The GMC Envoy has a good basic design with roomy, quiet accommodations and a compliant ride. But handling is less than agile overall and sloppy at the limit. Braking isn't very good, either. We also found the front-seat-mounted safety belts uncomfortable. Stability control was made standard for 2006, which improves handling considerably in emergency situations.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2004 GMC Envoy owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Alignment

"The alignment was done as a result of the replacement of the suspension parts which was due to normal wear and tear."

Anonymous, FL (2004 GMC Envoy SLE 4.2-L 6 Cyl)
Ball joints

"Seals on front steering ball joints failed causing leak of fluid"

Anonymous, CA (2004 GMC Envoy XUV 4.2-L 6 Cyl)

Anonymous, WI (2004 GMC Envoy XUV 4.2-L 6 Cyl)

"After 15 years of use my automatic load-leveling system gave out. The rubber, inflatable boots that raised and lowered the body deteriorated to the point that they wouldn't hold air, although the air pump still worked. Replacing the worn out parts was very expensive and future costs were likely, so I opted to replace the entire system with a Strut Masters conversion kit which included coil springs and conventional shocks, and cost $392. I paid my local mechanic $200 to install them. I kept the old air compressor in place so I would have an air source handy for adding air to tires or inflating toys, etc."

Anonymous, AL (2004 GMC Envoy XL 5.3-L V8)

"Air system compressor failed and replaced. After replacement a slow pressure leak caused the compressor to run when vehicle was parked for a period.,Dashboard instrument panel replaced. speedometer failed.. Rear window and tailgate failed twice due rust on electrical connections. Battery drained a previously stated."

Warren B., PA (2004 GMC Envoy XUV 5.3-L V8)

"The standard load leveling system, using air springs, has finally failed after 15 years. It has been a great system but, considering the age of the vehicle and the cost of replacement, I am going to replace the air system with conventional coil springs and shocks (kits are made for this purpose), at a price of about $600."

Transmission rebuild or replacement

"Transmission failure was sudden with little warning and total. It occurred a day or two after having towed it (behind my RV) so it may have been caused by a failure of my after market installed transmission pump. It is with deep regret that I report this failure because I hate to loose the vehicle - perhaps the best I have ever owned. Estimated cast of repair by GMC is $4,000"

That was about the last thing I expected to have trouble with on a GMC. Getting it rebuilt and getting the rebuilt transmission was a nightmare that lasted over a year. I expect better from GMC especially since I never drive off road or on a farm, just plan old city streets and highways. I didn't pay $30+k for the transmission to go out before 250k miles"

So I dropped it off that evening to be rebuilt."
