This full-sized pickup truck is the Chevrolet Silverado's twin. The Sierra retains the previous model's selectable, full-time, four-wheel-drive system and a generous load capacity. Electronic stability control is standard in the crew-cab model but optional in the extended cab. The new truck has more responsive handling and a steadier ride, but the 5.3-liter V8 isn't very refined.

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for over 300,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2021 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Loose interior trim or moldings

"The plastic dashboard is breaking apart while just sitting still in the driveway most of the time (I find fragments of the dash in my floorboard when I enter the vehicle). My concern is if the passenger side airbag deploys, it could send fragments of plastic that is deteriorating flying through the air and strike anyone in the truck. The driver's side airbag should not do this since it is in the steering column, but I did receive a recall notice on my airbags over a year ago and was told that"

"at about 35,00 miles the Navigation Audio System 2/touch screen, CD/MP3 Format (replaced STD/OPT Radio went). The whole system went down. The dealer/manufacturer didn't offer repair, only replacement at $2,900 and was not on warranty. This system includes the radio/CD player as well. Had dealer do ALL maintenance and complained so loudly they convinced GMC to sell it to me for cost!? $1500. I had no choice so went with it. The navigation system failed two years later and now having problems with my CD player. It just quit working several months ago and started up again after a couple weeks, worked for 708 weeks. Now it's not working again. Also: transmission shift slow (as though slipping) has done so since new. Dealer said there was nothing wrong with it (irritating but not a deal killer. William B., NH (2008 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 5.3-L V8)

"Both rear door handles broke at the attachment point"

Timothy S., CA (2008 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)

"The door latches on the GMC trucks and Vans I own all have similar problems with door handles braking after several years of use. The handles are plastic and I believe the problems stem from the fact that all of these Large trucks are not garaged and the California sun and Plastic Door Handles are not a good match. Overall the GMC / CHEVROLET trucks I own are reliable work vehicles that last hundreds of thousands of miles... but the paint sucks!"

Vickie O., CA (2008 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)

Engine rebuild or replacement

"Engine completely failed. Required replacement. Maintenance history was as recommended by OEM. This truck has had multiple problems"

Anonymous, (2008 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 5.3-L V8)

"Engine knock started at 97000 miles. Oil consumption due to poor PVC design. Poor oil pump spring created oil starvation at start up and acceleration. Caused excessive wear on engine bearing. Worn engine bearings caused low oil pressure, causing truck engine to run hot. Result blown engine, cracked piston head, spun cam bearing, spun connecting rod bearing, spun main bearing."

Anonymous, NJ (2008 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)

"engine failure due to roller lifters damaging cam(or crank)shaft started displaying weird messages on dash service traction control and others off and on for a few months then started making funny noises off and on my soninlaw ( a mechanic ) said it was the bad lifters in that particular motor that drops from 8 cylinders to 4. we opted for a new remaned Jasper motor instead of the labor to tear mine apart and reassemble"

Susan A., MA (2008 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 5.3-L V8)

"After the oil pump let go and was replaced there was a ticking noise for a few months before it got worse and engine started misfiring and we pulled engine apart to find a bad lifter(on of the ones that shuts off the 8 cylinders to 4) and it had damaged the crankshaft . decided to get a rebuilt Jasper engine instead of fixing the old one due to possibility of other problems with metal peices being inside the engine and causing further damage after it was reassembled. we are actually awaiting new engine now"

Susan A., MA (2008 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 5.3-L V8)

"Replaced engine after 200,000"

John I., PA (2008 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 5.3-L V8)

"car make noises when starting out getting into drive"

Power Equipment

Cruise control, clock, warning lights, body control module, keyless entry, wiper motor or washer, tire pressure monitor, interior or exterior lights, horn, gauges, 12V power plug, remote engine start, alarm or security system

What Owners Say

Battery (not hybrid or electric)

"Due to the amounts of electrical components in this truck, the rated battery CCA is insufficient. Battery would always die prematurely. Vehicle could not sit for more than 2 days. BCM (Body Control Module) needed reflash/update from dealer, as it would not go into sleep/shutdown mode. This would cause excessive battery drain. After reflash problem not as bad. Issue only became worse during cold temos in winter. The long term fix was dual battery setup with ACDelco AGM batteries. Truck was very reliable after this setup."

Anonymous, NJ (2008 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)
