The Ford Ranger falls far short of modern pickup-truck standards. It's ungainly and stiff-riding; has a rough and noisy, inefficient engine; and a cramped, uncomfortable cabin. The interior is crudely finished. Compact dimensions and a usefully sized bed are the Ranger's only pluses. Even if you took thousands off its list price, the Ranger still would not be a bargain.

Owner Reports

Worse Better
Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Since I had seen no symptoms of any of the things on the list, I waited until my next oil/filter change was due, and had my garage that I've been using my entire driving career (over 25 years) check these issues and verify them all (or not, as the case may be) and prioritize the verifiable items. This led to a ball joint replacement for over $400 that I couldn't easily afford, but that's better than a $4000-$40000 accident!"

"cam synchronizer assy. failed"

David N., UT (2002 Ford Ranger None 3.0-L V6)

"So the main computer chip started putting out 1.1 volts instead of normal 0.4(?) volts. This caused too hot of ignition in two plugs which evaporated valve seats which caused engine failure at 70 mph. required head build and engine cylinder redo. After rebuild, still acting flakey and found the computer oervoltage problem. Another $1100."
