Although the previous Pilot was previously considered a Top Pick in this category, we were disappointed with this model. It lost ground on interior fit and finish, as well as braking. Road noise remains omnipresent and the center console is crowded. That said, the Pilot is a very functional vehicle. Fuel economy is improved by one mpg overall, it still seats eight, and it drives pretty well.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Owner Satisfaction with:

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"Great acceleration good handling. Invest in good tires. Add tow package (brakes) if possible. Upgrade speakers if possible."

MICHAEL R., OH (2009 Honda Pilot)

"This vehicle turns on a dime, as they used to say. It's remarkable for something this size. I used to drive Ford Explorers and immediately noticed a difference with the Pilot while parking, changing lames, etc...."

Anonymous, OH (2009 Honda Pilot)

"Very comfortable ride and handling. I have all wheel drive and it handles great in Florida rainstorms. Wish mpg higher but worth the extra safety"

PENNIE J., FL (2009 Honda Pilot)

"Overall very satisfied with Pilot. Great utility and good ride. Gas mileage poor in city, but good on highway. Acceleration at highway speeds poor, and not responsive. While we are gentle drivers, we have gone through 4 sets of brakes in 80,000 miles, replacing with only Honda OEM parts."

Anonymous, MD (2009 Honda Pilot)

"Has 8 seats, great storage room"

JON B., CA (2009 Honda Pilot)

"It drives well but the concern about the spark plug issue makes me worry regularly"

Anonymous, FL (2009 Honda Pilot)

"Super comfortable car. Handles very well"

LAURA S., MI (2009 Honda Pilot)

"It rides like a car. It responds very well. The only issue I have currently is that I hear squeaks from time to time on the turns. I Need to get that checked out"

Anonymous, NJ (2009 Honda Pilot)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Handles Great, very good towing compared to the autos in that market. A little noisy and speakers could be better."

MICHAEL R., OH (2009 Honda Pilot)

"My husband is tall and has a bad back so the Pilot is perfect for him to get in and drive. My big dogs like it too!"

Anonymous, NJ (2009 Honda Pilot)

"The ride and comfort is very good, except last year the nav system stopped working. It will work for five min then a message pops up to see dealer for repair."

ROBERT G., NJ (2009 Honda Pilot)

"Good vision, comfortable ride, ease of getting in and out."

Anonymous, CO (2009 Honda Pilot)

"This car has a high level of road noise."

RICHARD K., WA (2009 Honda Pilot)

"The air flow of cooling uncomfortable. Should be wider output"

Anonymous, NJ (2009 Honda Pilot)

"The comfort is great. I love how the seat is so adjustable. The road noise is more loud than in other cars I've had."

Anonymous, FL (2009 Honda Pilot)

"I really like the wide bench on the second and third row. I will like to see that Honda keep offering this configuration on all the Pilots, which I do not see on the new 2016 Touring (one of the reason I am not changing my current Pilot). I would like the Pilot not to have that much plastic through the interior, but at least, it does not make as much noise as my Lexus ES300h. I will like to see even a longer base Pilot with more cargo space behind the third row."

Anonymous, CA (2009 Honda Pilot)

"hard to get the temperature comfortable...drafty. Winter months the air has a cold chill even when trying to heat."

Anonymous, WA (2009 Honda Pilot)

"Shocks are a little rough."

DAVID K., CO (2009 Honda Pilot)

"Very noisy at highway speed from road noise transmitted thru the whole suspension system. No road noise isolation."

Anonymous, NC (2009 Honda Pilot)

"Road noise"

JIM L., MO (2009 Honda Pilot)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"Don't buy this car, too many recalls. You cannot reach anyone AHC American Honda to help you."

VERA B., GA (2009 Honda Pilot)

"It held it's value to 50% residual after 5 years"

Anonymous, NY (2009 Honda Pilot)

"It has lots of room and surprisingly gets good gas mileage."

JOHN I., AZ (2009 Honda Pilot)

"Fair price for an AWD SUV that I needed for the family. Except for the recent airbag recall notice I received, the car has been extremely reliable and without any problems for over 100K miles."

ROBERT Q., CA (2009 Honda Pilot)

"Excellent family vehicle with lots of room, a relatively good ride, and great reliability."

TODD W., MN (2009 Honda Pilot)

"I was able to get a good deal back in 2009 for my current Pilot, something that seems not likely with the new ones. So far, it has been very reliable to me and have not needed to spent money on repairs. Good value on the long run."

Anonymous, CA (2009 Honda Pilot)

Styling

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"Some of the leather upholstery has become delaminated through ordinary wear and tear. This eventually results in an unsightly tear."

Anonymous, RI (2009 Honda Pilot)

"Pilot needs a spot on the console to set something down, like a food item or phone. The current design has a cover that slides over the cup holder that can be used to set something down, but then you cannot use the cup holders at the same time."

Anonymous, WA (2009 Honda Pilot)

"front corner bumpers are so far beyond what the driver can see that they are easily scraped on objects that the driver thought the vehicle would clear."

Anonymous, WA (2009 Honda Pilot)

"We elected to add "wood trim" when the vehicle was first purchased. There was no indication that it would not be real wood and just a plastic wood looking veneer that is glued/taped on top of the existing trim. This was extremely disappointing and we felt misleading by Honda as nowhere in the literature did it give specifics details about what we were paying for.. We definitely will not pick that option ever again if we ever purchase another Honda!!"

KINGSLEY R., TN (2009 Honda Pilot)
