2015 GMC Yukon XL Reliability - Consumer Reports
A huge, old-fashioned, truck-based SUV, the Yukon XL is the quintessential family truckster for large families who live beyond the suburbs. What sets it apart from other SUVs is that it provides three rows of seats -- for carrying up to seven, eight, or even nine people -- yet retains generous cargo space, along with a hefty towing capacity.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2015 GMC Yukon XL owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"AC compressor seized at ~38K miles. Vehicle has always been dealer-serviced. GM refused my request for reimbursement. GM customer service was extremely hard to deal with. Dealership was extremely helpful & discounted repair costs."

D O., AZ (2015 GMC Yukon XL SLT 5.3-L V8)

"compressor failed"

Anonymous, TX (2015 GMC Yukon XL Denali 6.2-L V8)

"Failed twice"

Anonymous, NC (2015 GMC Yukon XL Denali 6.2-L V8)

"ac failed at 7 months, 10k. dealer thought leak, did leak test, then supposedly compressor bad. replaced and works fine now. dealer gave loaner vehicle. annoying but i still love this truck"

Alisa M., FL (2015 GMC Yukon XL SLT 5.3-L V8)

"The compressor blew up and sent particles throughout the whole system."

Anonymous, (2015 GMC Yukon XL SLE 5.3-L V8)

"A c went out complete were multiple recalls but due to recalls mileage stipulation I had to pay out of pocket"

Anonymous, (2015 GMC Yukon XL SLE 6.2-L V8)

"No cold air"

Anonymous, CA (2015 GMC Yukon XL SLT 6.2-L V8)
Automatic climate control

"The rear climate controls would not work. Whatever the drivers temperature controls were set at is what the rear controls operated at"

Danny M., PA (2015 GMC Yukon XL SLT 5.3-L V8)
Blower (fan) motor

"Blows motor failed due to fuse box failure. This failure was so common that replacements were unavailable."

Anonymous, MD (2015 GMC Yukon XL SLT 6.2-L V8)

"Rear air conditioner controller failed due to melted fuse. Fuse box not available but told able to drive vehicle. Failure of rear air controller fan/fuse caused engine blower to sense engine overheat and shut off air conditioner and run at excessive speed. Vehicle not safe to drive."

Mary H., MD (2015 GMC Yukon XL SLT 6.2-L V8)

"Went out with recall and again mileage was too 45 miles high so had to Pay out if pocket"

Anonymous, (2015 GMC Yukon XL SLE 6.2-L V8)
Condenser

"Air cond. went out last fall. Dealership said they found leak and fixed it. This spring went to use it and it didnt work again. Took it baqck to dealer and they said it was rear condenser was out and now vehicle is out of warranty it will cost $900.00. Dealer got GM to pay $600.00 of bill. Got vehicle back and air still did not work. now it is back at dealer to get front condenser replaced but GM does not have parts. have been without vehicle now for 3 weeks. They have no idea when they"

Anonymous, IN (2015 GMC Yukon XL Denali 6.2-L V8)

"Liquid leak. Replaced under warranty"

Roland S., CA (2015 GMC Yukon XL SLT 5.3-L V8)

"A/C does not work and have waited 2 months due to no parts"

Mary H., MD (2015 GMC Yukon XL SLT 6.2-L V8)

"GM issued a Service Bulletin about condensers in the Yukon/Suburban and 1500 Sierra/Silverado trucks. Both the condenser itself and hard line coming out of the compressor are prone to cracking and leaking. My condenser visibly cracked at the base and started leaking. Due to COVID-19, the supply of replacement parts was severely limited and my dealer projected at least a 2 month wait for replacement parts. (an online search returned practically the same result.) However, due to my physical handicaps and my inability to endure heat, my dealer was able to convince another dealer to sell them one and I got it replaced within a week. My dealership is beyond exceptional in both sales and service."

Anonymous, (2015 GMC Yukon XL SLT 5.3-L V8)

"at 61000 miles, the a/c condenser failed and although just out of warranty, GM would not cover this very expensive repair."

Anonymous, (2015 GMC Yukon XL Denali 6.2-L V8)
Evaporator

"No cold air"

Anonymous, CA (2015 GMC Yukon XL SLT 6.2-L V8)
Heated or cooled seat controls

"Heater on passenger side had shorted causing a battery to die"

Kenneth G., FL (2015 GMC Yukon XL Denali 6.2-L V8)
Refrigerant leaks

"Broken line due to clamp issue and recall but still had to pay out of pocket for repair."

Anonymous, (2015 GMC Yukon XL SLT 5.3-L V8)

"There was a factory defect on the weld that GM didn't admit to but ultimately offered a secret warranty."

Ted P., CA (2015 GMC Yukon XL SLT 5.3-L V8)

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"display does not keep current with the player"

Alan S., TX (2015 GMC Yukon XL Denali 6.2-L V8)

"blue tooth connection routinely fails and must be reset"

Anonymous, TX (2015 GMC Yukon XL Denali 6.2-L V8)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"Speech recognition is non existent. navigation even with updates can't find roads that have been in existence for a long time. Doesn't seem locally aware. As in navigate to a city in Mo, but looks to California or some other distant state."

Anonymous, (2015 GMC Yukon XL SLT 5.3-L V8)

"The GPS system in this vehicle began acting up at roughly 75,000 miles, it would work intermittently. In the past year it completely stopped working. Dealership told me that it was the GPA antenna that needed to be replaced due to it having a loose connection at a cost of over $500. This was a manufacturing defect, but they wouldn't replace it under warranty even though I found a recall notice on the internet. There reason and when I called GMC I was told I had to bring it in when the vehicle was under 18 months old, if not it wouldn't be covered. I have owned 8 GM Denali / Suburban's this will be my last due to all the issues with this very expensive vehicle, and virtually not concern or coverage by GMC. Other issues I have had, replaced transmission at 76,000 miles, two electric door looks stopped working in past 2 years. Sun roof doesn't work due to something wrong with fuse plate in vehicle, but they won't replace it under warranty even though it came from the factory that way, radiator is leaking due to poor radiator quality, now air suspension system is acting up. Basically this vehicle is a pile of junk, but as I paid so much for it I am keeping it as to buy a new Ford Expedition or a MERCEDES-BENZ GL is a lot at this time. Next one will not be a GMC or Chev and they don't seem to care and as I said I have owned 8 of them. Very Very unhappy customer."

David S., KY (2015 GMC Yukon XL Denali 6.2-L V8)

"The satellite antenna that serves the satellite radio, GPS, and OnStar was defective upon initial purchase. As soon as the vehicle was rained on for the first time, water intruded into the antenna and it failed"

Mark N., TX (2015 GMC Yukon XL Denali 6.2-L V8)

"The gps antenna developed a leak and fried the antenna and the on-star module"

Danny M., PA (2015 GMC Yukon XL SLT 5.3-L V8)

"GPS antenna has been replaced twice to date. When the antenna fails it renders the GPS useless. Also, the improved replacement parts were on back order, which meant the vehicle did not have a functioning GPS system for 1/3 to 1/2 the time we've own"

David E., TX (2015 GMC Yukon XL Denali 6.2-L V8)

"GPS system does not work properly. When an address is entered the system sometimes comes back with " address cannot be found." But when entered at another time it has no problem finding it"

John L., VA (2015 GMC Yukon XL SLT 5.3-L V8)

"gps aerial was faulty and replaced under warrenty"

Anonymous, ON (2015 GMC Yukon XL SLT 5.3-L V8)

"did not work on delivery"

Anonymous, AR (2015 GMC Yukon XL Denali 6.2-L V8)

"When I first bought the Yukon it only showed my location in the state that it had come from. One state away from my location. I took it back to the dealership. Now the navigation realizes where it is at but navigates sometimes 4 hours out of it’s way to get to a final destination. I use my Garmin that makes reasonable navigation decisions."

Anonymous, KS (2015 GMC Yukon XL Denali 6.2-L V8)

"Hard to explain. As we are driving, instead of staying on the marked road it it jumping to the right several miles at a time so pretty soon it is telling us we are somewhere 100 or more miles to the east"

Anonymous, SD (2015 GMC Yukon XL SLT 6.2-L V8)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Although the dealer stated it had capability to download and speak text messages, it didn't. When I finally got to someone who was actually knowledgeable, they said some did, some didn't, and they ones that didn't would not be retrofitted"

Anonymous, TN (2015 GMC Yukon XL SLT 5.3-L V8)

"People at other end of phone calls using bluetooth handsfree have a hard time hearing me. Intermittent problem. GMC says it is not their problem to keep the car's firmware updated."

Kevin H., AZ (2015 GMC Yukon XL SLT 5.3-L V8)
Radio

"XM Radio fades in and out while traveling down the road. GM says that it results from foliage blocking the signal. Previous cars with XM radio did not fade while driving on the same roads"

John L., VA (2015 GMC Yukon XL SLT 5.3-L V8)

"There is no off switch for the radio, only a mute. Also, the listing of channels is very confusing"

Anonymous, TX (2015 GMC Yukon XL Denali 6.2-L V8)

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

Exterior lights (other than headlights)

"Both left and right break lights stop working at different times. They both were repaired under the warenty."

Anonymous, NV (2015 GMC Yukon XL SLT 5.3-L V8)

"Right side tail, Brake and turn signal went out on a trip. Turns out this is a common problem. Dealer wanted $685 plus labor. Bought aftermarket light and fixed for $450. Would rather have spent a dollar to replace bulb."

Anonymous, PA (2015 GMC Yukon XL SLT 5.3-L V8)

"Led brake light failed"

Anonymous, WA (2015 GMC Yukon XL Denali 6.2-L V8)

"Tail light. Very expensive."

Anonymous, WY (2015 GMC Yukon XL Denali 6.2-L V8)

"Both tail/brake lights failed after a period of intermittent issues. When I asked the dealer to fix brake light bulb I was informed it was a sealed LED assembly costing $595 and none in stock! About the time both lights totally failed I received a recall notice from GM on tail lights. If my vehicle had less than 72,000 miles they would replace @ no charge, if more than 72,000 I would have to pay. My selling dealer quoted $200 for each tail light assembly and $198 to install. Cost: Between $600-$700 inc tax. At the time both tail lights failed and recall notice was received I was at my Florida condo. So I went to local GMC dealership in Ft Walton (because I had NO tail light or brake light and someone almost ran into me) to see what they would charge. That dealership quoted me $700 each and $250 to change! I will NEVER darked that dealership door again. I am not happy with GM charging me for a safety recall because my mileage was arbitrarily above some limit...it was a safety issue! I am especially unhappy because this is my 12th GMC Suburban/Yukon XL! I've generally been happy with these vehicles but this experience is causing me to consider a different brand for replacement this summer. My dealership charged me their cost on the lights and I'm happy with my local dealership. The Ft Walton dealership attempt to gouge me in a safety recall is unconscionable and I intend to write a letter to GM Customer Service, not that it will do any good."

Anonymous, LA (2015 GMC Yukon XL SLE 5.3-L V8)

"the rear brake lights went out"

Anonymous, NC (2015 GMC Yukon XL SLE 5.3-L V8)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Rough shifting

"Sometimes when I start the vehicle it lunges forward. About once every two weeks when I slow down at an intersection and then accelerate the SUV lunges forward and feels like someone has hit me from the rear"

Anonymous, NM (2015 GMC Yukon XL Denali 6.2-L V8)

"When driving and you apply the brakes to a complete stop and then accelelarate it shifts very hard. You feel a hard knock in the rear. When rolling to a stop at 1000 rpms it will always accelerates to 1200 rpms when you have your foot off of the accelerator. When it is cold it also pauses when starting from a complete stop. It has been to four dealerships, GMC, two Chevrolet and the mechanics at the used auto delership that it came from to try and repair it. No one has been able to fix these problems. It is the most unresponsive vehicle I have ever owned."

Anonymous, KS (2015 GMC Yukon XL Denali 6.2-L V8)

"At times the transmission does not downshift a slow speeds correctly. When coming to a stop (not always) you feel a large jolt when the vehicle finally shifts. The first time it happened I thought I was rear ended."

Anonymous, CA (2015 GMC Yukon XL Denali 6.2-L V8)

"As previously mentioned, the dealer fixed the issue with the shuddering from transmission, but it seems like it is starting to have the same problem. Will have to schedule another service call."

Anonymous, MN (2015 GMC Yukon XL Denali 6.2-L V8)
Slipping transmission

"Common problem with 2015 GMC/CHEVROLET transmissions. Something about a filter and fluid that caused it. They replaced both and I haven't had the issue since."

Patrick O., MN (2015 GMC Yukon XL Denali 6.2-L V8)
Transmission computer

"Transmission was stuck in 4 wheel drive. Computer was reprogrammed by dealer"

Anonymous, MN (2015 GMC Yukon XL Denali 6.2-L V8)

"After driving my GMC, my mechanic who owns a GMC has suggested that I take it to another dealer that will address the issue of the new computer transmission and the vibration in the drive train .. I welcome you to test this vehicle for the magazine"

Robert J., NE (2015 GMC Yukon XL Denali 6.2-L V8)

"Transmission had a shuddering issue at certain speeds in certain gears. This appears to be a somewhat common problem (based on forums). I brought it to the dealership to fix, and they apparently had to reprogram the transmission and also replace the fluid and filter. They attempted to charge me for all of this (even though it was under warranty), but I pushed back and they ended up filing it as a warranty claim with GM. The vehicle was fine for 8-10 months, but it seems like it's starting to do it again."

Anonymous, MN (2015 GMC Yukon XL Denali 6.2-L V8)

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Alignment

Matthew T., CA (2015 GMC Yukon XL SLT 5.3-L V8)
Electronic or air suspension

"The MagRide system went out before 50K miles."

Anonymous, OH (2015 GMC Yukon XL Denali 6.2-L V8)

"I have just started to have issue with the air suspension on my 2015 GMC Denali, I have owned numerous other Denali's and only had one with an issue at over 200,000 miles. This issue just started in the past couple of days, and I need to take it into the dealer. The issue is that it doesn't seem to level the vehicle and then as you are driving the back jumps up into place unexpectedly. I know if it is a problem with the pump or the shocks this is going to cost me well over $2,000 to fix. Very poor quality of parts. I know that some may say I have excess miles on my vehicle but over 90 percent of my miles are highway driving smooth roads etc. and I don't carry excessive weight. This system is faulty and prone to issues, especially the air pump that levels the truck, as the pump is placed in a unsealed box behind the drives back wheel. I headed up product development in a very large consumer durable company and we would have fired the engineer who recommended this unless it is planned so that when the system is inundated with snow, salt and ice in the winter it will eventually break down and have to be replaced for a lot of dealer $$$$."

David S., KY (2015 GMC Yukon XL Denali 6.2-L V8)

"The radial tuned suspension went out and made it uncomfortable to ride in"

Anonymous, LA (2015 GMC Yukon XL Denali 6.2-L V8)
Shocks or struts

"I noticed a vibration in the front end. The dealer determined it was a strut. I had coverage in a policy I took out."

Anonymous, MO (2015 GMC Yukon XL Denali 6.2-L V8)

Anonymous, TN (2015 GMC Yukon XL SLT 5.3-L V8)

"Software problem. Vehicle was undrivable, but easily fixed with a software update"

Anonymous, MN (2015 GMC Yukon XL SLT 5.3-L V8)
Driveline vibration

"vehicle has vibration at 45-50 mph. Dealership has been unable to fix or even figure out problem from the first day of receiving vehicle. All tires have been replaced at my cost, two others under warranty. This was not the problem. It is now thought it may be transmission shifting to soon. But they can not figure it out. It has been turned over to Gm corporate but no one knows what to do to fix it. This is my 5th new Yukon Denali XL. Never had trouble before but this one has been horrib"

Anonymous, IN (2015 GMC Yukon XL Denali 6.2-L V8)

"This is the roughest running vehicle I have ever owned .. please come take it and test it for yourself. there are problems in the drive train and overall suspension of the vehicle . My 1992 LS400 was a magic carpet ride compared to this"

Robert J., NE (2015 GMC Yukon XL Denali 6.2-L V8)
Electrical failure

"Rear air conditioner controller fuse melted rather than blowing causing fuse box failure. No fuse boxes are available and repair shop says that there are none available. Just like the condenser last year, GMC has quality control problems."

Mary H., MD (2015 GMC Yukon XL SLT 6.2-L V8)

Fuel System

Check engine light, sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor), emission control devices (includes EGR), engine computer, engine computer, fuel cap, fuel gauge/sender, fuel injection system, fuel pump, fuel leaks, stalling or hesitation.

Anonymous, FL (2015 GMC Yukon XL Denali 6.2-L V8)
Transmission rebuild or replacement

"The 8 speed transmission was defective, causing rough shifting and a "clunk" sound when decelerating. The only available fix was a complete transmission replacement. This didn't happen until we had taken it to the dealer about five times, initially being told nothing was wrong and that we were "too sensitive" and "imagining things.""

Jul 10, 2017
A failure of the front air bags or seat belt pretensioners to deploy in the event of a crash necessitating deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver and front passenger.
Summary:
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Buick Lacrosse and Chevrolet Spark EV, Caprice PPV and SS vehicles, 2014-2017 Buick Encore and Chevrolet Corvette, Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles, 2015-2016 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Tahoe, Trax, Suburban and Silverado 2500 and 3500 and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles, and 2015-2017 GMC Sierra HD 2500 and 3500 vehicles. While being previously remedied for recall 16V-651, the affected vehicles may not have received the complete software update necessary to remedy the recall condition. Without the update, certain driving conditions may cause the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software to activate a diagnostic test. During this test, deployment of the frontal air bags and the seat belt pretensioners would not occur in the event of a crash.
What should you do:
GM will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the SDM software. Vehicles that have had a previous air bag deployment will have the SDM replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on August 4, 2017. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 17287.
