Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Anonymous, CA (2011 GMC Acadia SLT 3.6-L V6)

"I have had the dealership attempt to fix the aircon at every visit for about six years. In that time, it has worked for a few days after each visit, but in that half-decade or so, it has operated correctly for perhaps 20 hours. That's probably well over $100.00 in repairs per hour of operation"

Anonymous, ON (2011 GMC Acadia Unsure 3.6-L V6)

"compress stopped operating and was replaced"

Anonymous, CA (2011 GMC Acadia SLT 3.6-L V6)

Anonymous, NH (2011 GMC Acadia Denali 3.6-L V6)

"Apparently, the ac system feeds the front and the rear on separate lines. The rear line started to leak refrigerant at 35000 miles, affecting the autos total ac. The dealer cost to replace the tubing was excessive so I had a local garage install a kit that shut off the line feeding the rear at a quarter of the cost"

Anonymous, UT (2011 GMC Acadia Denali 3.6-L V6)

"Twice in the last year I have taken the 2011 GMC because the A/C was not cooling. Both times the repair was diagnosed as a leak but ultimately the repair shop was not sure this was the total problem. I was told A/C has had a history of problems in the Traverse and the Acadias."

Power steering pumps and hoses

"The Acadia groaned every time you would turn into a parking spot or back out. Then it became worse doing it at low speeds like turning at a stop sign. It felt as if you had no power steering at all when this happened too. The pump and assembly had to be replaced and a leaky hose as well."

"Power steering failed had to replace power steering pump"

Anonymous, NE (2011 GMC Acadia Denali 3.6-L V6)

"Power steering pump failed and was replaced by warranty. This was a known issue to gmc as they voluntarily extend the warranty specifically for this part"

Paul D., MA (2011 GMC Acadia SLT 3.6-L V6)

"power steering pump had to be rebuilt at 45,000 miles due to leakage"

Anonymous, CA (2011 GMC Acadia SLT 3.6-L V6)

"Power steering pump failed while driving. Would halfway operate if engine rpm over 2500. Should be a recall. GMC released a service bulletin to extend coverage to 10 years or 150k miles from build date(not sale date). Mine failed with less than 6 months left to go so was luckily replaced for free. Was at the dealer shop for 8 days. Power steering rack also leaking, dealer would not fix at same time so I would have to pay for all the labor hours for 90% of the same work."

Shocks or struts

"front struts starting to leak"

Anonymous, NH (2011 GMC Acadia SLT 3.6-L V6)

Anonymous, NY (2011 GMC Acadia SL 3.6-L V6)

"Front end suspension on V6 models lack durability of V8 models. In order to cut front end weight for the under powered engine and lower cost, the front struts are very prone to wear out quickly."

Anonymous, GA (2011 GMC Acadia SLT 3.6-L V6)

"Struts were leaking."

Darren V., MD (2011 GMC Acadia SLT 3.6-L V6)

"2019 I felt the steering became harder. Took it to Auto Centric. They diagnosed new rack & pinion needed. I think they also replaced shocks & struts. They fixed everything and it has been driving fine since."

"While out of town and driving on some mountain roads I heard my brakes groaning, especially when on a steep downhill grade. Replaced the rotors on both front wheels with factory parts at a GMC dealer in North Carolina, which took care of the problem. Approximately $370."

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

What Owners Say

Cylinder head

"At a speed of about 25 mph the engine made strange noises and with in less then a eight of a mile the power was lost and the vehicle was uncontrollable. Was able to pull over with our any power steering or breaks. Vehicle towed to dealership of purchase and was informed that the engine was blown and needed to be replaced at a figure of approximately $8,000.00! It was determined that the engine sucked several valves thru the cylanders."

Edward D., NJ (2011 GMC Acadia SLE 3.6-L V6)

"carbin build up on valves"

Thomas E., ME (2011 GMC Acadia SLT 3.6-L V6)
Timing belt or chain

"The timing chains had to be replaced after the Check Engine light indicated a misalignment that is caused by stretching of the timing chains. This appears to be a common problem on the Acadia. GM issued a TSB and extended the warranty to cover it on some of the earlier models, but not the 2011. It is an extremely expensive repair because the entire engine must be dropped to access the timing chains. It occurred around 70K miles which is also very premature"

P L., VA (2011 GMC Acadia SLT 3.6-L V6)

"Twice the check engine light popped on for a random misfire of the engine. The first time it did it, the engine was not functioning properly and dirty exhaust was emitting from the exhaust pipe. The dealer said a new timing chain was needed, but another mechanic noticed a loose solenoid. The random misfire has happened twice, but the timing chain has never happened"

Anonymous, UT (2011 GMC Acadia SLT 3.6-L V6)

"Known issue; timing chain stretches and they did cover the first one under warranty but had the vehicle for 14 days and did not offer a loaner. Second one did the same 2 years only with 22,000 miles and it was out of warranty"

Anonymous, MI (2011 GMC Acadia SLE 3.6-L V6)

"My check engine light went on at about 80,000 miles. The timing chain had to be replaced. Total bill was in excess of $3,000.00 Dealer told me that this was due to a design flaw with this engine, LOTS of labor required to make the correction. Said that I could expect this to happen again in the future, GREAT!"

Anonymous, IL (2011 GMC Acadia Denali 3.6-L V6)

"The engine starting making clicking noises at a traffic light, but no check engine light. I was less than 1/2 mile from home, so I drove home. the next morning, I had a mechanic come to the house and check the engine when the timing chain gave way and damaged a lifter. The car was at 102,000 miles so the GMC warranty for the power train had expired at 100,000. I ended up replacing the engine."

Van A., MS (2011 GMC Acadia SLT 3.6-L V6)

"timing chain became loose and required a $2,500 replacement"

Marcus K., OH (2011 GMC Acadia SL 3.6-L V6)

"Needed to be replaced which I guess is an ongoing problem"

Anonymous, IN (2011 GMC Acadia SLE 3.6-L V6)

"I bought the car in the expectation that, since it had a chain rather than a belt, this would never be a source of worry. Unfortunately, the chain eventually wore out, and the repair was massively expensive (to the point that I asked if they could simply replace the entire engine. Unfortunately, crate motors are not available for vehicles build on the Lambda platform)"

Engine Cooling

Radiator, cooling fan, antifreeze leaks, water pump, thermostat, overheating.

What Owners Say

Antifreeze leaks

Anonymous, IL (2011 GMC Acadia SLT 3.6-L V6)
Water pump

"The seal on the water pump shaft failed and caused a coolant leak and the water pump had to be replaced. This is another known issue on the Acadia for which a TSB was issued and the warranty extended. Again, the 2011 was not covered. This was an $800 repair"

P L., VA (2011 GMC Acadia SLT 3.6-L V6)

"With 38K miles the engine had to have the water pump replaced Also after the extended warranty expired the engine had problems"

I had the axles replaced but still had noise in the front end. After replacing both struts the car drives smoothly, steering is improved and it is quiet even on bumpy roads. A large investment but my GMC handles like new."
