The GMC Envoy has a good basic design with roomy, quiet accommodations and a compliant ride. But handling is less than agile overall and sloppy at the limit. Braking isn't very good, either. We also found the front-seat-mounted safety belts uncomfortable. Stability control was made standard for 2006, which improves handling considerably in emergency situations.

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for over 300,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2021 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Ball joints

"They needed to be replaced"

Anonymous, MT (2002 GMC Envoy XL 4.2-L 6 Cyl)

Anonymous, AB (2002 GMC Envoy SLE 4.2-L 6 Cyl)
Electronic or air suspension

"The vehicle suddenly riding very low. I bought an OBD2 code reader to see if the system was generating any codes. Not finding any, I discovered the air ride system will not produce any codes. Doing manual troubleshooting, I found that both level sensor arms broke. Most likely one broke earlier and the problem didn't occur until the other one broke. I was able to replace both sensors myself, but I'm having challenges in getting the setting back to normal and level. It is still a case of trial and error."

Anonymous, VA (2002 GMC Envoy SLT 4.2-L 6 Cyl)

"When car parked the vehicle would drop down instead of staying lifted."

Anonymous, VA (2002 GMC Envoy SLE 4.2-L 6 Cyl)

As soon as I was back in town, I took it to my mechanic. They said it was probably the ignition coil, based on the computer. I still had to drive it another 250 miles before they could get me in for repairs. It was the ignition coil."
