The Sierra and its Chevrolet Silverado twin are well-rounded pickups with an available full-time 4WD system and generous payload capacity. Ride quality is decent with the Z85 suspension and handling is secure with standard ESC. High-end models have very good interior fit and finish, but all have simple controls. A luxurious Sierra Denali model has permanent AWD and a powerful 6.2-liter V8.

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for over 300,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2021 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

What Owners Say

Loose exterior trim or moldings

Darin L., TX (2009 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)

"The top of the dash board has large cracks in two places. One started 5 years ago, the second more recently. I park in the shade and have window visors to the windows are cracked open in the summer to prevent over heating the interior."

Ralph M., LA (2009 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 5.3-L V8)
Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"Body colored door trim protectors fade and discolor. This started several years ago. My truck is usually garaged, so it is not exposed to that much sun. All other plastic trim is fine. Only the horizontal door ding protectors which are the same color"

"Paint is flaking off around the rear wheel wells"

Anonymous, ON (2009 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 5.3-L V8)
Rust

"I have had rust start under the paint over the wheel wells. so much that the paint bubbled up with water. I have had to have it to the body shop 2ce to replace metal and re-paint costing me $4000 Very disapointed in the workmanship since I have so few miles on this truck and stored it for 2 winters"

Bonnie M., IL (2009 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)

"The rust has started to be visible in many areas but the box sides and especially the wheel wells are rotting from inside out."

Robert B., NY (2009 GMC Sierra 1500 WT 5.3-L V8)

"Rear wheel well paint peeling/rust. Tailgate paint paint peeling/rust. Driver's side rear door paint bubbling/ rust"

Brian N., ON (2009 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 5.3-L V8)

"All similar trucks rust over the wheel wells from the inside out. The paint starts to bubble but its water inside the blister. We had the metal cut out and new put in but everywhere we didnt replace its starting to do it again"

Anonymous, IL (2009 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)

"noticed the paint blistering on the driver side rear wheel well. rusting from the inside out, road salt and dirt collects in the wheel area. the mud guards in the wheel well area don't protect this area from collecting dirt/salt etc. like the front wheel wells do. poor design."

Anonymous, ON (2009 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 5.3-L V8)

"Like all trucks made around this time it rusts underneath the paint just over the wheel well. The water gets between the 2 pieces of metal & the rust comes through the paint. I had to pay 2000 to repair this issue before it rusted through the metal"

Bonnie M., IL (2009 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)

I was returning from a trip and thought I noticed an odd noise two or three times while driving but couldn't hear anything when I turned off the radio and listened. When I made a turn at an interchange about 15 miles from home, however, the noise was constant and horrible. I made it home but had my truck towed to the service center. The repairs included ball joints, wheel bearings and brakes plus alignment. I'd have not expected that significant of a repair being needed after 90,000 miles on the vehicle."

What Owners Say

Overheating

"I believe it is related to electrical or computer problem the dealer is unable to resolve"

Evan S., IN (2009 GMC Sierra 1500 WT 4.3-L V6)
Radiator

"smelled antifreeze but couldn't see a leak. Radiator and oil cooler were both leaking and required replacement"

Anonymous, NJ (2009 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 5.3-L V8)

Power Equipment

Cruise control, clock, warning lights, body control module, keyless entry, wiper motor or washer, tire pressure monitor, interior or exterior lights, horn, gauges, 12V power plug, remote engine start, alarm or security system

What Owners Say

Spark plugs or wires failure

"Because this vehicle is equipped with the Active Fuel management system, it allows excess oil to leak into the cylinders and foul the plugs. Then when the cylinders are turned back on, they burn the oil and the burnt oil makes the computer to put my energy into making a spark because it's not firing hot enough. Eventually the coil pack for the cylinder fails. This will be the last AFM vehicle I buy."

Frank A., IL (2009 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 5.3-L V8)

"# 7 spark plug bad, replaced all 8 coils"

Anonymous, TX (2009 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)
