The Sierra has been a good choice for years, and the redesigned 2014 version is an even better performer. With this overhaul, the model landed some solid punches in the ongoing pickup wars. Handling is more carlike than in most others and the cabin is as quiet as a luxury car's. An assist system makes the tailgate easy to lift and prevents it from dropping open, easing cargo-handling duties.

"AC compressor failed at 42000"

Anonymous, KS (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 5.3-L V8)

"Seal leak so the Freon leaked out!"

Bruce F., CA (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)

"Compressor went out at 70000 miles. $1300 repair cost. Also shocks had to be replaced for $1000."

Anonymous, CO (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 5.3-L V8)

"A/C Condenser failure at 65,000 miles"

Anonymous, CA (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 5.3-L V8)
Automatic climate control

"AC has failed being looked at it on thursday may 11th"

Richard M., NH (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 5.3-L V8)

"When the heat is on it doesn't always work- very inconsistent"

Matthew H., ME (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SL 5.3-L V8)
Blower (fan) motor

"It doesn't always adjust appropriately, I.E. when you turn the blower down, it doesn't always go down"

Matthew H., ME (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SL 5.3-L V8)
Condenser

"101145 Condenser leaks refrigerant, had to be replaced. Cost about 1200 dollars"

Anonymous, GA (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)

"I told the dealer service department while there for routine maintenance that the cooling system was cooling properly and that it was either low on Freon or overcharged, but most likely low as it was short cycling the compressor. I further told them it may be a bad pressure switch either high or low, kicking off the compressor. I was told They didn't think so as it was only on the road for 10 months. After checking they told me the condenser was bad. They fixed that. 16 months later it was the evaporator, they fixed that."

Anonymous, PA (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)

"The condenser had a leak in one of the welded joints and was known to have problems but because I had 1500 miles past the warrantee the dealer wanted to charge me $1400 to fix it. I replaced the part myself with the help of youtube for less than $100"

Anonymous, GA (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)

"The condenser failure in these vehicles is a common problem that is expensive to fix ($1500). Parts are scare as the problem is common. GM has extended the warranty for this part in Suburban, Tahoe, Escalade SUVs, but not the pick up trucks that have the exact same running gear. I believe the the condenser failure is a design or manufacturing defect. I understand that the condenser allows water into the system, and when it gets cold enough in the winter, the water turns to ice and cracks the fitting at the front of the condenser, requiring the condenser to be replaced. To repair the condenser, the radiator has to be removed... it turns out to be a very labour intensive procedure. I've been waiting for a replacement condenser for 2 months now. It's July now and I really miss the air conditioner."

Anonymous, (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 6.2-L V8)

"Condenser developed a leak caused by a crack in a corner weld. Dealer said it was a common problem."

Anonymous, LA (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)

"Condenser cracked at welds. Refrigerant leaked out."

Bruce D., ON (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SL 5.3-L V8)

"it had a leak and had to be replaced"

Anonymous, IL (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 5.3-L V8)

"Air conditioning stopped working, AC Condenser had a leak and had to be replaced with a new unit. $1100 repair covered by extended warranty."

Mark G., CA (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)

"Condenser developed a leak. Dealer replaced. Warranty covered."

Anonymous, IL (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)
Evaporator

"after the condenser went bad and was replaced, 16 to 18 months later the ac was functioning properly again. I told them at the dealer service dept. it was again low on Freon. They did a leak check and pressure check and found that the evaporator was leaking. They fixed it and it was better than when I purchased it."

Anonymous, PA (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)

"A/C evaporator core started leaking (30 days after warranty ended) and had to be replaced."

Anonymous, FL (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SL 5.3-L V8)

"GM picked up half of expense"

Anonymous, IL (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)
Heater system

Anonymous, GA (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)

"Heat was not working due to lack of coolant and radiator not working properly"

Anonymous, SK (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 5.3-L V8)
Refrigerant leaks

"leaky connections"

Ed M., TX (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)

"radiator had to be replaced"

Anonymous, NC (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 5.3-L V8)

"Radiator was leaking and could not be repaired so we had to replace it with a new one. Radiator hoses also leaking and had to replaced. Noticed issues when the truck was heating in -30C weather. Lack of coolant was the cause. Easy fix but fairly pricey!"

Anonymous, SK (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 5.3-L V8)

"AC quit cooling. Leak found in condenser and was replaced under warranty."

Anonymous, CA (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 5.3-L V8)

"I have had to put a few cans of leak stop and refrigerant in the truck to fix the issue. If it continues I will have to take it in for service soon."

Anonymous, (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 Unsure 6.2-L V8)

"The refrigerant leaked out due to the cracks in the condenser."

Bruce D., ON (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SL 5.3-L V8)

"Condensor was leaking and had to be changed. Clutch dust all over compressor so it was changed as well."

Brian A., FL (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SL 5.3-L V8)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Rough shifting

"Only applies to 6.2l engine with 8-speed automatic. GM identified rough shifting issue due to defective torque convertor as shipped from factory. Second (related) issue is with leaking valve within transmission causing rough engagement from neutral to drive. If engine is off for 30 minutes, valve wouldn't hold pressure leading to slip "thunk" upon next transition from P or N to D. Both items are now covered under a GM technical bulletin"

Brian H., NC (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 6.2-L V8)

"Horrible transmission. Always hunting for the right gear. Jerky and punchy. It's been to the dealer for a reflash and that improves things a tiny bit for a short time. Worst truck I've ever owned because of how it shifts"

Mark S., CA (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)

"vehicle surges at low speed like it is trying to decide what gear it wants to be in"

William C., TX (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)

"Hard shifting starting and Down shifting . You can feel it driving and the passenger can feel also.Around 4 to 6 times in 2 years"

Anonymous, GA (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)

"Occasionally shifts rough not every time I drive it. Once chirped tires due to this"

Anonymous, CA (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 6.2-L V8)

"The 8 speed transmission performance is simply awful. It will frequently hesitate. If I accelerate lightly from a stop, then abruptly lift off the throttle, there is a short lag then the transmission will SLAM into gear so hard it feels like the vehicle was rear-ended. Upshifts are often jerky and the drivetrain "clunks" and pops and snaps constantly. The dealership said there is nothing wrong with it"

Mark N., TX (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 6.2-L V8)

"SHIFTS HARD WHILE GOING INTO REVERSE"

Jeff I., LA (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)

"There is an ongoing problem between 2nd and 3rd gear that the deslership cannot verify (transmission warm but not operating temperature)"

Donald A., ON (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 4.3-L V6)

"Truck continues to have rough shifting. I brought to the dealer and they say that's the way it is supposed to be. It's nothing like any other vehicle I've ever driven"

Anonymous, CT (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 6.2-L V8)

"See previous comment on severe SHUDDER when transmission transitions 6 to 7 and 7 to 6 gears."

Anonymous, MI (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)

"Had this problem since new. Extremely rough shifting With the 8 speed transmission. Had it in shop a number of times; had the computer reset, the transmission oil replaced. About 8 months ago GM started using a Mobil 1 transmission fluid. While this has improved the shift quality, it is not perfect, and will on occasion shift very violently. It's extremely frustrating given the cost of the vehicle and the potential cost of replacing the transmission."

Anonymous, (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 6.2-L V8)

"Shifts rough and at inappropriate times. Sometimes "clunks" so hard a passenger will comment what was that ?"

Anonymous, TX (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 6.2-L V8)

"The truck makes a loud noise when putting it into reverse. It has been taken to the dealership multiple times and they cannot find anything wrong with it."

Anonymous, SD (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 Unsure 6.2-L V8)

"Warranty transmission fluid flush"

Anonymous, MI (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 6.2-L V8)

"About a year ago, the transmission seemed to be "clunking" in the low gears. This has since been resolved."

Anonymous, (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 6.2-L V8)

"This transmission shifted poorly from the day I took it home. Over time it worsened until it hesitated & jerked into reverse. Dealer reprogrammed it, which helped for several months. But it is deteriorating into rougher shifting again..."

Anonymous, AR (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)

"Dealer stated that error codes related to cylinder misfires but later said it was transmission related."

Lyn R., IA (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 6.2-L V8)

"Rough up and down shifting"

Anonymous, SD (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 6.2-L V8)
Slipping transmission

"It jerks and almost got me killed crossing a 600ft high bridge"

Patrick S., LA (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 5.3-L V8)
Transmission computer

"Vehicle locked into 4WD while trying to parallel park. Vehicle was 2 weeks old at the time. Dealer immediately fixed problem with a software update and haven't had any problems since. Concern was having to drive 50 miles in 4WD to get to dealer"

Anonymous, OH (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)

"Transmission holds too high a gear at low speeds causing the truck to hesitate or shutter"

Anonymous, TN (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)

"The transmission computer just doesn't know what to do sometimes and results in some shift grabbing (hard shifting) and is particularly rough when a drive gear is selected when the transmission is cold. I predict the transmission or parts of the power train won't make 75,000 miles. It is tearing itself apart!"

Allan G., WA (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)

"The transmission computer occasionally gets confused and disengages and then abruptly reengages to the engine making a rather violent shift and vehicle lurch. It has done this since the vehicle was new. The transmission otherwise works well."

Anonymous, WA (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)

Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, clutch replacement.

What Owners Say

Torque converter

"after repeated visits to service dept for poor shifting and vibration dealer decided to replace torque converter. Problems are better but poor shifting and driveline noise are still present. Dealer says poor shifting cannot be fixed"

Kevin K., TX (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 6.2-L V8)

"started slipping and dealer replace it under warranty"

William C., TX (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)

"Vehicle had a shutter while driving at 55-70 mph. Reported to dealer, the found the bulletin on the torque converter and replaced it. The vehicle now drive like a new vehicle. Very happy"

Anonymous, WI (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 6.2-L V8)

"Reported to dealer I had a vibration at driving speeds and the vibration varied on the same roads. There was a bulletin and the dealer replaced the torque converter under warranty. Very happy, vehicle is like new"

Anonymous, WI (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 6.2-L V8)

"There was a software update and the transmission continues to shift rough when it is cold now"

Todd J., CA (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 6.2-L V8)

"Torque converter replaced in an effort to correct rough shifting. It helped but not much."

Anonymous, TX (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 6.2-L V8)

"Torque converter malfunction causing replacement of torque converter."

Anonymous, CA (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 6.2-L V8)

"Shifted rough and inappropriately. Took four trips to the dealer before torque converter was replaced. Truck still shifts rough at times but much, much better than before."

Jack R., TX (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 6.2-L V8)

"Transmission slipping/clunking due to defective torque convertor, became significant at 23,000 miles after 4 years of ownership. Repair was covered under power train warranty. Appeared to be a known issue based on date of manufacture (early 6.2 w/8 speed transmission), would have been nice if GM reached out to owners rather than wait for failures. One more year and I wouldn't have had warranty protection for repair of a low mileage vehicle."

Brian L., CT (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 6.2-L V8)

"skip between gears, mainly the lower gears would have a long pause before engaging. when the gear finally did engage there would be a loud noice, followed by a jerking motion forward.......very frustrating,,,, GM service rebuilt the torque converter but problem still exists.....last time i carried it in with the same issue the service department recommendation was to, quote ...drive it till it gets worse. IN WRITTING!!!!! really!!! also, i noticed on the work order the milage out was the SAME as the mileage in,,,,when i questioned the service manager about it he stated that it was standard, whatever that meant....when i pursued he response to the follow-up manager he said it would be corrected, but other visits to the service department proved fruitless.....just sayin,,,......(the last part of this was just a stress release!!!! sorry!!!)"

Fred B., GA (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)
Transmission rebuild or replacement

"Transmission went out twice second time had to be replaced"

Bob N., AL (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)

"Transmission warranty 100,000. Transmission needed work after 101,231 miles. The problem occurred one week after dealership performed 100,000 mile transmission checkup and transmission fluid replacement. Cost about 1200 dollars"

Anonymous, GA (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"The back up camera image gradually became fuzzier over time to the point that it was, for all intents and purposes, unusable. No amount of cleaning helped. After owning the vehicle for about 5 years I bought an OEM replacement camera for about $120. I immediately noticed that they lens design had been changed from the original. The new camera has a wider field of view and restored the clarity of the original camera when it was new. My hope is that the new design will not result in the same problem as the original."

Anonymous, MN (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"Ipod will work only sometimes with the audio system when plugged into a usb port"

Stewart M., MI (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)

"Any time my wife connected her iPad to the vehicle, it took over the sound system and started playing music from the iPad. If you switched back to the radio, it would eventually switch back to the iPad music."

Anonymous, SC (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 5.3-L V8)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"Could not connect to get directions"

James D., IN (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)

Anonymous, TX (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 5.3-L V8)

"Navigation and radio messed up only after 6 months old. Both would change on its own. Scroll through stations. GPS said I was in the middle of the ocean and also at one point in a lake, not even in this country. Voice control is a joke. Never seems to get it right"

Anonymous, LA (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)

"Broke at Branson, Mo. Reads off, At home in Loveland, Co reads Indian Reservation Badlands in SD. GMC dealer could not fix it and are ordering new GPS, On Star, Radio, etc. and are going to put it in when it gets in. I think it is under warranty. Other then that love the truck! Best one ever had!"

"Problem with the Shark Fin antenna and programing"

David H., CO (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)
Radio

"My information , stereo screen had a few issues mainly the best information system I could by went bad as the reverse on the stereo for music froze up. Whole stereo system has to be replaced"

Michael M., TX (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)

"The radio had blips less than a second apart on several FM stations. The blips were sometimes stronger than other times. It is possible the radio did not properly handle HD radio signals. (The same stations sounded better when I streamed them using my mobile phone and a usb connection.) The dealer could not initially fix the problem. After several months of having the problem, I mentioned it to my local car repair garage. They found the solution which the dealer was able to fix under warranty. The radio sound is now acceptable, although still not as good as in the Ford Edge."

Barry W., MI (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)
Voice control commands

"Voice control is a joke. I give up almost always trying to get it to understand common commands"

Anonymous, LA (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)

"Voice commands can be finicky and sometimes just weird results, i.e. I'd say, call Sophia, it responds with Call Costco, is that right?"

Denis B., TX (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)

Anonymous, VT (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 4.3-L V6)
Headlights

"The factory headlights were substandard, especially for rural driving. This is a common problem on 2014 and 2015 GMC Sierras built prior to January 2015 and has been remedied by a GM service bulletin that provides upgraded headlights under warranty"

Anonymous, FL (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 5.3-L V8)

"The factory headlights were horribly ineffective at night. The dealership attempted to fix several times with no success. Had to install an aftermarket HID headlight kit to fix the issue"

Donnie P., IL (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 5.3-L V8)

"It should be very easy to change the headlight bulbs. On the passenger side, it is definitely not. You have to completely remove the air filter housing."

Anonymous, VT (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 4.3-L V6)

Regular brake failure

Anonymous, GA (2015 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)

"Loss of power brakes when using brakes frequently with engine at low idle. Like when in line at a drive thru. A bit scary when you are used to only light push to activate brakes. Problem was due to a weak vacuum pump. Covered by GM recall. Vacuum pump was replaced by dealer at no cost to me. Only downside was I had to wait a few months for part to be available. GM had a safety recall for this problem about 9 months ago that only involved a software update. They did this but it made no difference. Being as I worked almost 50 years as a heavy equipment mechanic, I understood the problem perfectly and knew this was a smoke and mirrors fix. Eventually GM got more truthful and owned up to the problem and released the program to replace the vacuum pump. It is good now. Happy with my dealer but not impressed by how long GM tried to avoid doing the fix that almost any good mechanic would know what is really required."
