The Taurus tested out reasonably well. The car is roomy, plus it rides and handles soundly. However, even the upgrade 200-hp engine lacks real punch and isn't particularly frugal. The wagon was one of the few inexpensive seven-passenger vehicles of its time.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"Easy to drive, easy to park, good acceleration. Corners well."

Anonymous, PA (2003 Ford Taurus)

"The engine still purrs and is strong as ever. I never have any issues merging into highway traffic as it accelerates quickly without hesitation. Being that it's 13 years old, it's quite impressive."

TINA H., MA (2003 Ford Taurus)

"Throttle valve/plate sticky - car seems to stall out when accelerating from a stop - especially as you turn left"

SCOTT C., KY (2003 Ford Taurus)

"I am having the problem again of hesitation in the gas flow, sometimes in accelerations, occasionally when steady driving. Had repaired last year or so, but now beginning to do it again. Brakes seem squishy; I need to get those looked at also."

LYNDELL S., MD (2003 Ford Taurus)

"It has a very responsive and powerful V-6 engine that provides excellent acceleration, both from standing start and on highway. I am very comfortable with the power and handling. Where I live there could be ice, snow, and other challenges and this vehicle handles it all."

WILLIAM R., CO (2003 Ford Taurus)

"The Taurus is a slug. The fuel consumption is high, but the engine runs great. The cruise control stopped working this year. 2016."

LAURENCE G., ON (2003 Ford Taurus)

"It has a steady feeling when on slippery roads. The engine is powerful enough to handle the car nicely."

Anonymous, WA (2003 Ford Taurus)

"24-valve engine peppy and excellent passing acceleration. handling is above average for a station-wagon."

Anonymous, MB (2003 Ford Taurus)

"very good car in many respects. Acceleration and handling are very good. Took it to FL to leave there as our FL car."

Carol P., OH (2003 Ford Taurus)

"Good driving car for the money."

Carl F., MI (2003 Ford Taurus)

"Excellent acceleration for passing, merging onto freeway or interstates, very responsive and predictable steering. Can't think of any negative aspects."

William R., CO (2003 Ford Taurus)

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Suspension noises from struts and exhaust system. Good size car for carrying passengers and good visability with this full size car. Later models are small with difficult driver vision."

FREDERICK D., NY (2003 Ford Taurus)

"AC fan went out this year; interior lights and power windows went out due to a bad GEM module"

SCOTT C., KY (2003 Ford Taurus)

"The only bad thing about my 2003 Ford Taurus is a constant but ignorable chirping engine noise. I've been wanting to get it fixed, but I have not gotten around to it yet."

Anonymous, OK (2003 Ford Taurus)

"Climate control: A.C. and heat seems less forceful. I am less able to get the car good and cool or really warm. Ride, etc.: No kidding, seems like everyone comments on the smooth ride, comfortable seats, and quietness. Guess they don't expect such a nice ride from a station wagon. The back of the front seats make you sit straight up--that's always been good to me--I can drive longer without getting tired with the straight-back seats."

LYNDELL S., MD (2003 Ford Taurus)

"big cars are still comfortable"

Jim S., ON (2003 Ford Taurus)

"Road noise is extreme."

Anonymous, WA (2003 Ford Taurus)

"Relatively quiet for an older car. Seats are not very comfortable, but the car has a very nice ride."

Anonymous, IL (2003 Ford Taurus)

"quiet, easy adjustment to front seats, comfortable on long trips, ride is smooth but not squishy--sense of good control when needed."

Anonymous, MB (2003 Ford Taurus)

"The head rest is ideally situated, you can put the seat back and sleep in it."

George D., CT (2003 Ford Taurus)

"It's comfortable and quiet"

Anonymous, WA (2003 Ford Taurus)

"Road noise is very noticeable, quiets for a time with brand new tires, but comes back quickly."

Anonymous, IN (2003 Ford Taurus)

"The driver’s seat cushioning fails badly causing the driver to sink into the seat. Have to use a seat cushion to boost me up to see out the windows."

Michael R., LA (2003 Ford Taurus)

"Size o0f vehicle and comfort AND space. Easily seats 5."

Frederick D., NY (2003 Ford Taurus)

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"We think the Ford Taurus was a lot of bang for the buck. It's been an extremely reliable car (which is why we keep it), still looks great, and is a rather "unfussy" car to own. It does its thing well, and it's easy to drive and park. Has plenty of scat, too, which is nice."

Anonymous, PA (2003 Ford Taurus)

"It's 13 years old and I've had it for 12 years. It's purely a backup car for the last several years. It's totally reliable and generally comfortable. It probably has no retail value, so I keep it."

TOM G., TN (2003 Ford Taurus)

"was a good dependable auto."

TERENCE C., PA (2003 Ford Taurus)

"Drove to Florida all highway got 31 MPG on this car. Size, comfort, ride, handling,. all good no bad. great value for me"

KAREN F., NY (2003 Ford Taurus)

"Vehicle was reasonably priced and had the exact features I wanted; I was able to order it directly from the factory through the dealership. Vehicle has had little problems and requires only standard factory maintenance and upkeep."

WILLIAM R., CO (2003 Ford Taurus)

"I bought the car January 2004 in used condition with 19k miles on it. Now in 2016 with 135k miles the car still looks good and performs just fine. Car was worth every dime I paid for it."

Anonymous, MD (2003 Ford Taurus)

"this car was dealers demo when i bought it so the price i paid was very good since it was a dealers car"

MICHAEL R., LA (2003 Ford Taurus)

"Lasts forever and almost anybody can fix it."

Greg B., NC (2003 Ford Taurus)

"Considering its vintage (we bought it new in 2003), this car has proved its value over and over again."

John C., IL (2003 Ford Taurus)
