The Sierra, and its twin the Chevrolet Silverado, has been a good choice for years, and the redesigned 2014 model is an even better performer. With its overhaul, this new model has landed some solid punches in the ongoing pickup wars. Handling is more carlike than in most others. The cabin is as quiet as a luxury car's.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Rough shifting

"Rough shift from 1st to 2nd, then rough from 2nd to 1st"

James B., TX (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)

"Both my 2016 and 2017 Sierra had rough shifting transmissions"

Mark D., TX (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 6.2-L V8)

"Erratic shifting and surging"

Randall W., WA (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)

"Rough/delayed shift from standstill to 1st and downshift in lower gears"

Anonymous, IL (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)

"The transmission does not function properly especially when it's cold and in the lowest gears. And it's intermittent."

Anonymous, AK (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)

"Rough shifting between 1-2 gears, especially when engine/transmission is cold, in parking lots or stop and go traffic. Transmission seems confused as to what gear it should be in and sometimes I experience a hard thunk or knock which feels like I've just been rear-ended."

Paul M., LA (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)

"shifts hard from first to second gear and second to first gear."

Anonymous, NE (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 6.2-L V8)

"Very rough shifting from 1st to 2nd shift. Have taken it back to the dealer several times but problem keeps coming back. the only thing they have done so far is to change the transmission fluid but that has not solved the problem. I have talked to several other owners of this year model and most of them have had the same problem. GM knows there is a big problem with this 8 speed transmission but have not done a recall."

William S., AR (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)

"When down shifting to the 1st gear, it would jolt into it enough so you could physically feel the downshift. This problem was addressed to the GMC dealer, Cavender GMC/Buick, the shop forman did a ride along with me. He did admit that this particular model year had issues in the transmission shifting smoothness. If this was an occasional issue, I could deal with it, but this happens all the time. I just wish I had looked at other vehicles. Michael J Wells"

Anonymous, TX (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 5.3-L V8)

"Dealer claims rough shifting transmission was caused by a transmission fluid formulated for northern climates (I'm in the south), and recommended a fluid change/upgrade to synthetic at nearly $800. It did improve the transmission but it seems like a design fault being fixed by a band-aid."

Anonymous, TX (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)

"It's been a problem since it was bought. When you start to drive it will hesitate and then jump ahead. It seems to do it at lower speeds. It has been brought up with the dealership numerous times and they say nothing is wrong."

Anonymous, AB (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 6.2-L V8)

"Hard shifts from 1st to 2nd. Hard clunk when shifting to reverse, about 1 in 5 times. Did not experience shuttering or slipping but was asked that question by dealership. Problem resolved in Oct. 2019 but replacing tranny fluid with a newly designed fluid with less moisture in it. Zero cost done under warranty because there was a service bulletin on the fluid and the GM 8 speed transmissions."

Anonymous, (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 6.2-L V8)

"Rough shifting/bump in transmission operation from day 1 after 5 trips to GMC dealer still doing the same thing. Very unhappy with product, they say 'it will adjust to the driver's habits'. Really?"

Anonymous, FL (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)

"its the first year of the 8speed transmission. GMC has issued new software updates for the engine management and transmission control computer. The issue became slowly better by my training the computer (the dealer gave me a sheet of how to do this) and its own learn as it updates every 4k miles according to the dealer. Its a terrible transmission for such an expensive car and I will trade this vehicle in for a 2019 version with the 10speed assuming it is better, if not, I'll go with a different brand."

Stephen M., VA (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)

"Clunks when first accelerating when followed by decelerating, ie taking foot off accelerator."

Anonymous, GA (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)

"worrisome clunking sound when shifting in lower gears ( parking lot and stop and go traffic situations ). Unexpected surges as vehicle downshifts when slowing down for traffic lights or turns"

Anonymous, FL (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 6.2-L V8)
Slipping transmission

"delayed engagement from standstill to 1st and between 2nd and 3rd"

Anonymous, IL (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)

"The slipping transmission was noticed and was brought to the attention of the dealership at my first oil change. I as told it was normal on these new models. Th truck K is back in the shop second time. Updating computer did not remedy the issue. Unsure of next step. On day 9 of being in loaner."

Chrissy D., TX (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 6.2-L V8)

"The transmission shuttered and slipped in 2018 and the dealer changed the fluid and that corrected the problem for one year and about 10,000 miles and the problem returned in 2019 and the dealer changed fluid again and it corrected the problem. They extended the warranty for this problem for 20,000 more miles. This is my second and last GM pickup with the 8 speed transmission because they both had the same problem!"

Anonymous, MS (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)

"Bumping, rough shifting 5 trips to repair under warranty they say 'transmission will get used to driver habits'. Very expensive top of the line vehicle, we are extremely disappointed in GMC and their dealership in Bartow Florida."

Anonymous, FL (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)

"when you are driving in a low speed the truck will jerk as if it is having a problem shifting gears. It has been taken to the dealership several times and they claim it is normal and that there is nothing wrong with it."

Anonymous, AB (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 6.2-L V8)
Transmission computer

"Computer switch in computer put the truck in low gear while commuting it had to be serviced at the dealer"

Anonymous, CA (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)
Transmission sensor or solenoid

"Vehicle got stuck in 4WD-HI during low temperature. A transfer case sensor had to be reprogrammed. TSB was issued for this problem"

Anonymous, ON (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)

"There was a GM recall because the automatic transmission fluid had water contamination. This began to cause a drive line vibration caused by the torque converter not knowing which gear to shift to while driving at a constant speed between about 50 - 65 mph. The GM dealer replaced the transmission fluid and there have been no further problems."

Anonymous, NC (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 6.2-L V8)

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"water leak from roof antenna"

Anonymous, ON (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)

"Both front windows over a period of a few months had both side windows fail and fall to the bottom of the tracks"

Sheldon S., ON (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)

"The anent The antenna on the trcuk cab. It started quickly and got the dash and the carpet wet. It ws repair but I had to pay a fee because the truck was two months out or warranty. What really upset me was that there was a soft recall for this problem in 2018 but GMC did not notify us. My local mechanic looked iot up for us and told us to take it back to the dealer. GMC is making money by not reporting all defects to consumers and paying for the fix whether or not the problem is present."

Tim C., TN (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)

"There is a wind noise in front passenger side door. Been to shot four times still not pinpointed or fixed."

Anonymous, (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)

"It is road noise that appears to be coming from the rear and it is a characteristic of this GM model vehicle due to (I am told by GM techs.) lighter materials being used in the rear of the cabin and nothing can be done to fix it; i.e. all the fixes have been applied to this vehicle."

What Owners Say

Display screen freezes up

"the display screen on my gmc began flashing on and off, then my sirris radio channels began to change without my requesting, the navigation screen would change to different destinations while I had it set to a specific destination. gmc had to replace the entire unit. that did correct tthe problem."

Anonymous, FL (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 5.3-L V8)

"Every now and then, the display screen freezes."

Anonymous, TX (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)
Display screen goes blank

"Display screen goes wonky and requires replacement of a computer. Car is still operable but cannot get information about the car, use radio, phone link, GPS, etc. It was covered under the 3 year warranty, but in the future it will be very expensive to replace."

Anonymous, TX (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"The GPS system couldn't find my location"

Anonymous, FL (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)

"The entire in dash electronics suite (GPS, Blue Tooth, SM Radio, etc) computer module malfunctioned. There were no replacement parts available from GMC."

Anonymous, TX (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)
Radio

"About once every 2 months the radio makes a very loud screeching noise, and then stops working until I turn t off and let t sit fro a minute or so--then it comes back on and works fine for a few weeks. The delivering dealer told me that it needs a "software fix" for no charge, but I had to leave it for half a day--which I have not been able to arrange"

Anonymous, MA (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 SL 4.3-L V6)
Software update fixes

"I have had to take this truck back to the dealer ( 100 miles each way ) 6 times to have safety recalls done. It took 3 trips to get the injectors replaced where upon they told it was a common problem. I have made 13 trips to this dealer during my 6 years of ownership of a 2014 sierra and this 2017 sierra. This is unacceptable. I have always been a GMC owner ( 45 years )but I am going to try something else next time."

Anonymous, ME (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Unsure 5.3-L V8)

Drive System

Driveshaft or axle, CV joint, differential, transfer case, 4WD/AWD components, driveline vibration, traction control, electronic stability control (ESC), electrical failure.

What Owners Say

Differential

"GM had an issue with the rear axle and they repaired it under warranty"

Anonymous, (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)
Driveline vibration

"It seems the torque converter was vibrating, similar to driving on a rough road. It was worked on twice, with changing fluid resulting in a fix."

Jan N., AR (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)

"This issue is tied to the hard shifting and gear selection issues. It started soon after I purchased the vehicle and got progressively worse. I spoke with the dealership about it when the vehicle was new and was told it wasn't a problem, just a characteristic of the transmission. As time went on they continued to put me off and refuse to do anything about it until the warranty expired. Then it was a problem. I paid over $700.00 for the initial "fix" only to find out that didn't fix the problem. Then I had to pay another $1,400.00 for another "fix". It's somewhat better, but certainly not repaired. GMC knows there is a problem with this transmission, several people have had exactly the same problem, but they won't issue a recall or repair it. I expect much better from a $60,000 pick-up truck."

Anonymous, GA (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)

"A Vibration that feels like a tire out of balance and harsh shifting and irregular up and down shifting have been issues from the first month of ownership. The vibration can cause discomfort on long drives and is more pronounced when trailer towing or when in 4cylinder mode. Trailer towing mode causes the engine to hang in 4 cylinder mode at times and at moments loose momentum on flat land, dash board read down hill braking activated at times on flat ground in traffic with no cargo. When under light load to maintain speed or light acceleration a metallic ringing noise occurs before shifting in or out of overdrive. It has hard down or up shifts for no apparent reason in slow rolling traffic conditions. All behaviors start to occur as the transmission approaches operating temperature as they had before the previous repairs. Gas mileage is great sometimes and occasionally declines for short intervals. The overall average has only declined a tenth or so. The overall average is within a tenth of a mile per gallon as the 2001 CHEVROLET Silverado I had previously. The dealership has replaced the torque converter under warranty and shared the cost of the internal shift module. Both repairs did solve the problems for just over 20,000 miles (it now has 96,000). The torque converter was replaced at about 30,000miles and the shift module was replaced at about 73,000 which fixed the vibration that felt a bit like an out of balance tire from the first 100miles only from the center of the truck. The shift module replacement was performed after new tires at 73,000 did not fix the problem. The noises and shifting that were previously associated with the torque converter are back."

Anonymous, TX (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 5.3-L V8)

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

Clock

"About 3 months after delivery on this new vehicle, the radio/clock unit would stop working and rest any prior settings. I spoke to the service director at the dealership & was told they knew about it but I'd have to make an appointment to have it resolved. Furthermore I would have to leave it for at least 3 hours--thus since it has only happened 6-7 times in the 24 months I have owned the truck, I have lived with it"

Anonymous, MA (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 SL 4.3-L V6)
Exterior lights (other than headlights)

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Engine computer

"computer reported high pressure fuel pump side problem which put engine in safe mode and required truck to be towed to dealer, repair was a new version of software, versus an actual fuel pump problem"

Anonymous, TX (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)
Oil leaks

"The oil leak was caused by bad crimping / degraded oil lines connected to the oil cooler. The oil lines needed to be replaced. The oil line could have disconnected from cooler if issue was left unattended for a longer period of time."

Anonymous, AB (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Regular brake failure

"The vacuum pump that feeds the brake booster from the date of manufacture was problematic. It made the breaking power unpredictable at times. The original pump was found to be defective and was replaced with a redesigned model. It worked great for at least 5000 miles and then it began to have the same problems with regards to predictability of breaking power. It was replaced several thousand miles after the decline had began. The second replacement is a bit unpredictable. However, the truck now has the best braking power it has had during hard braking that it has ever had. It still has original brake pads and rotors. GM did cover the cost 100%."

Anonymous, TX (2017 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 5.3-L V8)

AIR BAGS, SEAT BELTS
Jul 10, 2017
A failure of the front air bags or seat belt pretensioners to deploy in the event of a crash necessitating deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver and front passenger.
Summary:
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Buick Lacrosse and Chevrolet Spark EV, Caprice PPV and SS vehicles, 2014-2017 Buick Encore and Chevrolet Corvette, Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles, 2015-2016 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Tahoe, Trax, Suburban and Silverado 2500 and 3500 and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles, and 2015-2017 GMC Sierra HD 2500 and 3500 vehicles. While being previously remedied for recall 16V-651, the affected vehicles may not have received the complete software update necessary to remedy the recall condition. Without the update, certain driving conditions may cause the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software to activate a diagnostic test. During this test, deployment of the frontal air bags and the seat belt pretensioners would not occur in the event of a crash.
What should you do:
GM will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the SDM software. Vehicles that have had a previous air bag deployment will have the SDM replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on August 4, 2017. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782.
