GM's full-sized Sierra and similar Chevrolet Silverado improved markedly last year. Compared with the last generation, engines are smaller but more powerful and economical. The ride is more comfortable, and the design of the interior is more refined. In extended-cab models, the rear seating has improved dramatically. A fourth door is available for 2000.

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for over 300,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2021 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"I bought this vehicle new 17 years ago and the clear coat started peeling off after sitting outside in the weather for 17 year. I had it painted and it now looks brand new"

Harold S., KY (2000 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 5.3-L V8)

"Hood paint is pealing"

Craig C., NC (2000 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 4.7-L V8)

"The pain on the hood as started to plear"

Leslie E., UT (2000 GMC Sierra 1500 SL 4.7-L V8)

"I find it appalling that car manufacturing companies put such lousy paint jobs on these vehicles. My truck would look like new if not for the clearcoat and paint deterioration on the hood, roof and top side rear fenders (I have the sport side rear wheel fenders). For that reason I would not purchase another GMC. I take care of my vehicles and drive them a long time, and should have to spend thousands to have the truck repainted to look like presentable."

Anonymous, FL (2000 GMC Sierra 1500 SL 4.3-L V6)

"Paint cracked and pealed"

Anonymous, AZ (2000 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 4.7-L V8)
Rust

"No significant rust problem until holes in the bed caused frame to start rusting about a year ago. Remarkable how many years it took for rust to start causing problems. Would have lasted longer if more attention to maintenance was performed"

Anonymous, MD (2000 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 5.3-L V8)

"There is quite a bit of rust all along the bottom and it was only outside for one year of it's life"

Anonymous, MN (2000 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)

"Rust below all doors in the rocker panels"

Anonymous, WV (2000 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 5.3-L V8)

"All wheel wells and rocker panels had to be replaced"

John F., ME (2000 GMC Sierra 1500 SL 5.3-L V8)

Anonymous, WI (2000 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 5.3-L V8)

"I caused the rusting by putting the truck in a snow pile in my side yard."

Allen T., UT (2000 GMC Sierra 1500 6.0-L V8)

"very loose steering experience"

Gary L., OK (2000 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 5.3-L V8)

"Because of the faulty design, the steering column bearing gets hot from the engine compartment and causes the grease in the bearing to break down and the column becomes somewhat lose feeling and when going over any bump or when coming to a stop and turning the steering wheel has a small clunk feel. I had the first one fixed while still under warranty at about 28,000 miles. And it happened again after warranty, and was told by service rep it was because of the faulty design, so it looks like I would have to pay every time it goes bad.
