The Sierra, and its twin the Chevrolet Silverado, has been a good choice for years, and the redesigned 2014 model is an even better performer. With its overhaul, this new model has landed some solid punches in the ongoing pickup wars. Handling is more carlike than in most others. The cabin is as quiet as a luxury car's.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"Very good acceleration and undetectable switching from V8 to V4, and back to V8. Aides in fuel economy."

Rewoldt B., TX (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Very good acceleration"

Gary M., AB (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Acceleration great. Lane departure feature great."

Anonymous, WY (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"The transmission and navigation system in this truck operates very poorly. The transmission lunches and the voice recognition and navigation are a joke."

Mark D., TX (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Our truck accelerates when we need it to. The handling is pretty good, though sometimes there is an odd sensation in the steering that makes it feels as if the road surface is controlling the steering. This happens erratically and was very disconcerting at first. I've pretty much gotten used to it but still feel it's rather odd and shouldn't occur."

Anonymous, NC (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"5.3 is perfect engine for acceleration and all other aspects"

Robert H., ON (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Very powerful motor with great acceleration."

Michael J., FL (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Very "touchy" acceleration. Needs to be desensitized."

Anonymous, MD (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"truck has very good acceleration even while pulling my boat. I thought it would shift down a lot trailering but was surprised it does not. Handling is very responsive."

Anonymous, MN (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Sometimes the transmission makes a thump when changing gears"

Anonymous, AL (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Very good power/acceleration with or without towing trailers up to 9000 lbs. Handles well on gravel, highway or city driving."

Anonymous, MB (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Great handling and acceleration"

Anonymous, WI (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"The 6.2 V8 has more than enough power"

Tim C., TN (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Drives very well, good tracking, acceleration is excellent, it handles well, good braking, outstanding gas mileage"

Anonymous, WY (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"This truck looks nice going down the road. I look good in it. It has power when I need it yet is smooth riding. I love my truck."

Anonymous, TX (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"very comfortable"

Anonymous, WA (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"excellent handling very good acceleration"

Anonymous, ON (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"plenty of power. drives like a car"

Anonymous, WY (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"The truck is very quiet, smooth excelleration coupled with the very smooth shifting 8 speed transmission. Makes pulling our travel trailer a breeze."

Jeff W., ND (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Acceleration is a mixed bag. If accelerating normally the response is fine but when passing or trying to accelerate quicker than normal there is lag or no drop down to a lower gear with the transmission."

Howard S., KS (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Acceleration is fine as long as the transmission is working well. The 8 speed transmission is the only thing I don't like. GM will not admit there is an issue but it most certainly is. It lunges and clunks on upshift and downshift randomnly and is very annoying. Dealer will reprogram and it is good for 3 or 4 days and starts right back acting terrible."

Anonymous, TN (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"The 6.2L engine was a large factor for being this truck, while the magnetic ride control and the ride it provides was also a main reason, both together make for great performance, and a comfortable ride."

Norm G., SK (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Smooth Ride"

Anonymous, PA (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Acceleration is not smooth from a dead start. It seems to jerk a little during take off. It also clunks when down shifting at times."

Anonymous, OH (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"I often pull a trailer and the truck does a great job-decent acceleration and steady handling."

Robert B., ME (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"This all-terrain is 365 hp with a 8 speed this is very pleasing"

Anonymous, IL (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Takes really good punch to accelerate enough to pass another vehicle."

Anonymous, FL (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"At the lowest speeds (0-18) there is a lag or hesitation in the transmission. Almost as though it needs to shift or needs help getting going to a point it revs and starts to drive well. We knew it when we bought it but we loved everything else about the truck, so we deal with it."

Anonymous, MD (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Electronic suspension originally developed for the corvette works great in this truck it handles like a sports Car!"

Matt D., CA (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"The Sierra is fast off the line with decent gas mileage and the handling is confident and secure."

Nathan D., FL (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"It handles so well. It has enough power and all through the winter it did perfect without any extra weight in the bed."

Scott D., OH (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"has 6.2 engine outperforms 5.3 truck with about sane fuel mileage, only downside premium gas, worth it"

William W., TX (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"This motor has lots of zip and seems fairly good on fuel"

Anonymous, AB (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Good power for a big truck, handles great"

Larry W., AL (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"has the 6.2 engine good performance and uses about the same amount of fuel in town and a little less fuel on the highway than the 2014 GMC I traded in with the 5.3"

William W., TX (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Got some serious juice. Feels like a luxury car with the attitude of a beefy truck. Best of both worlds."

David B., MA (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"I'm genually impressed with the mpg I'm getting with this V8."

Anonymous, FL (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Large roomy cabin. Easy to get in and out of."

Anonymous, MS (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Excellent ride in the perforated leather heated/cooled seats. Also the multiple seat adjustments make the ride comfort very desirable and the ability to have 2 different driver settings saved."

Anonymous, PA (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Very comfortable seats I like the air cooled seats they perform very well"

Dan S., CO (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"More padding in the front seats would substantially improve comfort especially on long trips."

Clayton B., VA (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Comfy seats for everyone"

Anonymous, OR (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Great ride"

Anonymous, WA (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"worse seats ever, like sitting on apiece of granite"

Anonymous, MA (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"It's ability to conform to my body with the steering column, gas petal function to adjust to my short legs, mirrors are easily adjusted. I like the way “memory’ will automatically reset to the different drivers."

Anonymous, GA (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Ride/Handling and quiet ride are outstanding for a pick-up truck."

"Seats comfortable. Love the climate control."

Anonymous, WY (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Very quite inside."

Michael J., FL (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Excellent seats, VERY NOISY TRUCK"

Anonymous, QC (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"There is more air noise than I think our previous 2011 truck had (comparable model). The seats are comfortable, except for the headrest which pushes my head forward at an uncomfortable angle (I am short, 5'1"). My husband doesn't notice a problem with the headrest. The truck rides well, though it rides and handles better with a load in the bed."

Anonymous, NC (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Power Driver Seat. Seat position memory based on ignition key."

Rewoldt B., TX (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Everything about the COMFORT of our 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali is GREAT--EXCEPT the ride provided by the magnetic suspension when driving on concrete highways. In these conditions, the ride is VERY rough--even on straight, level, and new road surfaces; like a violent "magic fingers" massage. It is jarring and unpleasant, and I am shocked that GMC has no way to adjust or remedy this condition."

Arthur P., NY (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"smooth ride like a car"

Anonymous, WY (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"The seats are not as comfortable as the 2007 gmc I had"

Anonymous, CA (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Basically good but I don't like the seat moving forward when I want to adjust the back up higher. It's also not as easy getting in and out of the rear seat since GMC made the change to doors that swing towards the front. The old swing to the back doors were much better all around."

William F., MI (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"excellent ride and very low outside noise"

Anonymous, ON (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Seats could be better, the electric drivers seat lacks enough adjustments for people with long legs"

Anonymous, OH (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"noise factor is very quiet"

Robert H., ON (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Extremely smooth ride for a 4WD truck."

"Very quiet ride and the air conditioned seats are sooo nice!"

Matt D., CA (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"comfortable heated seats, even on long trips. Lots of adjustments to make you comfortable"

Michael P., NY (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"The noise level and comfort of the seating inside the cab is outstanding and best I have had in a truck"

Anonymous, NC (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"quit smooth"

Bob B., GA (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Very quiet and is very comfortable plus rides very well for a truck"

Anonymous, AB (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Ride is better than my last GMC, has computer controlled shocks, seats are a bit smaller and fit my wife better, the cab of the pick up is much quieter than my last pick up. An excellent riding vehicle."

Anonymous, WY (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Quietest most comfortable truck I have ever been it. I get compliments on the ride all the time when I Uber people"

Jeremy T., TN (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Same"

Anonymous, NC (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Night and day from our last GMC Sierra 1500 (2014). Now THIS is a truck. Feels so comfy, yet it's got all the juice you'll ever need. Perfect truck. I'd put it against any competitor."

David B., MA (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"Got a great lease deal on the truck, got a lot of premium features for a relatively small lease price"

Anonymous, MI (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"The accessories are comparable to similar priced vehicles."

Anonymous, MS (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Although my Sierra is a 1500 series, it handles rough roads and off road driving with a lot or comfort but good performance."

Anonymous, TX (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Considering the Denali trim level, I’m disappointed that when compared to the competition, this vehicle lacks the options offered and available in the others top models."

Norm G., SK (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Seems over priced"

Anonymous, TX (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"I have both auto savings through COSTCO and GMC Suppliers invoice pricing .This particular vehicle was leased in a special December 2017 January 2018 savings deal through COSTCO that gave us the GMC suppliers invoice savings as well as a $700 COSTCO savings card."

Anonymous, PA (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"poor seats and a totally useless satellite radio system. Neither of which showed up quick enough on the short test drive"

Anonymous, MA (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Solid pickup with a great ride and quality interior"

John H., MA (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"For the price this truck should have more options such as adaptive cruise control"

Anonymous, WI (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"wait for the big discounts at the end of year"

Michael P., NY (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"I love all the electronic features, the ride is very quiet and the truck has the power to pull my 23’ boat just fine"

Anonymous, CA (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Purchased after the 2018's were out. Was able to buy a fully loaded 4WD SLT for $42K, A little of $13K discount."

Gerald M., LA (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"4 wheel drive: 5.3 liter engine for power; treated rotors for long life vs old style rotors on previous GMC Sierras and Chevy Silverado's that rusted thru from the inside out very quickly. (again very quickly - probably from Mexico or China metal). Forgot, also Chevy Tahoe's: Good design on brake calipers two bolts hold it on vs my daughter's 2007 Lexus that has a bolt and a pin that holds the rear rotor and that pin freezes up over time and that make you buy a new caliper. Bad design on Lexus in my opinion. I do my own brake repairs. : Full size vehicle: Heavy duty parts: easy to get into and out of vehicle vs my daughters 2007 Lexus or her brand new accord - way too low: step up bumper to get into bed of pickup: Nice outside style of body(my opinion): I feel safer with a full frame vehicle and sit higher vs a non frame car and sit very low to ground. Knowing that those cars might have more air bags etc.: I have a two door GMC(regular cab) I like looks of two door pick up truck and I like that its its shorter than an extended cab for driving, parking, and more room in my garage and again the looks of the truck."

Arthur C., PA (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Everything about this truck I love. The styling both inside and out gets looks. The drive both acceleration and handling are more like a car than a truck. I have the SLT with premium package."

Joe M., MI (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"GMC placed a back up camera on the touch screen but it failed to install backup sensors. The sensors are more important than the camera. Also the rear lighting in reverse is so bright, it makes the camera nearly useless. Overall, the price of trucks has gone out of sight. It's hard to get anything at a decent price and with the features you like on a lot."

William F., MI (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"I like the truck but trucks in general seem overpriced."

Robert B., ME (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Though I have only had the Sierra a short time, I am very pleased with the truck and the price I paid for it."

Chris E., ON (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Very frustrating to find that the vehicle is missing many of the safety features that are available on the Yukon Denali. Smart cruise is not available but has the ability to adjust the distance for emergency breaking, no blind spot monitoring, 360 camera. Way behind ford and Yukon!!"

Randy C., WI (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"Cadillac truck with a GMC name on it."

Anonymous, ON (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"This pick up is a great value for the price. The ride is great, gas mileage is excellent, has nice features like bed lighting, a step in the bumper, wheel chocks with the jack, slow lowering tail gate, tail gate locks, great all around vehicle for the price."

Anonymous, WY (2017 GMC Sierra 1500)

"should be push button start"
