GMC Terrain

While this version of the GMC Terrain is not a bad vehicle, the competition had left it in the dust. While nice and roomy inside, the Terrain is less efficient than other five-passenger SUVs, but burns as much gas as larger, seven-passenger models. The 3.6-liter engine, shared with many other General Motors products, supplies quick acceleration times at the test track, but feels sluggish in routine driving.

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for over 300,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2021 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Anonymous, IA (2010 GMC Terrain SLT 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"I had the timing chain and other parts replaced. Some months I had to have the Pistons, rods, spark plugs and quite a bit of related items replaced. All under warranty. The dealer said this was quite common on 4 cylinder models"

Katherine R., KY (2010 GMC Terrain SLT 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Engine used oil for unexplained reason so GM opted to replace it"

Anonymous, SC (2010 GMC Terrain SLT 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The rings were defective in the original engine. It was already burning oil when we bought it with 106000 miles. GM sent us a recall about it but wouldn't cover any of the cost since it was over 120000 miles at that point. The engine burned more and more oil, burning out the catalytic converter which was a thousand dollars to replace alone. After deteriorating to burning over a quart of oil a week, the engine died four miles from home and we barely made it back home, then two miles to the mechanic. Replacing the engine and catalytic converter cost almost $6000."

Christopher S., WI (2010 GMC Terrain SLT 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Oil consumption problem was taken care of under warrenty"

Anonymous, FL (2010 GMC Terrain SLT 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Started using oil and GM finally authorized an engine rebuild, rings, bearings etc"

Anonymous, MN (2010 GMC Terrain SLE 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Recall on my car that I was told I didn't need. Timing Chain failed and introduced metal shavings into the engine. Luckily an extended warranty replaced the engine. Still lost use of vehicle for 3 weeks"

Henry F., NY (2010 GMC Terrain SLE 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"continues to give warning light - GM has recall by will not fix "until gets real loud" Did extend warranty-Also oil - when starts burning a lot - bring it in - Also warning not to drive too long straight on interstate as steering will fail - Real G.M"

Anonymous, KY (2010 GMC Terrain SLE 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

Lee B., WI (2010 GMC Terrain SLE 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

I was furious"
