If not for its disappointing reliability record, this competent pickup would be a Consumer Reports recommended model. The interior is quiet and roomy, handling and braking are good for a truck, and four-wheel ABS is standard. The four-door extended-cab versions are also the only such pickups with habitable rear seats. The front seats are large but not well shaped.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"With over 216500 miles on it, it still has great acceleration, and now that I replaced the worn rack and pinion system, it's back like new. Great handling."

LEE B., NC (2002 GMC Sierra 1500)

"This truck has the 4.8 smaller V-8 that is usually found on the GM trucks. It has less HP by a few (270) but runs like a scalded dog in acceleration runs. I've tried it a few times over the years (bought it new) and it's still super quick (0-60 in 6.0 seconds). I drive it usually around town so the MPG's is wonderful but on the open road where transmission remains locked in OD, I've exceeded 21 many times and 22 a few times. Most full size gas engine trucks cannot do that."

Anonymous, KY (2002 GMC Sierra 1500)

"very good acceleration for full sized truck. gas mileage with the 4.8 ltr. v8 is around 20 mpg on highway. seats are very comfortable."

April H., WI (2002 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Good power. Not as light in the rear end as other trucks I have owned."

Richard S., AL (2002 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Truck still runs good for the age and miles. No major problems other than regular maintenance. Started off with synthetic oil and have had no engine problems, and does not use any oil between changes."

Anonymous, TX (2002 GMC Sierra 1500)

"My Sierra has the 4.3 litre Vortec engine and it has a real lack of power when accelerating to highway speeds"

Michael L., BC (2002 GMC Sierra 1500)

"For a truck the acceleration is alright for such a heavy vehicle and is firm and positive, but not a race car!!"

Anonymous, CA (2002 GMC Sierra 1500)

"After 350000 kms, engine uses no oil, acceleration is excellent, drive is responsive. truck still tows a 3500 lb. trailer with ease."

Alan B., ON (2002 GMC Sierra 1500)

"4.8L with trailer tow package, still a rubber band on the hills of the highways. Flowmaster exhaust and cold air intake helped immensely with the power without killing mileage. Why can't the manufacturers do this????"

Ron K., MO (2002 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Bought this truck new, still a joy to dive, handles as it when new."

Donnia C., IN (2002 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Gm does not know or want to rust proof or protect a vehicle , all brake and fuel lines had to be replaced, rockers all rusted Thur and had to be replaced, they have a very good rust coating but on the 2002 it looks like it was spray on with a water gun by a five year old, and on the 2013 it peels off in sheets, why can other manufacturers rust proof a vehicle eg. Audi which I use as a winter car and does not rust?"

Anonymous, NY (2002 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Acceleration is very good. High profile and soft ride is too soft for good cornering."

James B., CA (2002 GMC Sierra 1500)

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Front seats are awesome. Dual lumbar, 12 way power seats. Extended cab develops lots of wind noise over time. Have had seals replaced, doors readjusted, but doesn't help much after the so many years. Absolutely LOVE the 4 wheel steering. So sad they did away with it. Can turn in the space a small car can. No other trucks can come close to that."

Gregory S., IN (2002 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Well designed seating, comfortable when driving long distance, noise is low at interstate levels of travel too."

Donnia C., IN (2002 GMC Sierra 1500)

"8-way adjustable front seats with adjustable lumbar support are very comfortable. It rides and handles like a truck."

James B., CA (2002 GMC Sierra 1500)

"seats are very comfortable"

Anonymous, WI (2002 GMC Sierra 1500)

Anonymous, IL (2002 GMC Sierra 1500)

Steve T., NM (2002 GMC Sierra 1500)
