The Taurus tested out reasonably well. The car is roomy, plus it rides and handles soundly. However, even the upgrade 200-hp engine lacks real punch and isn't particularly frugal. The wagon was one of the few inexpensive seven-passenger vehicles of its time.

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for about 420,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2019 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Anonymous, NY (2002 Ford Taurus SEL 3.0-L V6)

"Upper joint needed replacement"

Anonymous, VA (2002 Ford Taurus SEL 3.0-L V6)

"The power steering has a leak and is time for replacement"

Anonymous, GA (2002 Ford Taurus SE 3.0-L V6)

Kevin M., MO (2002 Ford Taurus SES 3.0-L V6)

"It was working but leaking fluid (replacing the cap did not help) so I had it replaced with a rebuilt pump"

William R., TX (2002 Ford Taurus SE 3.0-L V6)
Shocks or struts

"strut snapped in my own driveway when I put it in reverse, cut into the front tire and went flat fast. thank God I wasn't doing highway speeds. sent ford a letter about this and they pretty much said wear and tear and thanks for being a ford customer. well, not anymore. thought they would have don't a recall on the failed strut as should have been a safety issue"

Anonymous, PA (2002 Ford Taurus SES 3.0-L V6)

"exchanged as a part of a broken spring. They were being watched and were to be replaced at sometime"

Anonymous, MI (2002 Ford Taurus SE 3.0-L V6)

Nick G., NC (2002 Ford Taurus SES 3.0-L V6)

Mechanic stated the broken coils caused the struts to blow out. Cars have been using coils springs for 70+years, this used to be an extremely rare failure, clearly a quality problem. Will not buy a Ford again"

Gary S., NE (2002 Ford Taurus LX 3.0-L V6)

"Coil spring dropped into and became embedded in tire while it was parked in driveway. There is ruined and car needs to be towed in to repair. I have not done that yet"
