The GMC Sierra (and its Chevrolet Silverado twin) has changed little since its 1999 debut. Our tested Z71 Silverado had a stiff, choppy ride--other trim lines ride slightly better. Braking is adequate, and fit and finish are unimpressive. The powertrain isn't as smooth as competing models from Toyota or Nissan. The Sierra's assets are a selectable, full-time, four-wheel-drive system and a generous load capacity.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Anonymous, AB (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Batteries greatly assist excelleration. it's a hybrid"

Anonymous, CA (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Drives and handles excellent. Acceleration is good. Gas mileage is poor. All wheel drive is excellent in the snow."

Anonymous, WA (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Really handles well for a truck"

Anonymous, WI (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Drive train has been problem free."

Joshua H., ME (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Accelerates very well and handles great"

BENNY R., OK (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"The acceleration is good even with the 5th Wheel. After a few modifications the handling is excellent. Example: raised the front so it is even with back which improved cornering. Before it used to plow through corners."

JACK K., CA (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"For a truck, the handling is good. it drives llke a car."

ROGER L., IL (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Great AWD acceleration. It's truck, pot holes can knock you out of alignment."

JESSE B., AL (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Easy smooth handling. Feels less like a truck than previously owned truck."

Regina R., SC (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Acceleration is a bit anemic."

Anonymous, OK (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Acceleration and handling is great. Fuel economy not so good (11 MPG) due to the larger tires and heavier suspension."

Anonymous, WA (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"The 5.3 litre V8 in this truck has average power but runs at about 4000 rpm when pulling hard. The cruise control seems to hold the rpm high longer than is necessary which I find annoying. The engine and auto transmission are still working as well as new."

James B., AB (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"6 cylinder a little sluggish"

Anonymous, IL (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Easy to drive....quick to respond. Great acceleration"

Anonymous, FL (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

Anonymous, AB (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Very comfortable ride even in the back seat. Noise level is very low."

Julia I., OR (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"there is no lumbar support in the passenger seat, other than that we have no complaint about the comfort, noise and ride of this vehicle."

Anonymous, SK (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"The truck is comfortable, drives well and is still virtually rattle free. It has it's issues, ac blows hot and have to restart get it cooling again. I like the hight of the bed and ease of entry and exit. Don't care for the hieght of newer trucks."

David L., LA (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Road noise extremely loud."

V S., FL (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"On long trips this is our go to vehicle. Our family of four including an 80 pound dog all fit comfortably with plenty of storage in the bed for luggage. The Sierra glides down the hiway with ease and on long trips the seats are supportive and very comfortable."

Ron F., NY (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"We have the one with leather seats, electric adjustments on the driver and rider, and it is so nice."

Anonymous, WI (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"comfortable ride, good acceleration, good appearance"

BENNY R., OK (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Great seats, climate controls,"

STCLAIR T., MD (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Seats are good for an eight hour road trip. Auto A/C kicks on just set your individual temps."

JESSE B., AL (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Dash rattles. Open/close valve going bad, again fro 2nd time. Overall, no major complaints considering truck has 98,000 miles on it."

R R., TX (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"For its age is has heated seats with lumbar. For a truck it ride nicely. But, truck was purchased to haul a 5th Wheel and that is what it is used for."

JACK K., CA (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"The seats are NOT very comfortable, the dual-zone air conditioning is prone to making toe-tapping noises while it tries to establish the positions of the various vent doors, and it occasionally goes hysterical, blasting one side with hot air and the other side with cold air while refusing to respond to any of the climate controls - the only solution is to shut off the engine and restart it. It has also gone through three blower motor resistors. For a pickup it actually rides fairly well and is"

DAVID R., ON (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"The truck rides a little stiff with the Z71 package but handles very well loaded and in tight turns it stays level. I am still happy with the ride and handling."

James B., AB (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Front seating has been exceptional making driving this vehicle a joy. The back seat comfort would be better if the seat could recline. Road noise is average. I do have mud and snow tires on the vehicle which does make some noise. The ride of this vehicle is fantastic. One reason is because you sit higher and can see the traffic ahead much better than a standard car. A 6" lift kit has been added along with heavier suspension."

Anonymous, WA (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Very com fortable....quiet....quick to repond."

Anonymous, FL (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Like the truck ride"

Anonymous, IL (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Comfortable ride even with stiff (Z21) suspension. Excellent seats."

Anonymous, FL (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"I have had this vehicle since new and it only let me down once in twelve years when I lost my transmission at 175,000 miles. Total repair was $3,500 at the GMC dealer for a factory new unit with a full 3 year 36,000 mile warranty. Since I haven't had a payment in several years this was a minor investment in my opion on a vehicle that has done everything I've asked of it. For the cost of the repair I could have never replaced the truck so it was a good decision."

Ron F., NY (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"A good all around truck"

ROGER L., IL (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"There seems to be a bit more standard equipment on the Canadian model that as far as I can make out is optional on the U.S. version - perhaps in the smaller market they just didn't want to offer as many packaged variations. The 5.3 litre engine is reasonably powerful and not extravagant in its use of fuel. And the truck is now twelve years old with over 270,000 km and still going strong."

DAVID R., ON (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"I had a short list of desirables when shopping and a price range. This truck made the grade. The quality is enough to satisfy me for now, but I'm beginning to yearn for some of the more modern goodies in current models even though this truck could last me many more years."

ALLAN J., FL (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"it is the best darn pick-up i have ever owned"

JOHN L., CA (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"We got a truck with most of the conveniences available at the time for a great price by waiting until end of the season and catching a sale."

Regina R., SC (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Best damn vehicle I ever purchased !"

John L., CA (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Good reliability, but would like better fuel economy."

Anonymous, FL (2005 GMC Sierra 1500)
