The Honda Civic is refined and economical, with fairly nimble handling and a relatively comfortable ride. The aerodynamic styling of the Civic looks futuristic, but sacrifices ease of access. Pronounced road noise remains a complaint. Stability control is standard only on the EX-L, Hybrid, and Si models.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Owner Satisfaction with:

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"It is not a "hot" car. But it is reasonably responsive and holds the road well."

FRANCIS D., FL (2010 Honda Civic)

"Starting with the seats, everything seems oriented toward a rewarding driving experience. The steering wheel gives wonderful feed back, while providing a confidence-inspiring control of the vehicle. While the brakes really retard the ol' forward progress, the brake pedal and the accelerator are position very well for heel-toe braking. The clutch pedal works well, with good take up and smooth release. However, there are times when, even with the clutch fully depressed, there is some minor snic"

Anonymous, MS (2010 Honda Civic)

"Handling in a curve is excellent"

Anonymous, VA (2010 Honda Civic)

"Acceleration acceptable, doesn't fly off the line but it can easily keep up with traffic. Very Good manueverability. Steering is tight and likes road grabbing tires. Stability in normal handling could be better. Anti lock brakes work well. This car can do 75 MPh all day long and still get 30-35 mpg"

WILLIAM B., VA (2010 Honda Civic)

"The automatic shifting is slow to respond. On hills--including low grade but long ones--I have to gun the gas pedal to get up to speed with the 45-70 mph traffic."

BEVERLY R., AL (2010 Honda Civic)

"many repairs for front end noises and rattling, strut bearings replaced on left and right side, bump stops replaced, accessory belt tensioner replaced, groaning noise still present, transmission was stuttering torque converter was replaced. Vehicle has always had a harsh ride especially over bumps"

Anonymous, NJ (2010 Honda Civic)

"Ride is a bit too bumpy."

DOUGLAS S., CA (2010 Honda Civic)

"Doesn't handle as well as the 2003 couple. The 2010 is a sedan"

Anonymous, NY (2010 Honda Civic)

"acceleration is lacking"

GREGORY B., IL (2010 Honda Civic)

"Excellent handling......downright enjoyable to take tight turns in this car. Acceleration could be a bit better as the car seems to easily lose speeds on upgrades, etc."

JAMES S., CT (2010 Honda Civic)

"too much road noise and steering wander"

JUDY C., AZ (2010 Honda Civic)

"Very good gas mileage. Engine matched perfectly with transmission. Excellent acceleration."

DOMINICK R., GA (2010 Honda Civic)

"The CVT transmission is annoying because it forces me to alter my driving pattern. I frequently cannot accelerate at the rate I deem appropriate for conditions."

MARK A., CT (2010 Honda Civic)

"Excellent for our 600 mile trips to KY."

Anonymous, MD (2010 Honda Civic)

"tight steering"

Anonymous, AR (2010 Honda Civic)

"Slow acceleration."

E D., MN (2010 Honda Civic)

"Every little bump comes right through to my spine! Pitiful. Acceleration is very good, although its quite sensitive to foot pressure. Handling around corners is a little 'non-intuitive', as it seems to not track as good as it should. When I first bought it, I complained to the dealer that it was difficult to control in a curve (had to spend a great deal of energy adjusting the tracking via the steering wheel to go around turns) - sadly, they said "nothing wrong with this car." I disagree."

MICHAEL G., MA (2010 Honda Civic)

"vehicle lacks power at low RPM, I maintain my vehicle very well. Unable to understand why"

ALAIN L., NS (2010 Honda Civic)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"passenger front seat doesn't adjust, hard for tall person to sit without banging head."

BRADEN B., FL (2010 Honda Civic)

"The only downside of this car is the noise level."

Anonymous, NC (2010 Honda Civic)

"Lots of small rattling noises from dash and rear deck area. They come and go and are difficult to locate. I find this extremely annoying."

DOMINICK R., GA (2010 Honda Civic)

"seats aren't very comfortable and the ride is noisy via wind and road noise"

Anonymous, CA (2010 Honda Civic)

"The road noise from the tires is too high."

EDWIN B., OR (2010 Honda Civic)

"Good sight lines, comfortable seats, good air conditioning and heating, relatively quiet"

Anonymous, DC (2010 Honda Civic)

"Very uncomfortable, the placement of the parking brake handle (next to gear selector in center console) is awful and painful. No tilt ability for the front seats is uncomfortable."

KEN C., MD (2010 Honda Civic)

"The front seats are extremely uncomfortable, forcing the head forward, straining the neck."

RONALD M., TX (2010 Honda Civic)

"The seats are not that comfortable on road trips."

Anonymous, CO (2010 Honda Civic)

"Too much road noise"

Anonymous, PA (2010 Honda Civic)

"very comfortable for a small car, for a 2-door coupe"

Anonymous, CA (2010 Honda Civic)

"the ride is harsh. stiff suspension = good handling but can feel every bump in the road."

JOHN M., CA (2010 Honda Civic)

"I really like all features of the car, with one exception--it is a bit noisy on some road surfaces. Other than that, it's a pleasure to drive."

Anonymous, CA (2010 Honda Civic)

"Seats are hard and do not hold you in place. A/C does not keep car cool. Lots of road noise."

Anonymous, IL (2010 Honda Civic)

"hand brake intrudes on drivers leg room"

JUDY C., AZ (2010 Honda Civic)

"I had a 98 Civic 4 door that had a pretty good ride. I got the 2010 2 door pretty much on my satisfaction with the 98, and other Honda products I had bought. The 2010 2 door has an awful ride as far as bumps & noise. I suppose it has a stiffer suspension for handling, but I'm not very pleased with it."

GARY B., MO (2010 Honda Civic)

"Seats are not comfortable, and there is a lot of road noise"

GREGORY B., IL (2010 Honda Civic)

"Seats uncomfortable; engine and outside wind noise level high"

Anonymous, IL (2010 Honda Civic)

"Rides stiff, noisy, no climate control, seats to low to ground"

Anonymous, WI (2010 Honda Civic)

"Lots of road noise."

E D., MN (2010 Honda Civic)

"Extremely uncomfortable seats"

KIRK S., NH (2010 Honda Civic)

"I'm having issues this year with the air conditioning. It didn't work at all for awhile after it got hot this summer and then it would seem to kick in suddenly. It works *most* of the time now, sometimes better than others."

VIRGINIA P., NC (2010 Honda Civic)

"seats"

RICHARD B., CA (2010 Honda Civic)

"No lumbar adjustment. Loud road noise."

Anonymous, PA (2010 Honda Civic)

"On long drives I feel serious discomfort in my buttocks. The car is way too low to the ground and scrapes bottom on entering or exiting many driveways. The cabin is too noisy for me. The engine, however, is much quieter than cars in the same price range."

MARK A., CT (2010 Honda Civic)

"The ride is a little noisy. I think it could be the tires-but there are a couple of rattles."

NANCY W., OH (2010 Honda Civic)

"High level of road noise. Very comfortable seating. very"

Anonymous, NC (2010 Honda Civic)

"This year, and others, were known for a very noisy ride. Honda could have alleviated this for very little money. Seats are not particularly comfortable."

Anonymous, FL (2010 Honda Civic)

"It is noisy and the ride is a little rough"

JULIE W., KS (2010 Honda Civic)

"Honda had made significant gains in noise level in cabin but it's got a long way to go. The road noise is so loud when traveling highway and/or bumpy roads we find ourselves raising our voices to be heard in car. That's unacceptable and a big issue for a new Honda purchase."

Anonymous, CA (2010 Honda Civic)

"Air conditioning went out. Dealer replaced the heat exchanger for $700. Still did not work and then said something else was wrong which would have cost another $700. I told dealer that I would not pay for the heat exchanger single since it was not bad. Dealer would not agree so I had him put in the old unit and refund my money. Never did get the air conditioner fixed."

Anonymous, OH (2010 Honda Civic)

"Car sits too low and the doors never stay open when you try to get in or out"

LAWRENCE B., TX (2010 Honda Civic)

"The seats are comfortable for short trips but for long trips (10 hours) they start feeling hard around 5 or 6 hours in. Also, like many smaller cars, this one is noisier than I had hoped."

BEVERLY R., AL (2010 Honda Civic)

"The road noise in the cabin is more than I would like it to be."

Anonymous, OR (2010 Honda Civic)

"Very good car, but very low to ground, requires extra effort to get into and out, back seat entry and exit significantly worse, cabin, like most small cars is not particularly quiet, I did install 3rd party backup camera as rear visibility is not great, disappointed that there is a recall on the front passenger airbag mechanism and parts are at least two months out."

GARY M., CA (2010 Honda Civic)

"The Civic is comfortable, but seems to have lots of road noise."

Anonymous, SC (2010 Honda Civic)

"Seats are "thin" and stiff, climate control was fine until this year when A/C stopped working (as of yet undiagnosed), road noise is bothersome - body is thin and noise comes through, the ride is stiff and choppy. I really don't like the ride of this car."

MICHAEL G., MA (2010 Honda Civic)

"bought it for my wife. After driving it for awhile it hurt her back and she gave it up. Also the mileage is not what it was advertised to be"

MARK Y., CT (2010 Honda Civic)

"A little too noisy at highway speeds. Could use more lumbar support."

ANDREW S., MA (2010 Honda Civic)

"Back seat is a total waste of space. Unusable, unreachable."

BRUCE T., TX (2010 Honda Civic)

"The ride is noisy and rough."

Anonymous, WA (2010 Honda Civic)

"Seats are comfortable, however, I had to add padding on either side of my legs to provide support (I am 6'2"). This is primarily due to the fact that the seat adjustment is manual. IF it was power adjustable, I do not believe I would need the additional padding."

JAMES S., CT (2010 Honda Civic)

"Seat comfort wore out. We are older and finding the car is too low and difficult to enter and exit."

Anonymous, ON (2010 Honda Civic)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"Great little car at a great price. Inexpensive to operate and other than preventive maintenance, has given us NO trouble at all in the 6 years we've owned it."

CYNTHIA H., CA (2010 Honda Civic)

"Love the way it handles and the decent gas mileage it gets."

ROBERT K., WI (2010 Honda Civic)

"OTHER THAN AIRBAG RECALL, THIS LITTLE CAR HAS BEEN A VERY RELIABLE LITTLE CAR."

DANIEL S., TX (2010 Honda Civic)

"We wanted a first car for our son that he could drive and run with minimal expense and it has proven to do that very well."

PALOMA H., TX (2010 Honda Civic)

"Good purchase price, good gas mileage, no repairs, inexpensive to maintain"

Anonymous, DC (2010 Honda Civic)

"Good on gas, no extra maintenance for the past 5.5 years, reliable."

NETTIE S., NB (2010 Honda Civic)

"I purchased it for $15,500 and didn't expect luxury. Since I drive only about 3,000 miles/year, it rides well enough for the short distances. But, I do worry about it on long drives because the brakes wore out in the 3rd year and the acceleration hesitates sometimes."

NAOMI G., GA (2010 Honda Civic)

"Great car with no major issues."

Anonymous, MA (2010 Honda Civic)

"The car is 6 yrs. old and we have not had any expenses other than regular servicing. Our model is a basic DX . We feel we got what we paid for, no more no less."

Anonymous, NS (2010 Honda Civic)

"Great value. The only thing that has made me think of alternatives is the horrendous road noise."

JEFF S., TX (2010 Honda Civic)

"Good"

Anonymous, FL (2010 Honda Civic)

"My past experiences with the Honda Civic have proven they retain their value much better than most cars."

Styling

How it looks inside and out

DANIEL S., TX (2010 Honda Civic)

"Aerodynamic shape; efficient use of space, large trunk, easy exit and entrance, seems to always be in style"

WILLIAM B., VA (2010 Honda Civic)

"love the way it looks. the back end, without any spoiler added, looks great. reminds me of a 1990s porsche with the rounded tail"

Anonymous, CA (2010 Honda Civic)

"The coupe is a vey attractive vehicle and sporty looking car."

FRANCIS D., FL (2010 Honda Civic)

"very efficient use of space"

BRIAN S., CA (2010 Honda Civic)

"The driver's visor has gotten loose."

Anonymous, IL (2010 Honda Civic)

"Good"

Anonymous, FL (2010 Honda Civic)

"It's supposed to be able to fit 5 but I tried and 3 adults in the back seat were cramped at the shoulders."

NAOMI G., GA (2010 Honda Civic)

"For a 6 year old car it still has a good look to it."

Anonymous, CO (2010 Honda Civic)

"It is the horrible paint job. It looks awful and it is only six years old."

DEB L., VA (2010 Honda Civic)

"It sits too low to the ground. It scratches the parking/wheel stops when pulling into a parking space (scratches the paint off). Also the 2 tiered dashboard makes it hard to clean the front window on the inside."

CHERI M., CA (2010 Honda Civic)
