold in the late summer of 2019. After researching, I found this to be a very common problem on this car. The repair, which requires removal of the entire dash, costs over $1,000 just for labor! There is zero dealer support that I could find regarding cost coverage. Extremely disappointing to buy a new car and have a repair bill of this magnitude at 39,000 miles!"

Anonymous, VA (2016 Ford Mustang Base 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"I have owned a 2015 AND 2016 Mustang GT PREMIUM that were basically carbon copies of each other and wouldn't you know... Each of them had to have the low side evaporative valve replaced due to them tending to leak slowly and this requires 2 days of service to completely pull the dash from the car to get to a large portion of the A/C components; specifically the part that has failed in both cars within the first 2 years of ownership. This is a known issue that plagues all 2015 & later (S550) Mustangs according to mechanics at two separate Ford Dealerships & one independent mechanic I took my 2015 to just to get a professional diagnosis prior to taking the car to Ford Service Department for diagnostics & repairs."

Anonymous, (2016 Ford Mustang GT Premium 5.0-L V8)

"The air conditioning wasn't cooling. I took it to the dealer who replaced the evaporator at no charge to me."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"AC failed and evaporator was replaced under warrenty"

Anonymous, TX (2016 Ford Mustang Premium 5.0-L V8)

"Problem was misdiagnosed and parts not readily available. Car was down for 1 week. Dealer did provide an inadequate rental"

Anonymous, FL (2016 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"AC evaporator lost refrigerant and had to be replaced. Involved removing dashboard. Covered by warranty. Seems to be a common problem with 2015 & 2016 Mustangs due to faulty evaporators."

James B., CA (2016 Ford Mustang GT Premium 5.0-L V8)

"entire unit was replaced under warranty and sent directly to Ford for research"

Anonymous, TX (2016 Ford Mustang GT Premium 5.0-L V8)

"A/C stopped putting out cold air. Apparently a problem with all 2015+ Mustangs. Was in the shop 2 days for repair. Plus, dealer damaged driver door panel during repair, which then had to be replaced in a separate trip to the dealer."

Robert S., FL (2016 Ford Mustang GT350 5.2-L V8)

"The a/c evaporator went out and the service department was awful in their repair."

John G., IL (2016 Ford Mustang GT350 5.2-L V8)

"Not cooling"

Anonymous, TX (2016 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"AC slowly died and was diagnosed with evaporator failure. Car was in the shop for 2 days but I had a rental care of Ford as I had purchased that feature in my contract"

Anonymous, FL (2016 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Refrigerant was leaking from the evaporator core under the dash on passenger side and had to be replaced summer of 2017."

Jesse W., OK (2016 Ford Mustang Base 3.7-L V6)

"Evaporator leaked at 3100 miles. Dealer had to pull dash to replace. System still has a unresolved leak. Air conditioning refrigerant recharged at 4000 miles. 4th visit to Ford dealer for this problem."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Ford Mustang Base 3.7-L V6)
Refrigerant leaks

"recharged multiple times within 6 months, both times told no leak found"

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Leaking seal"

Anonymous, (2016 Ford Mustang GT350 5.2-L V8)

"Same problem is discussed above."

Anonymous, SC (2016 Ford Mustang GT Premium 5.0-L V8)

"Part of misdiagnose"

Anonymous, FL (2016 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Used the A/C system in the same week as the failure and it worked perfectly. Took vehicle to local dealer after the failure. Diagnostic test revealed no refrigerant, . . . . BUT no leaks could be found."

Peter K., NJ (2016 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Air conditioner stopped working so we took it to the ford dealer and they added refrigerant and that helped for about a month before it stopped cooling. They ordered a evaporator core and replaced it after putting leak detector in the AC system. They broke the Backup camera /media player glass when the loosened dash fell on the shifting knob and had to replace it also."

Jesse W., OK (2016 Ford Mustang Base 3.7-L V6)

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"Backup camera lost connectivity to screen. Have not fixed yet. Unwilling to take care in for repair during COVID-19 crisis."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Camera image gets noisy and jittery and sometime stops. My previous mustang (2015) had the same problem. It is due to bad engineering. It is a wiring problem that is not covered by extended wiring. It should have been recalled!"

Anonymous, MA (2016 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The wire from backup camera was too short as installed in factory ... it was a write up issues ... it failed on me they had to repair. How much did they save on an extra 10t0 15 inches of wire? Beancounter(s) created a dangerous condition to two bits."

Anonymous, (2016 Ford Mustang Premium 3.7-L V6)

"The backup cameras failed. Apparently there was a service bulletin from Ford too replace the cable. The cableway too short and tension from opening the trunk lid caused the cable to break"

Barry S., ON (2016 Ford Mustang Base 3.7-L V6)

"Camera went blank in reverse. Took in for repair. New system didn't work. took a second system to solve problem, a defective camera wire"

Anonymous, NY (2016 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Display screen difficult to see

"After parking in sun, the display screen went into night mode. Sensor on the center of the dash needed replacing. Covered by warranty"

Paul R., TX (2016 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Display screen freezes up

"Module went out in my Sync system which caused my touch screen to freeze up, phone not to sync, navigation not to work. Had to have module replaced."

Anonymous, LA (2016 Ford Mustang GT Premium 5.0-L V8)
Display screen goes blank

"Backup camera does not work 50% of the time. We took it to dealer to fix it but it started working for them they said and they wouldn't fix it now 3 year warranty is over. Also the screen goes black in hot weather. They busted the screen when removing dash to replace AC evaporator that was leaking but replaced it."

Jesse W., OK (2016 Ford Mustang Base 3.7-L V6)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"Android Auto and other interfaces are quirky. Sometimes work and sometimes disconnects. hard part is that I don't know if it is the app or Sync 3"

Eric M., WI (2016 Ford Mustang GT Premium 5.0-L V8)

"it seems that Apple and Ford are conspiring with proprietary arrogance by arbitrarily excluding previously allowed devices in order to force consumers to abandon their expensive devices for blue tooth enabled newer devices and this has been evident each and every time the software of the sync system has updated all on it's own via wifi connection in my driveway, simple mp3 players (apple ipods connected via usb cable) are now not allowed to be connected because the "smart" features are not present with them so one's history and musical taste cannot be monitored and recorded by Apple and Ford. Shameful practices to be sure."

Anonymous, BC (2016 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The SYNC system was to update via WiFi, or USB drive, but is was not working. The internal drive was defective and rendered the system in operable. It was replaced under warranty."

Chuck K., FL (2016 Ford Mustang GT Premium 5.0-L V8)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"while driving the signal was dropped and the bluetooth wouldn't reconnect until I turned off the car."

Anonymous, (2016 Ford Mustang Base 3.7-L V6)
Radio

"Sirius Satellite Antennae system bad. Not a Sirius issue. Multiple times daily loses satellite connection, displays Acquiring Satellite Connection. Rain or shine, clear unobstructed line of site to satellite, not a bridge, tunnel, or garage issue. Ford has had car 6 times in past 2 years trying to fix. Going back in shop this week."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Ford Mustang GT Premium 5.0-L V8)

"Sirius radio cannot hold signal. Dealership has replaced antenna, problem remains unresolved at this time. Other radio functions work properly, problem is with Sirius radio only, may just discontinue the services as the quality is not worth paying for in this vehicle, our other vehicle Sirius works fine"

Drive System

Driveshaft or axle, CV joint, differential, transfer case, 4WD/AWD components, driveline vibration, traction control, electronic stability control (ESC), electrical failure.

What Owners Say

Differential

"The 2016 Mustang GT PREMIUM we purchased to replace our 2015 that was totaled during a winter storm January before last had a distinct, albeit relatively quiet low frequency series of rubbing / grinding and somewhat dull groaning sounds that were most noticeable when maneuvering at low speed especially when backing out of our driveway or making sharp turns, or pulling away from a stop in parking lots or when parking the car in our garage. This coincided with a noticeable, annoying & somewhat disconcerting vibration that emanated from the drive train....it felt as if it originated in or around the rear differential and/or drive shaft and it was very much present in the steering wheel and also in deep from within / under the driver's seat--meaning it could be felt quite readily in the seat of my pants / rump particularly at highway speeds that were in excess of 70 mph. In fact, between 80-85, the vibration was often so present and out of the ordinary--especially when compared to the identical 2015 model (right down to the color & options) that we owned prior to the 2016 and which had ZERO VIBRATIONS OR AWKWARD NOISES to speak of, at any speed! After several attempts at having Ford diagnose the source of our unwanted vibrations & odd sounds, Ford recommended adding FRICTION MODIFIER to the rear differential. This did not make a bit of difference; however, it did seem to contribute to or directly cause the rear differential to begin leaking...excessively. This occurred throughout the months of Covid-19 lockdown & by the time we got the car to dealership for service, the rear differential had run so low that it had to be rebuilt entirely with new bearings, seals, pinion and more. Thankfully, Ford covered this 100% under the original factory warranty, which covers drive train malfunctions & complete rebuilds up to 60K miles. Luckily for me, I had the great fortune of having taken the car to the dealership with just 84 miles left until the car reached 60K miles; which totally saved me well over $5K for the week of tear-down, diagnostics, parts ordering and subsequent full rebuild of the rear differential. I haven't picked the car up yet but should know in 2 days whether or not all my mysterious sounds & unpleasant vibrations in this 2016 were the result of the rear differential alone and whether or not the rebuild resolves these idiosyncrasies / irritations that I had been trying to get Ford to properly diagnose and FIX for over a year since purchasing the car used (1 previous owner, clean Carfax and complete service history present at time of purchase). The most frustrating part of the whole ordeal was trying to get through to the SENIOR SERVICE TECHNICIAN that I had a 2015 with ZERO ISSUES and was certain the 2016 was NOT performing up to FORD ENGINEERS' specifications for the vehicles straight from the factory...much less after 2.5 years, 43K miles of original owner usage prior to our purchase. It took ruining the differential to FIX IT!"

Driveline vibration

"Driveshaft replaced, warranty covered repair, at dealer for 10 days"

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Ford Mustang Premium 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"My mechanic checked out the car after I bought it and said that it had a significant driveline vibration problem, so I took it to a dealer because it was still under warranty, they tried to fix it two separate times, the first time it did nothing, the second time it improved it but my mechanic says it is still unacceptable. We believe that Ford has a known driveline vibration problem with the 2015-2018 Mustang model."

Michael C., ME (2016 Ford Mustang Base 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Vibration could be felt in the car the most between 30-40 mph but to a lesser degree at slower and higher speeds. The vibration felt like it was coming from the rear of the car.The vibration developed slowly over a long time. I rotated tires , balanced tires, did alignment and even replaced a pair of tires on the rear of the car. Finally after visiting the Ford service center on 2 occasions and over a protracted period of time , the problem was traced to the rear driveshaft which needed to be rebalanced. It took over a week to reach that conclusion . I told this story to a friend of mine work worked in a Ford dealership as a service manager for many years and before i could get to the final fix he said it was the driveshaft and this was a common problem on some models of Ford."

Driveshaft or axle

"Left rear wheel bearing failed"

Philip S., KY (2016 Ford Mustang GT Premium 5.0-L V8)
Electrical failure

"A/C pressure switch failed and was replaced"

Anonymous, AL (2016 Ford Mustang GT350 5.2-L V8)

"A frayed wire caused a short in the system which supplied power to the compressor, so no cold air was produced. Did not affect the heating system - just the a/c. Was fixed by local dealer under warranty"

Steve T., NV (2016 Ford Mustang Base 3.7-L V6)

Steering linkage (includes rack and pinion)

"fluid leak, required full replacement of steering unit"

Anonymous, FL (2016 Ford Mustang Base 3.7-L V6)

"Steering wheel felt as if it was binding when turning left about 20 degrees, requiring slightly more effort to continue turning. Most people probably would not even have noticed, but I did and since it was a potential, albeit rare possible safety concern it was taken to the dealer and they went over every possible cause. Turns out the steering gear was faulty, I believe one of the teeth on the gear was damaged causing it to bind when turning left at a certain degree. The entire steering rack had to be replaced. The repair took only 1 day, since the part wasn't immediatly in stock and I received a brand new 2018 Ford to drive in for my inconvenience. All in all, there are worse things that can happen, and I'm not upset, especially considering how very professional my Ford dealer was in resolving this issue."
