Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Satisfaction Owner Satisfaction To learn about satisfaction, CR has collected survey data from our annual survey on more than half a million vehicles. Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2005 GMC Sierra 2500HD owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Calipers

"Wear"

Charles G., MA (2005 GMC Sierra 2500HD SLT 6.0-L V8)

"right rear wheel was smoking almost on fire, was so hot. waiting for repairs on 4-20-15 , calipers and rubber brake line are faulty, also caused rotor to warp and wheel seal to fail"

Jake S., OH (2005 GMC Sierra 2500HD SLE 6.6-L V8 diesel)
Normal routine brake wear

"95000 miles on the original factory brakes. I knew it was time for new brakes. The brakes never failed."

Anonymous, (2005 GMC Sierra 2500HD SLT 6.0-L V8)

"at 162000 this was the first time that this vehicle required a brake job."

Anonymous, AB (2005 GMC Sierra 2500HD SLE 6.6-L V8 diesel)
Parking brake

"repaired due age and salt used on roads"

Anonymous, NH (2005 GMC Sierra 2500HD SLT 8.1-L V8)

"was hanging up would not dis engage"

Jake S., OH (2005 GMC Sierra 2500HD SLE 6.6-L V8 diesel)

"Parking brake cable rusted through and broke off."

Anonymous, AB (2005 GMC Sierra 2500HD SLE 6.6-L V8 diesel)
Premature brake wear

"brake rotors wear out and rust very quickly 38000 miles and I have had to replace both"

Anonymous, CT (2005 GMC Sierra 2500HD SLE 6.0-L V8)

"There was a major issue with brake lines rusting out, nearly causing a catastrophic collision. The GMC brake lines are made of inferior materials and rust through very quickly. This causes immediate loss of brakes. Two lines failed simultaneously las"

Teresa P., ME (2005 GMC Sierra 2500HD SLE 6.6-L V8 diesel)

"Brakes starting de laminating at 40000 km finally had to replace the entire system including the hydraulic pump for the brakes"

K R., BC (2005 GMC Sierra 2500HD SLT 6.6-L V8 diesel)
Regular brake failure

"the brake lines corroded and burst, leaving me without brakes for the second time in two years"

Anonymous, VT (2005 GMC Sierra 2500HD Base 6.0-L V8)

"Every brake on the underside of the truck line failed from rust at one time or another. It finally got to the point, that we had them all repaired. Then to top it off, 3 of the banjo fittings rusted away causing brake failure on two more occasions. We were fortunate that we were not in heavy traffic at the time of brake failure each time. We have had the brakes fail at least five times due to rusted brake lines. Our 2003 Honda accord, has yet to have one line fail and it has been driven twice as many miles. Why? because the Accord lines are coated. Lastly, this truck is a 2005 model year. I must have entered the wrong date."

Teresa P., ME (2005 GMC Sierra 2500HD SLE 6.6-L V8 diesel)
Rotors

"The rotors were to worn to be reused."

Anonymous, (2005 GMC Sierra 2500HD SLT 6.0-L V8)

Alva E., UT (2005 GMC Sierra 2500HD SLT 6.0-L V8)

"Heater/ac actuator motor fails to respond to open cold or hot door on command.Blows hot on driver side, cold on passenger. Common problem for this model"

I replaced the 4 under dash actuator motors and the in dash climate controller. The A/C started working on the passenger side, but was luke warm on drivers side.
