This full-sized pickup truck is the Chevrolet Silverado's twin. The Sierra retains the previous model's selectable, full-time, four-wheel-drive system and a generous load capacity. Electronic stability control is standard in the crew-cab model but optional in the extended cab. The new truck has more responsive handling and a steadier ride, but the 5.3-liter V8 isn't very refined.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Susan A., MA (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Towing. I routinely haul a 22ft, bay boat on a steel, tandem axle trailer, often loading on steep, wet ramps. My Sierra is well suited for the task providing a comfortable & confident ride for both my wife & me."

Anonymous, TX (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"The 6.0 liter engine handles all driving situations with ease and a sense of power. I never have the feeling that the vehicle is nearing the end of its power range, The steering is precise and easy to use."

H S., CA (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Has good acceleration and handles well. Does have a lag when accelerating."

Clinton B., NY (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"It's good."

Anonymous, NY (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"I have been very pleased with the performance and handling of my GMC. As a Kid, it was always a dream of my to own a standard cab with a short bed. I always thought they looked cool. My vehicle is a rear wheel drive only, but in order to get the lock up rear end, I needed to order the Z71 package. I like the cool decal, but the ride is somewhat harsh with it's short wheel base. I past the age of 70 and still love the truck."

Martin P., KS (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Mpg can be very good if i drove more conservatively, but i don't i push it hard,i don't speed,but i go...on cruise Ive seen 32 mpg on 4 cyl.and i see 8/9/10 around town..I've only drove GM/GMC SENSE H.SCHOOL '63. BOUGHT,;LEASED FROM 93 TO 08?????"

Alden G., IN (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Handles great, feel safe, great stability on wet & snowy roads"

Anonymous, PA (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"acceleration still good after 150,000 miles but suspension getting loose"

Anonymous, MD (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"The truck has lots of power, pulls a loaded trailer with good stability giving driver confidence. It feels that the truck sits lower than others and is very stable in the corners."

Anonymous, BC (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"It rides beautifully! Even better than our friend's Chevy SUV!"

Anonymous, VA (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"This vehicle has a 6 speed automatic transmission and the largest V8 engine GM makes yet get very respectable gas mileage."

Anonymous, AZ (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Acceleration seems sluggish for a V8. 4 speed tranny doesn't help in that area. Should have got regular Differential instead of hauler."

Anonymous, MO (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"It is easy to drive and very comfortable. Handles very well and accelerates strong."

DUANE F., CO (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"4.9 liter engine just not enough power while towing, pulling grades, entering interstates.,"

ERNIE G., OH (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Added good all weather tires, gets very good mileage even when towing a trailer."

Anonymous, CO (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"decent acceleration"

Anonymous, BC (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Steering is very responsive. For the year & being a truck, it gets better gas mileage than I had expected."

Anonymous, MI (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Ease of driving and handling"

Anonymous, IA (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Good adjustments available in the large seats.the truck is quite and smooth."

Anonymous, BC (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Ride, leather seatsare very comfortable on long drives, ride, handling, acceleration is very good we have a older camper 8000 lbs/26ft pulls it with no problems even in over drive, (it has a towing mode) i don't use it. I get 10 mpg,it even drops into 4 cylinder mode towing the camper! My friend who drives Fords has a 150 4x4 really liked driving it!!?? Go figure that one"

Alden G., IN (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Considering we bought this used, the seats are very comfortable, rides nice/smooth and quiet."

Cynthia N., MD (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"The GMC Sierra is very comfortable on long road trips. It is quiet and smooth riding with plenty of power when needed."

Mark G., IN (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"The interior of the cab is very well done, but the cab is constantly noisy over all but the very smoothest roads. It sounds like everything inside it is loose."

H S., CA (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"IMPORTANT READ THIS: (Am I the only one?) GMC Sierra 1500 Truck was meticulously maintained, and NEVER abused. With only 36000 miles on it the wheel bearings went bad on driver's side, stranding me very far from home necessitating expensive tow. Dealership and GMC both basically said "hey, it's out of warranty". Neither did anything to help with this cost on something that shouldn't have gone bad so soon. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER GMC or CHEVY VEHICLE AGAIN. I AM LOOKING TO BUY HYUNDAI, OR SUBARU, OR PERHAPS TOYOTA. GMC left me with a large expensive repair on something that shouldn't have gone bad so soon. They didn't care, and didn't answer my letter I wrote them. DID NOT STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT! When you spend 28,000 on a vehicle and take very good care of it, some things should just last. I replaced the bearings with GENUINE GMC parts and was told they were warrantied for 90-days!!! I had the other side replaced to prevent this from happening again using a MOOG part. Cost of part $75.00 more. LIFETIME warranty. Tells you a lot about what GMC considers "professional grade"! What a load of crap. VERY DISSATISFIED. Also--though I have learned to live with this--one of the tires ALWAYS leaks air. Had truck in to have this checked and new valve stem put on and tire remounted. Still leaks. Leaked since about a year after I bought the truck. Could all this be junk steel? I will never buy American just to buy American again. I will check with CR and any other sources before making my choice. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE."

Anonymous, OH (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Entry to cabin is very good. Seats are of good quality and the leather is still in good shape. The seats are very comfortable for long trips and short city driving. Road and outside air noise are tolerable but very noticeable."

Clinton B., NY (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"this truck rides like a car, noise level not terrible , a little wind noise when windows open, seats have full positioning controls and are very comfortable"

Susan A., MA (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Cools and heats almost instantly. Comfotable ride...seats are very comfortable on long rides. Cab has plenty of head and leg room....we are both tall. Not noisy in the cab. Used it for long trips and was a good experience. Just recently the climate control went crazy and would sometimes blow hot air on the driver side while blowing cold on the passenger side. Had the controls reset and now seems to be okay."

E P., CA (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Seat is about 1 inch too high. Does not slide back far enough for me (under 6 feet) to place legs comfortablly"

Anonymous, MO (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"legroom"

Anonymous, NE (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"The ride is smooth, quiet, comfortable seats. Handling is responsive and road feel is excellent"

Anonymous, BC (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Seats are comfortable"

Anonymous, MS (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Great seats Very good looking truck. Noise level acceptable."

Clinton B., NY (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"It rides well for a truck. The front seats could be a bit more supporting in the seat pan and upright back support. Overall not too bad really, I have driven long distances with this truck and its fine. Interior space is great, very roomy lots of space, interior noise is very quiet."

Jeffrey K., CT (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"They are leather heated seats"

Anonymous, ME (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"LOVE this truck. Prefer to take it on trips. It has an awesome ride, comfortable seats and you sit up where you can see everything. The only thing I don't like about it is my inability to park. It's a big vehicle with a long wheel base and large turning radius. Hard to park but you can't have everything."

What Owners Say

"great truck so far, great paint"

Dennis W., FL (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"With about 36,000 miles on it, I had a major problem that caused a tow fee from a great distance. The wheel bearings went on the driver side. Vehicle very well taken care of. Never abused. I had to pay all of the repair on a part that should have lasted much much longer! The attitude from GMC was--hey it's out of warranty. Sooo if my very well maintained and well cared for GMC truck splits in two while I'm driving it down the road, I would anticipate the same response. "Hey its out of warranty". THAT IS NOT CUSTOMER SERVICE. THAT IS NOT HOW CUSTOMERS SHOULD BE TREATED. THAT SENDS THE MESSAGE: "Buy Hyundai" or "Buy Toyota". "Professional Grade", hogwash. Big company that doesn't care about the customer. How should this have been handled? OK, I pay the tow, but the repair part and labor should have been absorbed by GMC somewhere. Wheel bearings shouldn't just fail with that few miles. Some things should last. I get it, things wear out. But some things shouldn't wear out for quite some time. GMC has set a new bar for the definition of "professional grade". It's low, graded on a curve, based on profit and not quality."

Anonymous, OH (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"good truck for off road work and durable"

Anonymous, MD (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Had to replace the engine @ 105000 miles. Started having lifter problems @ 80000 miles. GM would not admit they have a problem with that engine... would not cover anything!"

Anonymous, PA (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Great value for the options I received. Rides very nice and comfortable."

DARREN K., CA (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Very good truck. Have not had any problems other than routine maintenance. This truck does have an airbag recall."

Anonymous, KS (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Great pickup, well made, very good body integrity. Very comfortable to drive or ride in."

E P., CA (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"The body is bad but the rest of the truck is excellent sensors stink"

Anonymous, ME (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Today, we'd have to pay at least $10k more for a similar new vehicle and this vehicle still looks and runs great. I regularly tow a 5500lb combination boat, motor and trailer load decked out for fishing at the Coast. This vehicle tows it well, even with four adults riding in the cab and gear in the bed."

Anonymous, TX (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Excellent value. 250,000 miles and almost no problems"

Anonymous, SC (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"after rebate in 2008,this was a lot of truck for the final cost"

I M., WA (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

Styling

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"The paint job is faded badly, cruise control won't stay on, and the door lock actuator had to be replace on front driver door and now the driver side back door needs to be replace. All these thing I researched and it's very common on this truck. I would think there would be a recall. Beside these items, the truck runs good, body style is nice before paint faded. The ride is smooth and has decent power."

Anonymous, AZ (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"The body style - exterior and interior - is attractive."

DONALD P., PA (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Inside materials seemed cheaper than they should be in comparison to ford especially."

Anonymous, TX (2008 GMC Sierra 1500)
